On September 1, USJ’s School of Business conducted its annual MBA Student Orientation Day. In addition to introducing the new students to facets of the MBA, the day, which was facilitated by the MBA Coordinator Prof Michael Trimarchi also placed an emphasis on coaching the new group of students through various topics such as developing a learning mindset, group work, and case study analysis.
The library was also represented by Francis Nwachukwu, who presented an introduction to the USJ e-library resources.
As Prof Trimarchi explained: “it was a day of fun and hard work, and as always I’m looking forward to working with this new group of students as they progress through their MBA studies”.
Good luck to the MBA cohort of 2018-2019!

Working together to complete the case study exercise.

Lunch was enjoyed by all!

Francis Nwachukwu introduces the e-library resources to the new students.

ABOUT THE TALK
This talk presents a framework to characterize representative performances by experienced pianists in order to determine main influential trends in performance, derived specifically from traditional piano practices referred to as National Piano Schools. The methodology of this exploratory research departs from a musicological empirical analysis in articulation with recent technological developments for metric methods. It allowed an analysis of gesture and musical semantics by applying a multimodal approach for capturing the pianist performance based on the extraction of features’ sets specifically targeted to each piano school. This technique combines acquisition of capture of movement and post-processing of data (it can appear as two-dimensional or three-dimensional objects) 9 pianists playing on a Disklavier Piano (Yamaha Grand Piano that provides logic data from finger stroke pressure) using MOCAP (Motion Capture). The figures extracted from MOCAP device show amplitudes (percentiles) for each pianist, on each piano piece performed, 4 piano mainstream repertoire works which have been chosen for the tests with the 9 pianists. The extraction of features continued, different percentiles calculated on the trajectories of different points of the body, on each axis allowing to compare pianists and reveal their national piano schools.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Sofia Lourenço is a pianista and piano Professor at the Superior School of Music and Performing Arts at Porto (Portugal). She received the Doctor Degree of Music and Musicology by the University of Évora on “Tendencies of European Piano Interpretation Schools”. She is dedicated to the dissemination of Portuguese music from the eighteenth through twentieth centuries, having recorded 4 solo piano CD’s. she coordinated at CITAR the Musical Studies research group at CITAR (UCP) and has been supervising several Masters and PhD candidates.

The 16th APSSA International Conference 2018 in Malaysia
6 Representatives from the Office for Student Affairs and students partook in the 16th Asia-Pacific Student Services Association International Conference 2018 at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Kuala Lumpur from 6 to 10th August 2018.
The theme of this conference is Engage-Empower-Evolve: Pushing the Frontiers of Student Affairs. Through a series of keynote speeches and seminars with almost 400 participants from around 12 countries, it is a platform for the student affairs professionals to come together and share our experiences as a community of practice on how to enhance student learning.
There was also the student conference running in parallel which provided our 3 student representatives Lao Tou Kei, Gary (BED Year 2), Ng Ka Lai, Kelly (BSW Year 1), Tseung Loc U, Tolcy (BPY Year 1) the opportunity to exchange ideas with the other youth leaders of different countries on current issues like humanisation, physical and mental wellness, environment and globalisation.
Kelly Ng, BSW student
It was a wonderful experience to take part in the 16th APSSA International Conference 2018 in Malaysia. In this conference, I have acquired not only knowledge, at different aspects, but also met new friends who came from different countries like Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, Pakistan, Hong Kong, etc. that let me to know more about their cultures and their education systems and policies. In addition, I have learnt that we should not limit ourselves with our abilities. Before I joined this conference, I was concern of my language competency as well as the barrier-free environment for my wheelchair. These thoughts almost had stopped me to go ahead. However, my choice is absolutely correct. I have not only improved my English, I met new friends and learnt to accept the assistance of the strangers. I am very grateful for all the support and love that each one has given to me. Finally, as the other leaders mentioned :"Don't be afraid of your limitations, just do it !", I will try to go beyond my limits.
Derek Wong, Student Affairs colleague
I have broadened my horizons of Student Affairs by meeting student affairs professionals in person and students from different cultural backgrounds. Many of these seminars are very educational and have deepened my understanding on many key areas of the student Affairs and I was given an opportunity to learn the good practices from a lot of universities in the Asia-Pacific region.
Lydia Tong, Student Affairs colleague
By attending APSSA, I was able to know the current student affairs issues of the other regions, what they are facing and the solutions they have made, how they improve the students' learning attitudes and the wellbeing programs being offered. Among the sharing of the student leaders, the one that has inspired me the most is how UTM supported a student who would like to finish climbing the Mount Everest in three attempts and the university even allowed him to extend the learning period. It shows how a university supports student to reach their own goals. No pain no gain, if we want to increase the sense of belonging of our student, we should do more within their learning period. During the conference, I had more ideas on the roles of different student affairs organisations, they are not only focusing on student development but staff training which I find more ways for self-improvement. I would like to do more for my students, assist them to face their own weakness and enhance their strengths.

