Dear Colleagues and Students,
USJ’s campus in the Ilha Verde district survived the two typhoons with some limited, but severe, structural damage mainly to the basement area, which was flooded with the polluted sea water from the Inner Port.
As for NAPE1, a glass door was broken – probably by a flying object –, but no other damage was caused by the storms.
In the new campus, flood-water has now been pumped out of the basement and damage to essential campus equipment is being assessed. The academic building is functional, though the power provision for the internet on the ground floor is still not stable, and the top floors do not have running water. The residential building and library have neither running water nor electricity. However, we are hopeful that electrical power can be fully re-established by the end of this week, and running water should be available throughout the campus as soon as the pumps in the basement can be checked and repaired or replaced.
Elevators in both buildings are not yet functioning, and an assessment of the required repairs is being made. The air-conditioning system in the residential and Library building has been affected, but an assessment of the damage will only be possible after power has been reconnected to that building. Similarly, it will only be possible to test the internet provision in the Library and accommodation floors of the residential building when the electricity is turned back on.
Given the lack of warning about the intensity of the typhoon, flooding had not been expected. As a result, technical equipment belonging to FCI and most of the Ricci Library, which had been temporarily stored in the basement, were not moved in time and have been completely destroyed.
Because recovery operations are still underway and the IT equipment is in the final stages of being installed, a definitive picture of the situation will not be clear before the end of this week. The good news, however, is that the permit from the Public Works has been issued, and that both DSEJ and GAES have visited the new campus and are willing to discuss support for the recovery and repairs.
From our survey of the premises and the estimates of the contractor, CDSJ will be able to start classes next Monday, September 4, and USJ can expect to move to the new campus sometime next week. We do not foresee the need to alter any of the dates in our academic calendar for September.
Please note that USJ offices – for enrolment, payments, etc. –, will continue to operate in NAPE1 until the required infra-structure is fully operational in the new campus. Information will be circulated to all as soon as any change of venue comes into effect for any of these offices.
Note also that telephone numbers for all USJ offices will change when they move to the new campus.

Dear Staff and Students,
The super typhoon that hit Macau has brought death and destruction in its wake. I would like to express USJ's solidarity to those who have been personally affected, especially those who have fewer means to respond to such a testing situation.
From our preliminary assessment, we believe that all of our staff or students are safe, and for that we are deeply thankful. In that number, I include the security team at our new campus, where the storm had particular impact.
The new campus has been badly damaged, which means that the next academic year will begin, as expected, in September, but in recovery mode. However, as Chinese wisdom reminds us: "Success is a thought in the mind / and failure is a thought in the mind. / They have no reality apart from your mind" (Tao Te Ching, 13). This is, in fact, a learning opportunity sprung on us unannounced, not just a setback or an obstacle. Over the next weeks and months, we will work together as an academic community, both staff and students, to solve the issues posed by our move to a new campus severely damaged by the recent storm. But we will also open our minds and our hearts to the community around us in the Ilha Verde district, where so many others have seen their lives and property damaged by the typhoon and the storm surge it brought in from the sea.
As soon as we have made a better assessment of the situation, you will be given indications on how we will proceed.
Meanwhile, our Administrator, Ms. Lavena Cheong, and her team will issue practical instructions as needed and let you know how further information may be obtained.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
God surprises us always.
Yours sincerely,
Fr. Peter Stilwell

Jointly organised by the USJ Alumni Association, USJ Photography Club and Purple Student Press, a group of 43 alumni, students and colleagues of USJ had the opportunity to visit the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge last Saturday, 29th July 2017. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is a construction which consists of a series of bridges and tunnels that will connect Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai, three major regions on the Pearl River Delta and with its length, it would become one of the landmarks within the region. We are all impressed with this gigantic construction and we would like to thank the generous support of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macau SAR to make this happen.

