This course is suitable for students who have no basic knowledge of Chinese.The course uses systematic pronunciation, vocabulary and conversational situational training, step by step, to help students initially master Mandarin listening, speaking, reading, writing, mandarin translation and pinyin skills, to initially establish a foundation for the study of Mandarin. At the same time, with the systematic pronunciation method training, students are guided to understand Putonghua and its characteristics, and initially cultivate the ability to judge the pronunciation and correct use of Putonghua.
This course is suitable for students who have some basic knowledge of Chinese. The course is intended to rise the level of proficiency of students with a basic level of mandarin. Students are expected to understand basic phrases about common topics, communicate simple and routine tasks and be more familiar with the pinyin phonetic system In order to better understand the pronounciation of Chinese words.
This module is the entry level of the university English language curriculum and is designed so the learners can interact in a simple way, ask and answer simple questions about themselves, where they live, people they know, and things they have, initiate and respond to simple statements in areas of immediate need or on very familiar topics, rather than relying purely on a very finite rehearsed, lexically-organised repertoire of situation-specific phrases. Media is a vital part of modern society, and therefore writing for the media comes in great importance.
In this module students will learn the tools to write for different media channels, whether to convey information or express themselves creatively. The module explores the principles of clear and compelling writing tailored to different audiences and purposes. Students will gain practical experience in writing for traditional and digital media, including news articles, press releases, social media posts, and multimedia scripts. Emphasis will be placed on ethical considerations, accuracy, and the impact of media messages. The first part of the module focuses on writing informative articles, covering skills such as identifying story ideas, researching topics, conducting interviews, and writing/editing content. The second part centers on creative writing, fostering the development of technical writing skills and the creative process, encouraging students to find their unique voice and style.
This module introduces students to digital photography, its history, and different approaches to storytelling through photography. Students will learn to operate a digital camera and lighting equipment, mastering exposure, focal length, white balance, color, depth of field, focus, formats, and compression, as well as the rules of composition and framing. Through diverse exercises in the studio and outdoors, students will explore various photography genres, including portrait, landscape, product, fashion, artistic, and photojournalism. They will expand their knowledge of different photographic techniques, as well as, increase their visual culture and interpretation of images.
Additionally, students will learn techniques to correct and enhance light, color, and texture, and creatively composite images. The module also addresses the ethics of image manipulation, particularly in photojournalism and documentary photography.
This module offers an in-depth exploration of visuality and its significance in contemporary society, with a special focus on digital imagery, social media, and promotional pictures. Images shape our understanding and interpretation of the world around us, influencing both individual and collective behavior. The module offers theoretical and empirical approaches to the study of visual culture, exploring how visuals impact perception and cognition. By focusing on cultural aspects that rely on imagery and visual representations, it provides a comprehensive array of frameworks to studying graphic components that inform people’s lived experiences and equips students with skills to read, contextualize, and interpret visual artifacts as expressions of cultural and social representation, providing a comprehensive understanding of visual culture in the digital age. The module emphasizes gaining visual literacy and the ability to “read” images in context, preparing students to critically analyze the global visual landscape.
This module explores the art and science of animation and immerses students in this exciting world of animation of scenery, characters and graphics/typography. Students will learn the fundamental principles of animation, including timing, movement, and storytelling, while also gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard software and tools. This course covers a variety of animation styles, such as 2D, 3D, stop-motion, and motion graphics, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the medium and equipping them with the necessary skills to create captivating and dynamic animated visuals. Students will explore the fundamental principles of design, color theory, typography, and layout, as well as gain hands-on experience with industry-standard design software. Creative Experiences I is an introductory, intensive workshop designed to immerse students in multidisciplinary creative practices. Working in collaborative teams alongside international media experts, students will explore foundational tools, techniques, and trends in digital media production. This module emphasizes experimentation, creativity, and hands-on learning, offering students their first opportunity to create projects for a public exhibition. By the end of the week, students will have gained essential skills and a portfolio artefact that reflects their creative identity. This module encourages collaboration, innovation, and community engagement, laying the groundwork for future creative exploration.
This module introduces and explores the main concepts of academic and digital literacy. Students will gain an overview of research intent and design, methodology and technique, format and presentation, and data analysis and management. Furthermore, this module will guide the students in writing and reading tasks required in an academic context and help them to plan and write essays in academic language and format. To succeed as a student and in the professional world the module's content will help the students develop skills to create and perform academic and professional presentations. Furthermore, educational and digital literacy operate rapidly into the emergence of new forms of communication and interaction; therefore, they are crucial to be understood and used effectively and efficiently. This module will prepare students with the appropriate ability to find, evaluate, and compose clear information through writing and other media on various digital platforms.