The festival is organized by CURB – Center for Architecture and Urbanism and curated by Prof. Nuno Soares the Acting Head of USJ Department of Architecture and will take place on 10-11 November.
Open House Macau had its Official Presentation on July 20, at
Ponte 9 – Creative Platform, and was attended by Prof. Carlos Sena Caires the Dean of USJ Faculty of Creative Industries. OHM curator Nuno Soares and OHM Creative Director Filipa Simões introduced the festival’s concept as an initiative to uncover the untold architectural history of Macau, by opening the doors of great architecture examples to its citizens and welcoming them to actively participate and engage with their favorite places in Macau. With this partnership the USJ academic community will have a privileged channel to participate in the event.
Open House Macau is the first and only Open House festival to take place in Asia, partnering with renowned Open House Worldwide. Established in 1992 in London, the concept aims to invite everyone to explore and debate the value of a well-designed built environment. Macau’s pioneer edition will offer visits to fifty exceptional buildings located within Macau Peninsula and provide first-hand-experience of high quality architecture for all to see.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) held its Congregation for Bachelor Degrees on 14th July at its Ilha Verde Campus, with a total of 162 students graduating this year.
The graduation ceremony was officiated by the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR, Dr. Alexis Tam, Chon Weng, and the Chancellor of USJ, His Excellency Mons. Stephen Lee Bun Sang, Bishop of Macao. The ceremony saw the conferral of Bachelor degrees in the presence of distinguished guests and representatives from the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the MSAR, Tertiary Education Services Office (GAES), Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ), Social Welfare Bureau (IAS), and fellow higher education institutions.
In his speech, the Rector of USJ, Prof. Peter Stilwell congratulated the graduates and expressed his hope that they would know how to combine skills and compassion, as in the recent Thailand rescue operation, to make the world a better place.
This was the first time the University held its Congregation in the large auditorium of Ilha Verde Campus, which proved small for guests, graduates, family and friends.
The USJ Congregation for Graduate Degrees will be held in September.

Organized by Macau Museum of Art with the support of Architects Association of Macau (AAM), this event marks the presence, for the third time, of architects from Macau at one of the most important platforms that celebrates Contemporary Architecture.
“Unintended Architecture” is the name of Macau’s exhibition, whose theme intends an abstract reflection on the "free spaces” of Macau through different game card arrangements, in order to create personalized interactions that reflect the harmonious relationship between people and space.
Integrated within the 16th edition of the Venice Architecture Biennale, the exhibition "Unintended Architecture” will be open to the public until November 25th.

