string(2008) "The University of Saint Joseph invited a consultant indicated by the British Accreditation Council to undertake a pre-accreditation review of the university, between 24 to 27 April. This was part of USJ's ongoing preparation for Institutional Accreditation.
The consultant, Mr. Ian Fleming, former inspector of BAC and QAA, carried out a formal inspection in the form of a mock Institutional Accreditation by BAC. The six areas inspected included:
Governance, Strategy and Financial Management;
Academic Management and Administration;
Teaching, Learning and Assessment;
Student Recruitment, Support, Guidance and Progression;
Premises, Facilities and Learning Resources; and
Quality Management, Assurance and Enhancement.
Of the 27 standards under these six areas of inspection USJ fully met 18 and partially met 6. The 3 standards “not met” were in the area of quality management, and this pre-accreditation exercise was precisely part of the consolidation of those procedures.
USJ received high commendation in this mock accreditation for:
- its facilities and premises, due especially to its state-of-the-art new campus in Ilha Verde;
- its library resources and education tradition;
- its small class size; and
- its support to academic staff for career enhancement and research.
Future action to be taken by the university includes consolidating its policies and procedures for clearer referencing, and developing an internal quality assurance manual to help enhance teaching, learning and assessment. The university will also engage students directly in future QA processes and performance reviews.
The result of the mock-accreditation was positive, though there is much still to enhance and develop. According to the consultant, if things proceed as they have done so far, USJ should be ready for international accreditation in a year or so, after settling into its new campus."

ABOUT THE TALK
At the mention of exceptional abilities, IQ and giftedness come to mind. However, the term exceptional ability refers to that capability of an individual who can achieve at a level of capacity that is significantly in advance of his/her peer group. In mainstream schools, students with exceptional abilities are always considered academically gifted and/or talented with a high level of intelligence or an IQ score of more than 130 or in the 98th percentile range. However, this is not always the case.
There are those whose exceptional abilities are found in non-academic areas and they possess the inherent inclination to react intensely to individually different stimuli and hence, amplify socio-emotional growth.
Termed as overexcitabilities by Kazimierz Dabrowski (b.1902-d.1980), there are five categories of overexcitabilities that are manifested in different forms of socio-emotional behavioral challenges: psychomotor, sensual, intellectual,
imaginational and emotional intensities. A clear understanding of these overexcitabilities will help teachers to better understand why their students with exceptional abilities are behaving in certain ways or manners.

About the Talk
The lecture will be discussing, in a very intuitive and accessible manner, the behaviour of materials, more specifically of rocks, at different conditions of temperature and pressure, and over time and under the action of forces. Then, the difference between elastic solids and viscous liquids will be discussed, because these are the two main behaviours of rocks, from the cold and low pressure surface of the Earth to its very high temperature and very high pressure core. the behaviour of elastic, viscous and mixed visco-elastic materials like rocks will be shown using analogies and materials. To finalize this introduction, the forces acting in the Earth's interior, and their effects will be included. Based on this knowledge of rock behaviour and forces, we will travel from the Earth's surface down to the core, through its main layers and their mineral and mechanical properties, and along the most dynamic settings of the Earth's interior in the framework of Plate Tectonics: mantle convection, subduction zones, continental and oceanic rifts, and unstable topographic reliefs. In the end, movies of numerical models of some fundamental processes related to Plate Tectonics will be shown.
About the Speaker
Fernando Ornelas Marques got his PhD in Geodynamics from the University of Lisbon, where he currently is Assistant Professor with Habilitation. His main areas of research are in Tectonics, Tectonophysics and Geodynamics, aiming to contribute to a better understanding of the way the Earth works. He uses modelling (experimental and numerical) as a tool to investigate the Physics governing geological processes still not well understood, at all scales, from the millimetres (e.g. the behaviour of rigid bodies in flowing high viscosity fluids) to the thousands of kilometres (e.g. subduction initiation).
For several years now, he has been a member of the Editorial Board of the prestigious scientific journal Tectonophysics, from Elsevier. He is currently the Head of Research Project MEGAHazards2, dedicated to investigate the instability of oceanic volcanic islands (Hawaii, Azores, Canaries and Cape Verde), their destruction by large-scale landslides, and the generation of tsunamis."

