USJ Prof. Nuno Soares, was a speaker at the Joint AAM / HKIA CPD forum “Waterfront Conceptual Design and Flood Control Facilities Design Forum” jointly organized by The Architects Association of Macau (AAM) and The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA). The event was held on the 23rd June at the Macau Science Center and was co-organized by the Civil Engineering Laboratory of Macau, Macau Society of Civil and Structural Engineers and Macau Society for Ocean and Hydraulics.
Prof. Nuno Soares presentation titled “Towards a Living Waterfront – Conceptual Urban Designs for Macau” suggests an alternative urban development path for Macau, that in contrast to its previous and gradual shift away from the river, intends to create a new dynamic where the large infrastructural projects, the new land reclamation, climate change, flooding, and the regional Bay area plan all converge to place the waterfront as a key factor in the Pearl Delta’s urban development. “Towards a Living Waterfront” showcased a series of conceptual urban designs for Macau, envisioning a new relation between the city, its citizens and the water. These works were developed under the supervision of Prof. Nuno Soares in the Urban Design Studio of the Master in Urban Design at the School of Architecture from the Chinese University of Hong Kong since 2013.
This was the first CPD jointly organized by AAM and HKIA, it was attended by around 200 AAM and HKIA members, speakers and guests. With a panel of six speakers constituted by architects and engineers from both Macau and Hong Kong, all presentations reflected on the CPD’s topic of “Waterfront Conceptual Design and Flood Control Facilities Design”, illustrating case studies and design planning studies from different technical and academic points of view.
“Waterfront Conceptual Design and Flood Control Facilities Design” CPD Speakers were:
- U Weng Lon - Head of Division, Hydraulics and Sanitation Infrastructures Department of Dssopt with “Inner Harbour Tidal Barrier of Macau”;
- Ao Peng Kong - President of LECM, Chairman of Macau Society for Oceans and Hydraulics, with “Flood Mitigation and Sustainable Development for the Ponte Interior region”;
- Nuno Soares - Acting Head of the Department of Architecture of University of Saint Joseph, with “Towards a Living Waterfront – Conceptual urban designs for Macau;
- Simon Lai - Senior Engineer of Drainage Services Department of HK SAR, with “Flood Mitigation Strategy and Improvement Measures in Hong Kong”
- Wilfred Lau - Arup Fellow and Director, with “Imaginaries of Resistance”; and
- King Kwok Cheung - Chief Project Manager of Architectural Services Department of HK SAR with “Flooding Preventive Works in Hospitals – Bridging of Organizational Silos”.

ABOUT THE TALK
Modern educational systems aim to educate all students regardless of their diversity. This goal might be achieved by placing students according to homogeneity based on assumptions about their capabilities. The philosophy of inclusion challenges these beliefs, sustaining that to learn and to be educated in heterogeneous groups add value to education and learning. In this talk we will present and critically discuss the recent experience of Portugal, where 98.5% of students with disabilities are educated in regular classes. We will also discuss concepts of inclusion and ways of organizing the school and the learning experiences in order to turn schools into fair and inclusive settings.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
DAVID RODRIGUES is a Professor at the University of Lisbon in the field of Education. He lectured in Portuguese Universities (Porto, Azores and Coimbra) and abroad (KU Leuven - Belgium, Virginia State University - USA and UNICAMP - Brazil, among others).
He has worked on international projects for UNESCO, UNICEF and Handicap International. Besides being guest lecturer in Spain, United Kingdom, France, Brazil, United States, Russia, Colombia, Cape Verde, Mexico, Bulgaria and UAE – Dubai, he is currently a Visiting Professor at the St Joseph University in Macau. Professor Rodrigues is the President of the “ONG Pró–Inclusion” and editor of the journal “Educação Inclusiva”. Since June 2015, he is National Counselor of Education in Portugal. He has published 31 books (Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Germany) and dozens of articles in specialty journals. He is reviewer of eight international journals.
Professor Rodrigues received the "Union Latina" Research Prize in 2007 and the "Pro-Inclusion" Medal of Merit in 2013. In 2017, he was awarded the “Distinguished International Leadership Award” by the Council for Exceptional Children - DISES (USA), distinction that was hailed with unanimous Vote of Congratulation by the Portuguese Parliament.

Call for Papers:
EXPLORING THE SILK ROAD ECONOMIC BELT AND THE 21ST-CENTURY MARITIME SILK ROAD: THE CHALLENGE OF CROSS-CULTURAL EXCHANGE AND COMMUNICATION
22 November (Thursday) & 23 November (Friday), 2018
Organising Institutions
- The Macau Ricci Institute
- University of Saint Joseph Macau
Context for the Call for Papers
China’s Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road (B&R), announced in 2013, has clearly become a major focus for the country’s efforts to sustain and further develop cooperative relationships with its neighbours near and far, and to work out mutually beneficial policies of economic development for Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Most of the public discussion so far has focused on infrastructure development, that is, construction projects particularly aimed at facilitating communications, travel, and international trade. Yet the “B&R” also intends to promote greater appreciation of China’s own cultural and religious diversity, respect for its neighbours’ cultural achievements, and a realization of cultural values that we share through our common humanity. The “B&R”, quite properly, appeals to the historic legacy of the Silk Road, which for millennia provided opportunities for the exchange, not only of goods and services, but also of ideas as well as spiritual and religious practices, and engagement with the peoples who cherished them. Indeed, save for Daoism, China’s indigenous wisdom tradition, all its other spiritual and religious communities—Buddhism, Christianity, Islam and Judaism—first found a home in China along the Silk Road.