USJ Prof. Nuno Soares, was a speaker at the Joint AAM / HKIA CPD forum “Waterfront Conceptual Design and Flood Control Facilities Design Forum” jointly organized by The Architects Association of Macau (AAM) and The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA). The event was held on the 23rd June at the Macau Science Center and was co-organized by the Civil Engineering Laboratory of Macau, Macau Society of Civil and Structural Engineers and Macau Society for Ocean and Hydraulics.
Prof. Nuno Soares presentation titled “Towards a Living Waterfront – Conceptual Urban Designs for Macau” suggests an alternative urban development path for Macau, that in contrast to its previous and gradual shift away from the river, intends to create a new dynamic where the large infrastructural projects, the new land reclamation, climate change, flooding, and the regional Bay area plan all converge to place the waterfront as a key factor in the Pearl Delta’s urban development. “Towards a Living Waterfront” showcased a series of conceptual urban designs for Macau, envisioning a new relation between the city, its citizens and the water. These works were developed under the supervision of Prof. Nuno Soares in the Urban Design Studio of the Master in Urban Design at the School of Architecture from the Chinese University of Hong Kong since 2013.
This was the first CPD jointly organized by AAM and HKIA, it was attended by around 200 AAM and HKIA members, speakers and guests. With a panel of six speakers constituted by architects and engineers from both Macau and Hong Kong, all presentations reflected on the CPD’s topic of “Waterfront Conceptual Design and Flood Control Facilities Design”, illustrating case studies and design planning studies from different technical and academic points of view.
“Waterfront Conceptual Design and Flood Control Facilities Design” CPD Speakers were:
- U Weng Lon - Head of Division, Hydraulics and Sanitation Infrastructures Department of Dssopt with “Inner Harbour Tidal Barrier of Macau”;
- Ao Peng Kong - President of LECM, Chairman of Macau Society for Oceans and Hydraulics, with “Flood Mitigation and Sustainable Development for the Ponte Interior region”;
- Nuno Soares - Acting Head of the Department of Architecture of University of Saint Joseph, with “Towards a Living Waterfront – Conceptual urban designs for Macau;
- Simon Lai - Senior Engineer of Drainage Services Department of HK SAR, with “Flood Mitigation Strategy and Improvement Measures in Hong Kong”
- Wilfred Lau - Arup Fellow and Director, with “Imaginaries of Resistance”; and
- King Kwok Cheung - Chief Project Manager of Architectural Services Department of HK SAR with “Flooding Preventive Works in Hospitals – Bridging of Organizational Silos”.

ABOUT THE TALK
Modern educational systems aim to educate all students regardless of their diversity. This goal might be achieved by placing students according to homogeneity based on assumptions about their capabilities. The philosophy of inclusion challenges these beliefs, sustaining that to learn and to be educated in heterogeneous groups add value to education and learning. In this talk we will present and critically discuss the recent experience of Portugal, where 98.5% of students with disabilities are educated in regular classes. We will also discuss concepts of inclusion and ways of organizing the school and the learning experiences in order to turn schools into fair and inclusive settings.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
DAVID RODRIGUES is a Professor at the University of Lisbon in the field of Education. He lectured in Portuguese Universities (Porto, Azores and Coimbra) and abroad (KU Leuven - Belgium, Virginia State University - USA and UNICAMP - Brazil, among others).
He has worked on international projects for UNESCO, UNICEF and Handicap International. Besides being guest lecturer in Spain, United Kingdom, France, Brazil, United States, Russia, Colombia, Cape Verde, Mexico, Bulgaria and UAE – Dubai, he is currently a Visiting Professor at the St Joseph University in Macau. Professor Rodrigues is the President of the “ONG Pró–Inclusion” and editor of the journal “Educação Inclusiva”. Since June 2015, he is National Counselor of Education in Portugal. He has published 31 books (Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Germany) and dozens of articles in specialty journals. He is reviewer of eight international journals.
Professor Rodrigues received the "Union Latina" Research Prize in 2007 and the "Pro-Inclusion" Medal of Merit in 2013. In 2017, he was awarded the “Distinguished International Leadership Award” by the Council for Exceptional Children - DISES (USA), distinction that was hailed with unanimous Vote of Congratulation by the Portuguese Parliament.

