Bachelor Programme

Institute of Science and Environment

Duration Language Campus
4 Years Full-Time (Day)  English/Chinese/Portuguese NAPE Campus

This programme prepares you for a successful career in environment-related areas. As a professional, you will have the opportunity to contribute solutions to the environmental challenges facing the world.

The Bachelor of Environmental Science responds to the growing worldwide demand for well-trained professionals in environmental science brought about by environmental degradation and increasing pressures on natural resources. This demand is especially evident in China and the Greater Bay Area which surrounds Macao. Students receive a broad formation in environmental science while also engaging with other scientific disciplines.

The programme includes foundation modules on different fields of science (biology, earth sciences, chemistry, physics, and mathematics), environment-related modules (pollution, energy, waste management, environmental politics, and environmental impact assessment), and modules that promote cross-talk with other disciplines such as ethics, management, architecture, and urban planning. There is a high proportion of hands-on learning hours so students can develop adequate technical training in tools, methods, and techniques useful for Environmental Science. Students completing this programme will also have the opportunity to continue their studies in this area at USJ with a Master of Environmental Sciences and Management.

The programme coordinator is Thomas Lei.

Testimonials

“I feel the BES programme is definitely preparing me for work in academia, and the biggest contributing factors are definitely the professors. The professors here at the faculty are great, especially Dr. Ivan Arraut and Dr. André Antunes, who is the current Dean of the faculty of Environmental Science. These two professors are demanding but they push you to be and do better and they definitely cemented my interest in working in Academia. Studying under them has been a great privilege because I got to know them, their work ethic and experiences. They set a great example for students regardless of if they choose to pursue Academia or other professional fields. I definitely learned a lot from them and I owe a great deal of my current success with my studies to them. They helped me shape my vision on what it takes to be great, and I hope to be a great academic like them someday. I can’t wait to see how they shape the University and elevate the science departments here at the university.”

Pedro Lopes, Current Year 2 Student

“To state about my personal growth, I always feel lucky that I have chosen the Institute of Environmental Science (ISE) at USJ, Macau. In fact, ISE gives me a great opportunity to get closer with scientific research which I will devote myself to in future by enhancing the essence of skills, scientific literacy and the mindset required for a researcher. ISE supports and offers various laboratory equipment required to study and explore. Moreover, we have wonderful professors who are always passionate to teach us incomprehensible theories that look easier. Sometimes, ISE hosts meetings, seminars, and parties which encourage me and upgrade my knowledge through speakers and seniors. Furthermore, I am enjoying the events of visiting the nature that I have learnt about the ecosystem and serve her with trash clean-up and tree planting. Along the way of beginning to ongoing program, my confusion, unclearness and curiosity has dramatically shifted to a longing of protecting the environment which has supported me to tackle with the challenge of learning.’ Nothing comes easy’, one of my professors told me.

I believe that even if the skills I have learnt may not be and to my research job in the future, maintaining a mindset of research and learning will ensure that nature will teach me her mystery!”
