USJ and Sun Yat-sen University Signed MoU for Cooperation and Exchange in the Field of Philosophy

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation and Exchange in the Field of Philosophy between Sun Yat-sen University and University of Saint Joseph was signed on 10 April, 2026.



Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) have officially entered into a new era of academic partnership following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on the field of philosophy. The ceremony, held on 10 April, 2026, at the SYSU campus in Guangzhou, China, marks a strategic commitment to fostering cross-institutional exchange and collaborative research between the two prestigious departments.

The agreement was signed by Prof. Zhang Wei, Chair of the Department of Philosophy at SYSU, and Prof. Cyril Law, Dean of the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy (FRSP) at USJ.

During the proceedings, both leaders outlined the unique academic strengths of their respective programmes. Prof. Zhang and Prof. Law emphasized that the MoU is a blueprint for future synergy, aiming to bridge the philosophical traditions and research capabilities of Guangzhou and Macao.

To mark the inauguration of the partnership, faculty members from both institutions convened for a roundtable forum titled “Early Modern Western Philosophy and Religion, discussing topics such as free will in early modern Western philosophy and religion, as well as how philosophy can address the challenges posed by modern intellectual trends.

Representing USJ/FRSP, Prof. Cyril Law, Prof. Thomas Cai, and Prof. Martin Bai, participated in the forum discussions and shared their research findings. The forum helped the faculty members from both sides gain a better understanding of each other’s research interests and laid the groundwork for future collaboration.

The signing of this MoU is expected to facilitate a consistent flow of ideas, student exchanges, and joint publications.. Both institutions are positioned to become a central hub for philosophical discourse in the Greater Bay Area.