The delegation had a total of 25 delegates, includingProf. Alan Baxter, Dean of Faculty of Humanities; Fr. João Eleutério, Professor in charge of USJ Library; Prof. Maria Antonia Espadinha, former vice-rector; Ms. Teresa Loong, Director of Office for Student Affairs; Mr. Chan Kuai Son and Mr. Kensho Nagata, Vice Chairmen of Alumni Association; Miss Tam Wai U, President and Mr. Gary Lao, Acting Chairperson of USJ Students’ Association and others.
Ms. Cen Jiayi, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao Special Administrative accompanied the delegation and provided guidance during the tour.
The delegation visited the Bureau and Sichuan University, Southwest Minzu University (SMU) and Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU). During the entire visit, the delegation was accompanied by representatives of both the Liaison Office and the Education Bureau and was well received by the hosts. The delegates had meetings with officials, professors and students to explore possibilities of further exchanges and cooperation. The Education Bureau debriefed the delegates of recent development of higher education in Sichuan. The province now has a total of 119 universities, including 8 “double first class” ones, and a total of 12,000 overseas students, although only 38 of them are from Macau.
Sichuan University, a “Project 985 University”, hosted round table talks for the delegation to meet with professors and students from its business school, arts and news media school and school of foreign languages. The delegates deepened their understanding with the study, part time work and personal life of these participants. At SWJTU, the delegates were invited to tour the State Key Laboratory of Traction Power to further enhance their knowledge on China’s high speed transportation technologies.
The delegates were interested to know that SMU, as a comprehensive university for the ethnic minorities, offers many programmes that match the faculties and programmes in USJ, such as business, education, architecture, environmental protection, communication and media and religious studies. These programmes can be collaborated with USJ in the future.
In addition, the delegation also toured some UNESCO world Heritage Sites, namely, Dujiangyan Irrigation System and Mount Qingcheng, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. The tour enriched both the knowledge of the history and recent development of China, management of the UNESCO World heritage Sites and Giant Panda breeding research for the participants.

