The AAUSJ Cultural Tour in Guizhou, organised by the Alumni Association of the University of Saint Joseph (AAUSJ), took place from 3 to 7 June. The tour was led by Dr. Teresa Loong, Vice-Rector of the University of Saint Joseph; Ms. Evonne Chiu, Founding President and current President of the General Assembly of AAUSJ; Dr. Benjamin Yue, Vice-President of the General Assembly of AAUSJ; and Mr. Addy Chan, Chairman of the Executive Committee of AAUSJ. The delegation embarked on a five-day cultural and academic exchange journey to Guizhou Province. The trip was aimed to provide participants with first-hand experience of the rich heritage of Chinese culture and the remarkable transformation of the motherland, while also strengthening ties among alumni, academic staff and students through visits to a higher education institution, fostering friendship and professional dialogue.

Upon arriving in Guiyang on the afternoon of 3 June, the delegation visited Jiaxiu Tower, a landmark of Guiyang, to experience the integration of Ming and Qing dynasty architecture with modern urban development. In the evening, the delegation was warmly invited by the United Front Work Department of the Guizhou Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China to a welcome dinner, where Ms. Liu Rui, vice minister of the United Front Work Department; Mr. Zhang Ming and Ms. Zhao Chunli, deputy director and official of the Third Division of the United Front Work Department, respectively, graciously received the delegation, marking the official start of the tour. After dinner, the group proceeded to Qingyun Market, where they experienced Guiyang’s night market culture and authentic local lifestyle.

On the second and third days, the delegation visited the Huajiang Canyon Bridge, the world’s tallest bridge, marveling at the magnificent achievements of national infrastructure projects. Professors and doctoral students from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, shared academic insights into the design concepts and structural logic of the bridge, providing participants with a deeper understanding of the country’s infrastructure accomplishments and architectural technology. The delegation also visited the National Big Data (Guizhou) Comprehensive Pilot Zone Exhibition Centre to learn about Guizhou’s leading position in the development of the big data industry. They viewed the “Red Ribbon” digital art exhibition at the Long March Cultural Digital Art Museum, which revisits the spirit of the Long March through modern technology. The group then toured the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) scenic area and the Pingtang International Astronomical Experience Hall, gaining in-depth insight into the country’s major breakthroughs in astronomical science and technology. Throughout the journey, professors and students from the Faculty of Data Engineering and Sciences engaged in in-depth discussions, exploring from a professional perspective the country’s advancements in astronomical technology, data processing, and the digital presentation of red culture.

On 6 June, the USJ delegation visited Guizhou Education University and witnessed the official signing of a cooperation agreement between the two institutions. Following the signing ceremony, USJ alumni, academic staff and students participated in academic exchange sessions and a ceramic workshop, respectively. For the remainder of the trip, the delegation visited the Guizhou Provincial Museum and the AYDC Public Art Space, gaining a deeper understanding of Guizhou’s historical and cultural context as well as its contemporary art development.

The delegation was formed by 18 participants, including Prof. George Du, Dean of the Institute for Data Engineering and Science; Prof. Jenny Phillips, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law; Prof. Wenmin Zhao from the School of Education; Prof. Ruijie Lyu and Prof. Vincent Ho from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities; Mr. Redfield Cheong, Vice-Chairman of Executive Committee of AAUSJ; USJ alumni and students. The Guizhou tour not only fostered deep interaction among USJ academic staff, students and alumni with higher education institutions on the mainland but also laid a solid foundation for future cross-regional collaboration. USJ extends its gratitude to the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region for their strong support, and the Bank of China Macau Branch for their generous sponsorship, all of which contributed to the successful completion of the tour.