This module takes a practical approach to thinking and reasoning as a liberal arts standard core module for beginning university students. In designing this course, particular attention is given to critical and analytical skills that are more immediately applied or “useful,” i.e., learning competencies that can be readily transferable across disciplines.
Nevertheless, the module focuses on issues of application, decision and judgment, tangible outcomes and results, and transferable strategies through a rigorous examination of the processes of thinking and learning at the undergraduate level. In other words, the module aims to enhance students’ capabilities to see things from different perspectives, emphasizing the role of imagination and creative thinking in articulating ideas. It will develop competencies in critical thinking and working collaboratively with others.

This course is suitable for foreigners who basic knowledge of Chinese mandarin (A1 level). The course aims at students with a basic knowledge to keep developing their level of mandarin Chinese. Students are expected to produce short texts of topics that are familiar to them, communicate with simple sentences in different social contexts, enrich their mandarin Chinese vocabulary knowledge and understand some elements of Chinese culture related to food and manners in a social context.
This course is suitable for students who have some basic knowledge of Chinese (A2.1 level). Students are expected to keep developing their mandarin Chinese level, focusing on producing simple texts about topics like self-introduction or daily routine, be familiar with Chinese characters even if they are not able to remember the sound, expand their vocabulary to topics related to daily life, family and work related tasks and demonstrate knowledge about the main traits of Chinese geography, Chinese traditional festivals and the great variety of Chinese dialects.
This module is intended to reinforce the English language skills of learners in so that they can meet the requirements to progress to B2 under the Common European Framework. It contains a range of topics to enable the learners to express themselves in a range of contexts and enables them to follows the main point of discussion around them and speak in a clearly articulated standard version. This module explores the theoretical foundations and historical development of sound from the early ages until modern digital and AI technologies, as a medium of communication and artistic expression. Students will examine the cultural, social, and technological aspects of sound, from early acoustic principles to contemporary sound design. This module will also focus on sound theory: the physical and a psychoacoustic phenomenon of sound waves; the human hearing system and the effects of long exposure to loud sounds; acoustic concepts such as reflection, absorption, diffusion, and refraction; and other basic concepts of sound engineering. Students will learn the different types of sound related devices and their characteristics and gain a comprehensive understanding of how sound shapes human experience and influences various forms of media. The module emphasizes critical listening skills, the analysis of soundscapes, and the application of sound theory in practical projects.
This module offers students an exploration of the creative and technical aspects of sound design and music composition for film. Students will develop the skills necessary to create immersive and impactful soundscapes that enhance the storytelling experience. Topics covered include sound design, sound effects creation, and the composition of original music for film. Students will learn how to effectively use sound to evoke emotions, create atmosphere, and enhance the narrative of a film. Through a combination of theoretical exploration and hands-on experience, students will learn the technical aspects of sound, audio technology, and acoustics, and how to create a professional and immersive sonic experience. The module covers a range of topics, including location sound recording, boom operation, ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement), sound editing, sound mixing, and sound mastering. Students will gain proficiency in using industry-standard equipment and software to capture clean and high-quality sound on set and in post-production. Practical exercises and real-world projects will enable students to apply their knowledge and skills in recording location sound, performing boom operation, capturing ADR, editing dialogue tracks, mixing sound elements, and mastering the final audio mix. Students will engage with key theoretical frameworks, technical innovations, narrative evolutions, and influential movements and figures that have shaped the film industry. Through critical analysis of films, students will learn to appreciate the artistic, cultural, and technological advancements in cinema as well as their vocabulary and grammar and the inception of the main technical and narrative advancements. The module emphasizes the importance of understanding film as a medium that reflects and influences societal values and norms, covering key milestones such as the Silent Film Era, Soviet Montage Theory, the Golden Age of Hollywood, Italian Neorealism, the French New Wave, the Digital Revolution and the Asian Cinema Global Recognition..
