About the Talk

During the tour, our students have fostered their understanding on the opportunities given to Macau under the “One belt One road” policy through the exchange of ideas with the students of the Fujian Higher Education Student Union and the Students’ Association of Huaqiao University. In addition, they have also visited various cultural sites like the Hakka earthly building and Gulangyu Island which deepened their understanding on the cultural background of Fujian.
On the last day of their visit, the group visited the Xiamen Planning Exhibition Hall. Many of the key cities in the Mainland have their own planning exhibition hall which introduced the positioning of the city. The group thinks that it is worth for Macau to have the city planning so that we are well informed of the positioning and future development of Macau.
Through this exchange tour, the members of the group has understood better the importance of the “One belt One road” policy and it is beneficial to both the students and staff participating in similar activities in the future.

About the Talk
Fluorinated compounds have unique properties, and their synthesis was a major technological advance of the twentieth century in the field of organic chemistry. The introduction of the C-F bond in organic compounds has led to the development of new compounds with a wide range of industrial applications. However, such advances also led to the introduction into the environment of previously non-existent molecules with which ecosystems have to cope in order to maintain their equilibrium. Conventional wastewater treatment plants are not equipped to remove many of such compounds, and occurrence from diffuse pollution is difficult to tackle. Since microorganisms are the major decomposers of organic matter in ecosystems, it is important to understand the capabilities they possess to deal with these new entities - what do we know about the biodegradation of these molecules? What resources exist to enhance the biological processes of degradation of these molecules and to mitigate the potential harmful effects that these compounds can exert on the environment and health? Taking as starting point the synthesis of fluorinated compounds, with applications ranging from agrochemicals to the pharmaceutical industry, and their introduction into the environment, this session intends to present the potential of microorganisms to degrade these molecules and how these molecules may affect wastewater treatment, emphasising the applicability of some biological technologies for attenuating its accumulation and persistence in the environment.

About the Talk
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. The function of GABA-ergic neurotransmission is to inhibit neuronal firing. The GABAAR is a pentameric ligand-gated ion channel which consists of 5 subunits with the most common receptor formed by two α, two β, and one γ subunits. 19 genes code for these subunits, allowing for huge heterogeneity of GABAAR expression throughout the brain. Activation of GABAARs lead to a decrease in neuronal membrane potential via the influx of chloride ions, thus inhibiting the firing of an action potential.
A specific GABAAR subtype that consists of the α5 subunit is focused in the hippocampus. The hippocampus is the key centre for learning and memory and is especially essential for the formation of spatial and episodic memory. In particular, the hippocampus is involved in neurodegenerative diseases that result in dementia, as well as short-term memory loss caused by anaesthetics, many of which directly activate GABAARs.
Major efforts were made to target α5 GABAAR to enhance cognitive performance by blocking receptor function. Mounting evidence suggests that reducing the activity of α5 GABAAR can enhance learning and rescue memory defects in animal models. In this talk, the cognitive enhancing effects of GABAA α5 negative allosteric modulators (NAMs) in a Huntington’s disease mouse model will be discussed. In addition, findings related to memory loss due to anaesthesia and how this can be rescued GABAA α5 NAMs will be presented.
About the Speaker
Olivia graduated from the University of Aberdeen with an Honours degree in Biomedical Science. She completed her PhD in the University of Edinburgh, focusing on the mechanisms of peptide release from neuronal dendrites. In 2012, Olivia joined a drug discovery project funded by GlaxoSmithKlein at the University of Dundee to investigate the effects of compounds designed to slow the progression of Huntington’s disease. In 2016, she embarked on a project funded by the Wellcome Trust and supported by AstraZeneca to search for GABAA α5 NAMs to enhance cognitive performance in a mouse model of Huntington’s disease.
Olivia uses in vivo and in vitro approaches for her studies. Using a transgenic model for Huntington’s disease, she is able to study cognitive decline as the disease progresses and measure memory impairment using different behavioural paradigms. Drug effects were also quantified using confocal imaging techniques and biochemistry approaches. In addition, an in vitro correlate of learning and memory in the form of long-term potentiation is used to study the effects of GABAA α5 NAMs on neuronal synaptic plasticity."

For this year’s World Social Work Day, University of Saint Joseph (USJ), in collaboration with Macau Caritas, and sponsored by the Social Welfare Bureau, organised a forum on 20 May 2017 at the Auditorium of St. Paul’s School in Macau. Approximately 160 participants attended the activity to share the concern of promoting community and environmental sustainability.
The opening ceremony, with the participation of the honourable guests on the stage, was followed by the welcoming remarks from the Deputy Director of the Social Welfare Bureau, Mr. Hon Wai, and the Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences of USJ, Prof. Dominique Tyl. In his welcoming speech, Prof. Tyl reminded the participants that social workers need to continue studying, renewing their knowledge and enhancing their professional skills in order to provide better service to the community. This is also an essential part of the ethics of a social worker. Rector of USJ, Prof. Peter Stilwell, gave some closing remarks and expressed that the forum has provided the audience about some basic crisis reactions and some existing resources in Macau, it may help to prepare them on handling similar situations in the future. Other honourable guests included Deputy Director of Education and Youth Affairs Bureau of Macao, Ms. Kuok Sio Lai; Service Director of Caritas Macau, Mr. Yuen Chi Hoi; CEO of Macau Special Olympics, Mr. Siu Yu Hong; Director General of the “Associação dos Familiares Encarregados dos Deficientes Mentais de Macau”, Ms. Lio Sio Wa; as well as representatives of other social service associations.
Organised by students from Bachelor of Social Work, USJ, the activity aimed to raise public awareness of issues related to trauma and community mental health.
Aside from the organisers, the World Social Work Day event received support from different organisations including St. Paul’s School, which provided the venue, Lar Sao Luis Gonzaga, and Casa De Petisco "Sam Meng Chi" which provided snacks made by their members.