About the Talk
Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining, Milano 1688- Beijing 1766) was a devoted Jesuit missionary, and a truly innovative and cross-cultural artist. His talent was used by the Society of Jesus for diplomatic purposes for example to win over the appreciation from the Manchurian court.
All of the religious works Castiglione painted for Beijing churches and private chapels are lost. Significantly, we can still admire Lang Shining’s secular projects (such as the Western style buildings of Yuanmingyuan Garden) to try to understand his trans-formative mental journey in Qing dynasty China, as well as his contribution to early modern Chinese aesthetic.
In fact, working for three Emperors Castiglione bridged Italian sensibility with a Chinese sense of beauty.
The conference highlights Castiglione’s vocational upbringing in Italy as well as his Jesuit spirituality which laid the groundwork for his achievements in Beiing. This is a first step to better analyze which sources and references inspired Lang Shining’s masterpieces at the Qing court.
About the Speaker

ABOUT THE TALK
The people of Europe, in creating an ever closer union among them, are resolved to share a peaceful future based on common values. The roots of an ethical foundation are in Greek philosophy (humanism), Christianity and Roman law. Conscious of its spiritual and moral heritage, the Union is founded on the indivisible, universal values of human dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity. Based on the principles of democracy the Union creates an area of freedom, security, comon good and justice. EU seeks to promote balanced and sustainable development and ensures free movement of persons, services, goods and capital, and the freedom of establishment. To this end, it is necessary to strenghten the protection of fundamental rights in the light of changes in society, social progress and scientific and technological developments by making those rights more visible in a Charter.

About the Talk
During Mesozoic ages, SE China region, where Macao and Hong Kong are located, was affected by plutonic and volcanic events generated during the Indosinian (Triassic) and Yanshanian (Jurasic-Cretaceous) orogenies, overprinting all previous events in the
South China Fold Belt.
This event aims to contribute towards a deeper understanding of the geology of Macao and Hong Kong. It will be discussed the genesis and evolution of the Mesozoic magmatic rocks observed in this area and how their geodynamic evolution relates to each other.
Local and international researchers, with a large experience in the study of magmatic rocks and in the geology of this region, will give key talks to share their knowledge on the geological features of Macao and Hong Kong within the broader context of SE China. During this session, there will be a workshop where you can have the opportunity to observe rock samples and correspondent microscopy thin sections from this region. The event will culminate with a field trip to Coloane (Macao)."

About the Talk
Dysfunctions in brain cholesterol homeostasis have been extensively related to brain disorders. The major elimination pathway of brain cholesterol is its hydroxylation into 24 (S)-hydroxycholesterol by the cholesterol 24- hydroxylase (CYP46A1). Interestingly, there seems to be an association between CYP46A1 and high-order brain functions, in a sense that increased expression of this hydroxylase improves cognition, while a reduction leads to a poor cognitive performance. Moreover, increasing amount of epidemiological, biochemical and molecular evidence, suggests that CYP46A1 has a role in the pathogenesis or progression of neurodegenerative disorders, in which up-regulation of this enzyme is clearly beneficial. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects are poorly understood, which highlights the importance of studies that further explore the role of CYP46A1 in the central nervous system. We will summarize the major findings regarding CYP46A1, and highlight the several recently described pathways modulated by this enzyme from a physiological and pathological perspective, which might account for novel therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative disorders.
About the Speaker
Elsa Rodrigues is an Assistant Professor at Faculty of Pharmacy, Universidade de Lisboa (iMed.ULisboa-FFUL). She holds a degree in Biology and a PhD in Molecular Biology. During her Doctoral studies at Maria Celeste Lechner’s lab at the FFUL in collaboration with Patrick Maurel (Unité INSERM 128), she elucidated mechanisms involved in gene regulation of liver-specific Cytochrome P450 genes. In the last 10 years, Elsa’s main goal is to characterize the regulatory pathways involved in brain cholesterol homeostasis, and therefore to provide a basis for the development of therapeutic approaches for diseases that stretch from genetic disorders, such as Niemann Pick Type C, to neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s Disease. Her focus has been on the potential beneficial modulation of cholesterol homeostasis through ectopic expression or pharmacological up-regulation/activation of the neuronal specific cholesterol 24-hydroxylase encoded by the cytochrome P450 CYP46A1 gene.

usiness Knowledge Competition on 26th March 2017 (Sunday). 聖大金庸隊 carried home the title of the 2nd Runner-up.
聖大金庸隊 competed in Preliminary Round 1 against two other teams. Our team and the MUST team tied after the toss-up questions. Three questions were tossed up during the extra time. Our team got the first two questions correct with confidence and proceeded to the final round.
夢商承晞隊 competed against three strong teams in Preliminary Round 2. In particular, Macau Security Force Superior School (ESFSM) was the champion last year. ESFSM led us only by 20 points in the second last toss-up question. Out of luck, our team did not get the last question right and lost to ESFSM by a small margin.
In the final round, 聖大金庸隊’s performance was exceptional. Our team did their very best in the compulsory questions, the showdown and the toss-up questions, winning the title of the 2nd Runner-up.