This module introduces and explores video post-production and focuses on the essential skills and techniques required to excel in that field. Students will gain hands-on experience with industry-standard software and equipment, learning the intricacies of video editing for one’s creative expression and communication. This practical module goes beyond traditional video editing techniques and incorporates additional elements such as colour grading and basic visual effects to enhance the overall visual quality and storytelling impact of a film or video project. Through collaborative projects and real-world scenarios, students will develop the technical proficiency and creative vision needed to produce polished and professional video content, including: video editing and montage; colour correction and grading; basic visual effects, rendering and mastering, post-production and delivery systems. The module emphasizes the importance of storytelling and visual aesthetics, preparing students for careers in film, television, and social media.
By the end of the module, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the workflow process involved in video post-production and the importance of rhythm and pace in motion pictures.
This module provides an introduction to essential tools and techniques for the creation, production and shooting of videos and/or films. It covers the principles and practices of both single-camera production and studio broadcast multi-camera production, with a particular focus on the emerging field of live streaming. . Students will work individually and in small production teams and gain hands-on experience in planning and producing 3 different short video/film projects of different types: documentary, promotional and creative. The main goal of this module is to provide students with both applied skills and critical knowledge about filmmaking and visual storytelling.
Creative Experiences II builds on the foundation set in Year 1, challenging students to explore more advanced tools, techniques, and emerging trends in digital media production. Students will work closely with international experts in the media field to design and execute creative projects that push the boundaries of their skills. This year’s workshop will introduce students to intermediate-level technologies, collaborative workflows, and project management strategies. The final exhibition will showcase innovative works that reflect both technical proficiency and creative vision. This module is crucial for expanding students’ portfolios and fostering community engagement.
This module presents the key philosophical concepts as developed in the Aristotelian tradition, including (1) natural being, (2) human being and (3) the source and end of being. Students will first acquire an overview of philosophical anthropology, ethics and ontology. Students will then be exposed to Confucian thought and specifically Thomistic perspectives on virtue and natural law. The study of ethics goes beyond abstract considerations of right and wrong conduct or just and unjust behaviour to encompass inquiry into what constitutes “the good life” or a life worth living. A special focus will be given to the relevance of the Western Canonical tradition on value judgments and moral questions.
This module provides an understanding on the Chinese National Culture, it’s History and Philosophy. Furthermore, the module provides an overview of the key features and evolution of the China's political and legal system. There will be several topics covered in this course, including Chinese political ideology and organizations (the Chinese Communist Party and state institutions), legal and judicial systems and institutions, legislative systems and processes (the People's Congresses and the Political Consultative Conferences), and bureaucratic processes. In addition, the course introduces the concept of the One Country Two System and its operation.

This course is suitable for students who have an upper basic level knowledge of Chinese (A2 level). The module intends to give students the means to understand short texts in traditional media, develop their capacity to extract keywords from a text and reproduce it in their own words, make them able to make comparisons between people and things in topics related to personal life and also help them keep expanding their Chinese mandarin vocabulary.
This course is suitable for foreigners who have some basic elementary knowledge of Chinese (B1.1 level). This course aims to give students the means to give full personal details about themselves and others, express daily habits, perform normal daily tasks with ease, understand and write short texts and be able to identify and summarize information in short texts in media publications.
This is a one-semester Academic English course for advanced English language level users. This course enhances academic language skills through learner’s participation in advanced general and academic faculty discipline-related activities. The use of relevant discipline-related materials can facilitate learners’ development of appropriate grammar and genre text styles, and extend their vocabulary, language skills and understanding of nuance for a variety of academic and general contexts. The course provides learners with the advanced academic English skills that are necessary for studying in English at university level.

This course is suitable for students that have elementary knowledge of Portuguese in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level B1.1. The module will provide students with a level of cultural and linguistic proficiency in all communicative skills, including comprehension, expression and production, oral and written codes, and lexical and grammatical functioning of the language, in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level B1.2. The content of Portuguese VI will focus on developing the understanding of the main point of many radio or TV programmes, texts from newspaper, advertisements on current affairs or topics of personal and professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear and on understanding texts that consist mainly of high frequency every day or job-related language.
This module provides students with concepts and tools of marketing theory and advertising principles, applied in the specific setting of start-up organizations, where flexibility and effectiveness are crucial. Based on an idea for a new product or service, students will explore its underlying market potential, as well as develop marketing concepts, strategies, and techniques to reach the desired target customers and/or audiences, by communicating it through the most effective communication channels. The module also covers advertising methods, including creative strategies, media planning, and campaign preparation and evaluation - students will develop the skills needed to design and implement effective marketing and advertising campaigns, gaining insights into consumer behavior, market research, branding, and digital marketing.