Call for Papers:
EXPLORING THE SILK ROAD ECONOMIC BELT AND THE 21ST-CENTURY MARITIME SILK ROAD: THE CHALLENGE OF CROSS-CULTURAL EXCHANGE AND COMMUNICATION
22 November (Thursday) & 23 November (Friday), 2018
Organising Institutions
- The Macau Ricci Institute
- University of Saint Joseph Macau
Context for the Call for Papers
China’s Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road (B&R), announced in 2013, has clearly become a major focus for the country’s efforts to sustain and further develop cooperative relationships with its neighbours near and far, and to work out mutually beneficial policies of economic development for Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Most of the public discussion so far has focused on infrastructure development, that is, construction projects particularly aimed at facilitating communications, travel, and international trade. Yet the “B&R” also intends to promote greater appreciation of China’s own cultural and religious diversity, respect for its neighbours’ cultural achievements, and a realization of cultural values that we share through our common humanity. The “B&R”, quite properly, appeals to the historic legacy of the Silk Road, which for millennia provided opportunities for the exchange, not only of goods and services, but also of ideas as well as spiritual and religious practices, and engagement with the peoples who cherished them. Indeed, save for Daoism, China’s indigenous wisdom tradition, all its other spiritual and religious communities—Buddhism, Christianity, Islam and Judaism—first found a home in China along the Silk Road.
Quite appropriately, the Macau Ricci Institute’s (MRI) hopes to make a significant contribution to the “B&R”. The work of Fr. Ricci and his companions itself is a significant part of the Silk Road legacy, and the friendship that Matteo Ricci enjoyed with China’s scholars and officials is extended even today through MRI’s mission. MRI therefore is dedicating its third annual November Conference, in 2018, to exploring the cultural aspects of the Silk Road legacy.
Each of the three dimensions of the MRI mission provides an opportunity for such exploration:
• The comparative appreciation of spirituality will enable Conference participants to present and analyse the history of the Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities in China, and the way these have formed bridges of understanding internationally.
• An understanding of how social innovation occurred as a result of the Silk Road can shed a welcome light on the challenges and opportunities that today’s innovators may face, encouraged by the remembrance of China’s deep history of engagement with its neighbours.
• The exercise of moral leadership within the “B&R” offers many challenges both theoretical and practical. The development of effective teaching and learning programs in international business ethics, a special concern of the MRI and its partners, is indispensable if the goals of the “B&R”, even at the level of economic development, are to be realized.
We would encourage submissions for the Conference that promote further discussion and insight of topics related to each of these. For example:
• Studies interpreting the Silk Road’s great religious and cultural artefacts, such as, the Buddhist caves at Dunhuang, the history of Nestorian Christianity, as well as the 16th century Jesuit impact in Beijing, dramatized in the architecture of the Old Summer Palace, “Yuanmingyuan”, as well as the Great Mosque of Xi’an, and Chinese Judaism in Kaifeng. We hope to learn more about how the Silk Road contributed to the development of China’s indigenous spiritual and moral traditions, and vice-versa.
• Analyses of how social innovation occurs through commercial—and thus inevitably cultural—interactions. The history of the Silk Road’s traders and emissaries will help us to understand not only the spread of technological advances, from East to West and vice-versa, but also changes in diet, agricultural practices, finance and local governance, and related areas of interest. The study of social innovation, of course, must be forward looking as well as informed by a realistic understanding of past failures and successes. Therefore, the Conference might also feature discussions of contemporary challenges highlighted by the B&R, for example, the development of intellectual property rights and protocols, the expansion of digital technologies through the internet, the dissemination of promising strategies for mitigating climate change, as well as models of universal health care for rich and poor alike.
• With the prospects for increased economic integration advanced by the “B&R”, the Conference participants might explore the opportunities for mutual learning implicit in pursuing our aspirations for moral leadership. The question of universality or convergence in moral values and ethics, the recognition of a common commitment to the rule of law, the perennial challenge of learning and teaching moral virtues cross-culturally—each of these will surely help to support the exercise of moral leadership in a world transformed by the “B&R”.
This is a preliminary list of topics that might be explored in MRI’s 2018 annual November Conference. The list is by no means exclusive but is meant to suggest a range of concerns that participants might hope to share within the general theme of our Conference.
Brief for Submissions
With this call for papers we invite submissions that broadly focus on the “B&R”, what it is, and how the opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and communication might be understood and responded to by scholars, entrepreneurs, business leaders, as well as students, faculty, netizens and others learning through social media. What can we learn from the historic experience of those who travelled the ancient Silk Roads that might help us to achieve spiritual wisdom as well as practical pathways of success? How might the “B&R” be used to advance the common good and enhance our capacities for moral leadership and social responsibility?
We encourage papers that reflect on the contributions made by the spiritual and wisdom traditions that flourished along the Silk Road—Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam—and the ways in which these interacted with Chinese traditions of Confucianism and Daoism. What is the impact of these traditions on our understanding of the common good achievable through cultural exchange and communication, and the many paths open to those who pursue it? Are there practical proposals, informed by the “B&R”, that we should be promoting for the sake of building a harmonious society?
We are looking for papers that bring together theory and practice, research studies and case-based papers that address the opportunities opened by the “B&R”. We welcome both careful empirical studies and thoughtful and well-developed conceptual works that explore this topic. Empirical studies should be supported by rigorous qualitative or quantitative data analysis. Conceptual work should be clearly grounded in the existing literature. Practitioner papers are welcomed to contribute to our understanding of effective teaching and learning, through research, reports and case studies that address any of the questions suggested here, or others that they believe should be addressed.
Submitted papers should have the potential to make a significant contribution both to educational and academic literature and / or organizational development in order to qualify for inclusion in the Conference.
Accepted papers for the Conference will be considered for publication in the MRI Journal.
Submission Dates
Please submit papers or an abstract of 500-700 words for consideration to Anna Cheang, E-mail: annacheang@riccimac.org, by 30 July 2018. Authors of accepted papers will be notified by 30 September 2018, and at that time will be given a “Style Sheet” with instructions on the length of the paper, formatting, the use of APA guidelines, and other technical details. The deadline for final papers is 15 November 2018.