Quite appropriately, the Macau Ricci Institute’s (MRI) hopes to make a significant contribution to the “B&R”. The work of Fr. Ricci and his companions itself is a significant part of the Silk Road legacy, and the friendship that Matteo Ricci enjoyed with China’s scholars and officials is extended even today through MRI’s mission. MRI therefore is dedicating its third annual November Conference, in 2018, to exploring the cultural aspects of the Silk Road legacy.
Each of the three dimensions of the MRI mission provides an opportunity for such exploration:
• The comparative appreciation of spirituality will enable Conference participants to present and analyse the history of the Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities in China, and the way these have formed bridges of understanding internationally.
• An understanding of how social innovation occurred as a result of the Silk Road can shed a welcome light on the challenges and opportunities that today’s innovators may face, encouraged by the remembrance of China’s deep history of engagement with its neighbours.
• The exercise of moral leadership within the “B&R” offers many challenges both theoretical and practical. The development of effective teaching and learning programs in international business ethics, a special concern of the MRI and its partners, is indispensable if the goals of the “B&R”, even at the level of economic development, are to be realized.
We would encourage submissions for the Conference that promote further discussion and insight of topics related to each of these. For example:
• Studies interpreting the Silk Road’s great religious and cultural artefacts, such as, the Buddhist caves at Dunhuang, the history of Nestorian Christianity, as well as the 16th century Jesuit impact in Beijing, dramatized in the architecture of the Old Summer Palace, “Yuanmingyuan”, as well as the Great Mosque of Xi’an, and Chinese Judaism in Kaifeng. We hope to learn more about how the Silk Road contributed to the development of China’s indigenous spiritual and moral traditions, and vice-versa.
• Analyses of how social innovation occurs through commercial—and thus inevitably cultural—interactions. The history of the Silk Road’s traders and emissaries will help us to understand not only the spread of technological advances, from East to West and vice-versa, but also changes in diet, agricultural practices, finance and local governance, and related areas of interest. The study of social innovation, of course, must be forward looking as well as informed by a realistic understanding of past failures and successes. Therefore, the Conference might also feature discussions of contemporary challenges highlighted by the B&R, for example, the development of intellectual property rights and protocols, the expansion of digital technologies through the internet, the dissemination of promising strategies for mitigating climate change, as well as models of universal health care for rich and poor alike.
• With the prospects for increased economic integration advanced by the “B&R”, the Conference participants might explore the opportunities for mutual learning implicit in pursuing our aspirations for moral leadership. The question of universality or convergence in moral values and ethics, the recognition of a common commitment to the rule of law, the perennial challenge of learning and teaching moral virtues cross-culturally—each of these will surely help to support the exercise of moral leadership in a world transformed by the “B&R”.
This is a preliminary list of topics that might be explored in MRI’s 2018 annual November Conference. The list is by no means exclusive but is meant to suggest a range of concerns that participants might hope to share within the general theme of our Conference.
Brief for Submissions
With this call for papers we invite submissions that broadly focus on the “B&R”, what it is, and how the opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and communication might be understood and responded to by scholars, entrepreneurs, business leaders, as well as students, faculty, netizens and others learning through social media. What can we learn from the historic experience of those who travelled the ancient Silk Roads that might help us to achieve spiritual wisdom as well as practical pathways of success? How might the “B&R” be used to advance the common good and enhance our capacities for moral leadership and social responsibility?
We encourage papers that reflect on the contributions made by the spiritual and wisdom traditions that flourished along the Silk Road—Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam—and the ways in which these interacted with Chinese traditions of Confucianism and Daoism. What is the impact of these traditions on our understanding of the common good achievable through cultural exchange and communication, and the many paths open to those who pursue it? Are there practical proposals, informed by the “B&R”, that we should be promoting for the sake of building a harmonious society?
We are looking for papers that bring together theory and practice, research studies and case-based papers that address the opportunities opened by the “B&R”. We welcome both careful empirical studies and thoughtful and well-developed conceptual works that explore this topic. Empirical studies should be supported by rigorous qualitative or quantitative data analysis. Conceptual work should be clearly grounded in the existing literature. Faculty of Creative industries (FCI) of the University of Saint Joseph is pleased to announce its next exhibition of Graduate students 2017-2018, the
“FCI GRADUATION SHOW 2018”.
The exhibition opening will take place at the Kent Wong Art Gallery at the USJ Ilha Verde Campus, Estrada Marginal da Ilha Verde 14-17, Macau, at 6.30 pm, Friday 1st of June.