Roundtable
Foodwaste Prevention (in Macau/HK):
Situation-challenges-recommendations
By
Prof. Dr. Franz Gassner
Mr. Morse Lei Man Sao, MES
Mr. Li Man Ho (Warren), MES
Prof. Dr. Leung Ho Man Homan (梁浩文)
Organised by the Faculty of Religious Studies
Tuesday, 29 August 2017
10:00 - 12:30
University of Saint Joseph, Seminary E06
About the Event
Food has an enormous social and environmental impact. According to UN agencies, the environmental impact of agriculture accounts for about 33% of the overall global impact of all human activities, some researcher put the figure even at 50%. In addition, about 1/3 of all food is wasted globally. Food-waste, taken as “country” accounts for the 3rd largest CO2 emitter after the US and China. But many people do not have enough food to eat. “Whenever food is thrown out it is as if it were stolen from the table of the poor”, claims correctly Pope Francis in his Encyclical Letter Laudatu Si’ (LS 36).
This project studies the situation of food-waste and its prevention in Macau from an ethical and theological viewpoint. Based on facts, findings, and evaluation, recommendations are formulated for individuals, communities, and policy makers. A special focus will be also on the cultural (and spiritual) factors hindering or fostering food-waste prevention in Macau and China.

The 8th 2017 USLS was held at the United Nations Conference Centre, in Bangkok, Thailand. It was a one-week training program for leadership development. The symposium brought together 907 delegates from around the world, more than 78 countries are represented.
The core objective of the symposium was to provide the next generation leaders an opportunity to engage in cross-sectoral dialogue about Sustainable Development, and how to tackle the global challenges due to rapid developments, which include, but not limited to the rise of globalization, climate changes, poverty, economic growth, and concern over terrorism.
Testimony from University of Saint Joseph 1st Student Delegate:
As a delegate, my horizon is broadened and motivated to reach out to the people in need starting with the local community. Various entrepreneurship and small-scale business strategies were encouraged. It is also important to create awareness and brainstorm sustainable development projects to benefit local communities and empower each other. Building a life and giving hope. Finally, it was a very good networking opportunity for delegates from different backgrounds to build relationships with common goals and respecting differences in religious and cultural beliefs. Personally, I am thrilled that I connect with many friends across the world.

Testimony from University of Saint Joseph 2nd Student Delegate:
We all strive towards a future of global progress. In this journey, I have learnt not only how to make changes but to make them sustainable. I have also learnt about how important self-care is when we are trying to make the world a better place. I have a better understanding of humanitarian issues such as the refugee crisis, world hunger problems, and education problems. The inspiring speakers have touched my heart. They taught me what the meaning of life is, ‘We should always try to give, not to gain’. I sincerely appreciate participating in this symposium, it inspired me to help others by giving back to the community. I’m motivated to improve myself that I can help people as much as I can. ‘Everyone wants a change, but nobody wants to change.’ I’m ready to be the one who takes the first action. I’m not only thinking or saying but doing it.

With the support of the Tertiary Education Service Office of the Macau SAR Government, Jorge Álvares Foundation and our Alumni Association, our Students’ Association organised the “Macau-Portugal Cultural and Relationship” Exchange tour last June 2017 with a group of 10 students from different programmes. Besides taking the Portuguese basic course, students had the opportunity to share experience with Macau students studying in the Catholic University of Portugal.
Students were also warmly welcomed by the Economics and Commercial Delegation of Macau in Lisbon and were delighted to have a direct dialogue with the Head of the Delegation. Through the visit, students had a deepen understanding on the cooperation of European Union, China and Macau. Apart from attending their daily Basic Portuguese classes, students have also visited the cultural and historical sites in Lisbon and nearby regions and learnt more about Portuguese culture.

Prof. Vincent Yang, Pro-Rector of USJ, delivered a presentation on “China’s War on Corruption – Progresses and Challenges in Implementing the G20 Anti-Corruption Action Plan 2017-2018” at Plenary 3. About the Talk

string(1386) "A group of 20 students and staff of USJ had the exchange in Fujian from 18 to 20 June 2017. During the tour, our students have fostered their understanding on the opportunities given to Macau under the “One belt One road” policy through the exchange of ideas with the students of the Fujian Higher Education Student Union and the Students’ Association of Huaqiao University. In addition, they have also visited various cultural sites like the Hakka earthly building and Gulangyu Island which deepened their understanding on the cultural background of Fujian.
On the last day of their visit, the group visited the Xiamen Planning Exhibition Hall. Many of the key cities in the Mainland have their own planning exhibition hall which introduced the positioning of the city. The group thinks that it is worth for Macau to have the city planning so that we are well informed of the positioning and future development of Macau.
Through this exchange tour, the members of the group has understood better the importance of the “One belt One road” policy and it is beneficial to both the students and staff participating in similar activities in the future.