Besides that, this module will also teach students how to develop a strategic plan for social media that brings value to the product and company - post writing and publishing, management and measurement tools (SEO, audit, etc), create an editorial calendar and manage a crisis situation. Students will learn how to manage these tools on platforms such as Instagram, Youtube, Facebook, Google Ads or others.
This practical module focuses on the diverse world of Computer Generated Imagery (CGI), providing students with hands-on experience in creating high-quality digital images and animations. Students will explore various techniques and tools for video content creation, including 3D modeling, texturing, lighting, rendering, animation, and generative art. The module covers the use of industry-standard software, as well as generative artificial intelligence tools and programming for creating digital content. Students will develop the technical skills and creative vision needed to excel in the field of CGI. By the end of the module, students will have a comprehensive understanding of the CGI workflow and the ability to create visually stunning and innovative digital content, using multiple tools.
This module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of producing and executing live shows and entertainment events. It covers both theoretical and practical aspects, focusing on studio environments (broadcast, streaming) and live venues such as auditoriums, theatres, and arenas. Students will learn the key principles of event production and gain hands-on experience in various technical aspects, including live sound, lighting mixing and programming, video streaming, video mixing, and special effects. Through practical exercises and projects, students will develop the skills required to produce professional live shows, from planning and coordination to technical execution. They will learn advanced digital camera techniques and acquire studio multi-camera shooting and live mixing skills as well as learn how to properly plan a show, increasing their autonomy in media project development. By the end of the module, students will have the knowledge and experience to create engaging live events for diverse audiences.
This module stimulates students in viewing, discussing, and writing about films and other audiovisual media with increased sharpness, nuance, and depth. Students will learn how to analyze and interpret audiovisual pieces, their styles, and the meanings of different cinematic elements. The module travels through the evolution of audiovisual media presenting diverse theoretical approaches to the study of these fields. It also explores the nature of film as an art form and the critic's function in the industry and society. Students will be introduced to different theoretical approaches to analyze a movie and other media, including four key theoretical concepts for film and media criticism: textuality, authorship, genre, and narrative.
This module focuses on the latest trends and advancements in the media technology field. Students will learn how to create content using emerging technologies such as AI-generated video, Virtual Reality, Virtual Production, and 360 video. The module will cover both the technical aspects of these technologies as well as their creative potential. Students will gain hands-on experience in creating content with these technologies, developing their skills and understanding of the creative possibilities they offer.
Through practical exercises and projects, students will learn how to use cutting-edge technology to tell compelling stories and create immersive experiences for their audiences.
By the end of the course, students will have gained practical experience and theoretical knowledge in the use of new media technologies in filmmaking, and be able to apply this knowledge to their future projects. They will have the skills to experiment with innovative techniques and create engaging content for a variety of platforms and audiences.
In an increasingly digital world, people are no longer restricted to the role of passive consumers of information, but expect to play a central and active role by searching, filtering, and interacting with the information available to them. This module introduces and explores the creation of interactive media systems through computer programming. In addition to covering interaction design theory, the practical work will focus on the creation of software systems that deliver one or more types of media orchestrated by the user’s interaction. Classroom sessions will involve the presentation of concepts, delivering theory and showing examples of applications and problem-solving techniques, as well as individual and group exercises and projects. Students will be presented with different design challenges where they are expected to use the concepts presented and discussed during the classes.

The workshop emphasizes experimentation with advanced techniques and encourages students to take creative risks. By the end of the week, students will present their work in a public exhibition, demonstrating mastery of technical and creative processes. This module plays a pivotal role in preparing students for leadership roles in creative industries and enhancing their professional portfolios.
"Art Appreciation" is a Liberal Arts module that aims to develop students' ability to discuss, analyse, understand and criticise works of Art. Through multi and interdisciplinary approaches, this 2-credit module equips students with a broad overview and knowledge of the theoretical, historical, and cultural aspects and relevance of the Arts in general and the Sacred Aesthetical tradition. The ten sessions will focus on the analysis and appreciation of works of Art based on aesthetic value, historical context, tradition, and social relevance. The assumption, function, and nature of the Sacred Arts (such as painting, sculpture, music, literature, etc.) related to creativity, imagination and innovation will be at the core of this module. Students will learn to deepen their sensitivity to self, community, and society and discover their identity through Art with respect to their background, culture, and nationality. By providing measurable standards for understanding artistic intent and expression through the essential elements of Aesthetics and Beauty, Art and Transcendence, students may increase their Appreciation of the arts' role in today society.