About the Talk
The intention of Hugo Dores’ presentation is to question the limits posed by traditional and widely popular perceptions on historical events, usually determined by simplistic or biased explanations of multi-layered and multi-directional historical processes, as was the case of the missionary presence in colonial contexts. Beyond these limits lay many of the challenges of studying this subject. Based in a research centered in the dynamic relations between imperial powers and missionary activities and goals in the so-called third Portuguese colonial empire, during the Scramble for Africa, this communication will focus three main aspects. Firstly, the research paths traced throughout an academic project, highlighting casual difficulties and ongoing discussions; secondly, the historiographical perspectives approached in the research, such as imperialism, transnationalism and internationalism; and finally, the centrality of archival sources in any historical study and its importance to tackle misconceptions in History.
About the Speaker
Hugo Gonçalves Dores (Lisbon, 1983). PhD in History (University of Lisbon), with the thesis “Uma Missão para o Império: política missionária e “novo imperialismo” (1885-1926)” (2014). A significant part of his PhD research was carried out in archives such as the Vatican Secret Archives (including the archives of the Secretariat of State and the Propaganda Fide), the Portuguese Arquivo Histórico-Diplomático and Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino, the Belgian Archives Diplomatiques and Archives Africaines, the National Archives (Kew, London) or the archive of the World Council of Churches (Geneva).
He was a visiting scholar at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) and Brown University (United States). He is currently a researcher in the Centre of Religious History Studies – Catholic University of Portugal (2011)
He has been working on missions and empires (19th and 20th centuries), namely imperial policies towards missionary activities (both Catholic and Protestant) related to education and development, having published articles and book chapters on those topics. In 2015, he published his first book, A Missão da República. Política, Religião e o Império Colonial Português (1910-1926).
He is now developing his post-doctoral project - «‘Educating Empires’: International organizations, inter-imperial cooperation, and educational policies in late colonialism» - at the Center for Social Studies (CES-UC, Portugal).

On 17 March 2017, around 200 USJ students, staff, friends and relatives gathered in the beautifully decorated roof top garden of Nape 1 to celebrate "USJ International Cultural Fair 2017- Experience different cultures in USJ”. This event aimed at promoting cultural exchanges among the participants, broadening their perspectives and deepening their understanding of the diversified cultures in the world.
The event attracted numerous visitors from many other universities and local expat and ethnic minority communities. On behalf of the University, Prof Vincent Yang, Pro-Rector, welcomed all the participants and acknowledged the contribution of the teams of staff of OIR and OSA, the student society, professors and alumni. He thanked Bishop Stephen Lee and Rector Fr. Peter Stilwell for attending the event and the Macau Foundation for sponsoring it. Students and staff of 17 nationalities volunteered to serve various types of food which they had prepared in advance. A total of 9 performances were staged by student groups from different nations, with the support of professors, staff and volunteers. Everyone enjoyed the food, music and dance performances. Many of them took this opportunity to share their culture by wearing their country’s traditional costume during the event.
We thank Bishop Lee of Macau for his kind remarks on the internationalization and cultural diversity of the USJ community. Rector Fr. Peter Stilwell visited the student booths and talked to many students. We would also like to thank all the participants once again for their participation and contribution in this event. Their joint effort has made it a success.

About the Talk
Due to their location, estuaries and other key coastal water systems are loaded with significant number of contaminants. From diverse anthropogenic activities, creating a “toxic soup” for local biota, humans too can be contaminated. Due to agriculture and intensive land use, several million tons of fertilizers and pesticides are applied each year, polluting surface- and groundwater. In order to evaluate the impact of pesticides in aquatic systems, such as estuaries, a total of 56 pesticides were screened in different matrixes, with consideration to possible spatial and temporal fluctuations. As a biological matrix, the commercial species Scrobicularia plana was chosen.
The goal of this demonstration is to provide an overview of the results obtained for different Portuguese estuarine environments, with specific focus on presenting the used methodologies and data treatment to support future environmental studies.
About the Speaker
Catarina Cruzeiro concluded her graduation (2007) as an Animal Science Production Engineer, in the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (Vila Real, Portugal), in collaboration with the Aeres University of Applied Sciences (Netherlands). In collaboration with same university, CIIMAR (Porto) and CCMAR (Faro), she completed her master degree (2009), in the same area. Since then, she has been gaining further expertise at CIIMAR, mainly focusing on ecotoxicological and monitoring studies of several pollutants. In the same vein, she concluded her PhD in Biomedical Sciences (2016), at ICBAS (University of Porto, Portugal), focusing her work on pesticide monitoring studies and their potential effects. More recently she acquired a post-doc grant to pursue her studies concerning the pesticides. Along these nine years, she has been passionate to work on different subjects (cellular, analytical, and molecular) in collaboration with diverse mind-sets. Her continuous efforts resulted in 30 international publications, with more than 300 citations, in various analytical, molecular and toxicological journals.