This module provides students with an overview of major debates, trends, and factors that influence China's foreign policy. It will help students understand the pillars, principles and actors that shape the Chinese foreign policy. In this regard, the following topics will be explored in the course: the module will examine the actors, principles, constraints, and tools involved in the process of making foreign policy. On the other hand, the module will describe China's relations with the rest of the world through case studies. In order to achieve this, the course combines theoretical lectures, guest speakers, group exercises, and practical workshops. Additionally, this module will prepare students to conduct research on Chinese foreign policy.
Year 4
Capstone Project I is the first part of a two-module sequence designed to guide students in developing their final graduation projects in the field of media. This project-based module focuses on the conceptualization and creation of real-world projects related to communication and media. Students will use the audiovisual skills they have acquired in previous modules, either individually or in combination, to produce both an individual project for exhibition and a group film project. Professors will act as supervisors, providing guidance and feedback throughout the process. This module emphasizes independent work, creativity, and practical application of media techniques, preparing students for their future careers. Extensive hours outside of class may be required to complete these projects.

Capstone Project II is a practical, final-year module that serves as the continuation of Capstone Project I, guiding students through the completion of their graduation projects in media. This module emphasizes the execution and refinement of the projects conceptualized in the previous semester. Students will continue to work on both their individual and group projects, applying advanced media production techniques and integrating feedback received from professors and peers. The module aims to foster creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration, ensuring students are well-prepared for professional endeavors. Extensive hours outside of class may be required to achieve the desired quality and depth in their projects.
This module will address two major areas of communication - public relations and event management. It will focus on the study, preparation, realisation and evaluation of public events. In an age where technology permeates every profession, this module will highlight the influential aspects of technology and discuss strategies to achieve the proposed communication objectives.
Students will gain insights into the role of the public relations professional in building relationships with audiences, markets, and companies. A critical component of the module is public speaking, which requires tailored training to effectively communicate with public figures, clients, press/media, and general crowds. The Internship module is designed to assist and prepare students for their professional life after graduation by providing a comprehensive understanding of how the media market operates. The University offers a curated list of companies and organizations where students can undertake their internships, although students also have the option to suggest their preferred internship placements. The internship is intended as an educational opportunity, not a salaried job, though students may receive a modest remuneration depending on the organization. This module includes a few fixed sessions before the internship commences to adequately prepare students, and sessions after the internship concludes to assess their experiences. Throughout the internship period, supervisors will monitor students' progress within their respective organizations and provide support if any issues arise.
Creative Experiences IV is the capstone workshop of the programme, designed to challenge students with highly advanced and multidisciplinary creative projects. Students will collaborate with international experts to explore the latest trends and innovations in media production, pushing the boundaries of creativity and technology. This module emphasizes leadership, innovation, and professional presentation, preparing students to thrive in the global digital media industry. The final exhibition will showcase professional-level projects, providing students with an impressive portfolio artefact and an opportunity to engage with the community at a professional level.
Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. By exploring how interconnected elements, such as economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection are crucial for the well-being of individuals and societies, this module empowers students to become positive agents of change, today and in their future professional practices. The module will help students understand sustainability from a cultural and canonical philosophy perspective and put into practice the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Furthermore, they will become familiar with the Laudato Si” Sustainable Goals on “care for our common home”. In addition, this module will allow students to practice social outreach and to engage with the University of Saint Joseph’s sustainability agenda for Macao.
The course aims to develop a basic understanding of China’s historical relations with the world. Specifically, it explains the socio-historical environment and cultural identity of Macau, covering key aspects of its development over four centuries. The module will enhance understanding of the key socioeconomic aspects in the relationship between China and the Portuguese speaking world. The course addresses Macau’s past and present, including the basic concepts, theories, principles and spirit of the Constitution and the Basic Law. It covers residents’ fundamental rights and duties, political structure, economy, and culture. Furthermore, key events that have shaped its geographical space, its demography and its plural communities will also be covered. The students will study and explore aspects of the history, economic and administrative development, and the social, cultural and artistic patrimony of Macau through lectures, film, fieldwork, and reading of local writers and specialists who had written about Macau and its people.