The FCI GRADUATION SHOW will be exhibited until June the 30th, 2018.
The collective exhibition groups the three departments of the Faculty of Creative Industries (the Department of Architecture, the Department of Design and the Department of Communication and Media), with three different exhibitions subthemes:
“Macau Elements: Bamboo, Iron and Light”, a photo/video exhibition by the Communication and Media students of the University of Saint Joseph;
“In(com)possible Design”, a Product/Furniture/Graphic design exhibition by the Design students of the University of Saint Joseph; and
“At the Mong Ha Foothill”, an architecture exhibition by the Architecture students of the University of Saint Joseph. The students' finalist works will be exhibited through the University Campus in three specific places: at the Kent Wong art gallery; at the main entrance of the University will be installed the
“X-PEAX Bamboo Pavilion”; and at the Design Studio on the sixth floor.
“Macau Elements: Bamboo, Iron, and Light”: a photo/video exhibition by the Communication and Media students of the University of Saint Joseph, Macau. Talented students of the Communication and Media Department at the University of Saint Joseph have selected a collection of their finest photo and video samples of Macau from their recent project classes to showcase the city. Based on their Autumn 2017 explorations of Macau, this exhibition and coming roadshow blends youth with vitality and the perspective of an evolving globalized city—with a contrast between its past, present, and future. Bamboo symbolizes ancient wisdom of China—even though bamboo is used to construct the new Macau on many new buildings. Iron symbolizes the constant construction of the city—as well as elements of its past. Lights illuminate cultural spaces of old village lamps to flashy resorts—and the contrast of the shadows in between. Music comes to life in the selection of student video shorts. Professor José Manuel Simões, Department Head of Communication and Media at the University of Saint Joseph said: “This exhibition displays the grasp that illuminates our students' potential side-by-side with their capacity for deep learning, within the context of our society.” Professor Simões added, “I believe that this exhibition demonstrates the technical and practical topics covered by the Bachelor Communication and Media program, ranging from audio-visual production to digital publishing techniques, reflecting upon the entire range of modern platforms. The main focus of our program is on how people use messages to generate meanings placing our students at the forefront of the contemporary information society.”
“In(com)possible Design”: A Product/Furniture/Graphic design exhibition by the graduate Design students of the University of Saint Joseph. Students were asked to develop their Graduation Projects under the theme of “In(com)possible Design”. The theme encompasses design projects that relate to the idea of developing compatible and consistent design products, where the two main concepts such as “impossible” and “compossible” are brought together. To be “incompossible” means to be unable to exist if something else exists, to be incompatible, inconsistent or not capable of joint existence. The “composability” is a philosophical concept defined by the German Philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646 – 1716). It has a logical sphere more restricted than that of logical possibility. Out of Leibniz's theory, the notion of “compossibility” can be simply defined in the following way: two possible are compossibles if they are possible at the same time. Impossible design is possible, should it be in(com)possible? The Design Graduation Project is a full-year project that brings to completion the students journey on the Design Bachelor. Professor Carlos Sena Caires, head of the Design Department said: “ These works should be used as a catalyst for the students’ endeavors after their graduation. Students should look for their design assets and where they see themselves working in the future, and use this knowledge to help in the development of their design concept and production of their design project.”
“At the Mong Ha Foothill”: An exhibition showcasing the graduation projects by architecture students from the University of Saint Joseph. This year, the projects focus on Macau’s Mong Ha area, and are intended to revitalize the cultural and industrial heritage of this area while enhancing the relationship between citizens and the Mong Ha hill. Students recorded and diagrammed tangible and intangible elements, using techniques of relational indexing to convert both static and dynamic conditions into a set of maps. Each student then selected a site, defined a program, and set a research theme for an architectural design project that is consistent with their theoretical and practical interests. While responding to the current environment of Macau, these projects address a broad range of themes relevant to local conditions: educational buildings, disabled care, public service, knowledge repositories, sports facilities, tourist attractions, environmental sustainability, and so forth. These are comprehensive integrated design projects that demonstrate a sound understanding and mastery of aesthetic, functional, material, structural, cultural, and urban issues. At the same time, each design is a manifestation of the individual student’s conception of architecture. Collectively, these speculative propositions for the future of the city are an exciting demonstration of the talent and commitment of the next generation of Macau architects.
“X-PEAX Bamboo Pavilion”: Designed and built by the University of Saint Joseph thirdyear undergraduate students, the X-PEAX pavilion is a temporary structure located at the entrance of the USJ Campus. Taking a nodal fixed-angle joint inspired by traditional Chinese joinery as starting point, the pavilion works with standardized modules and a rotational transformation to create an inspirational walk-through form. By applying advanced digital design techniques to vernacular construction materials, the pavilion is intended as a link between Macau’s historical building culture and contemporary cityscape. Celebrating the completion of the first academic year at the new Green Campus, it complements the end of year exhibition by USJ Architecture graduate students."

To culminate the Life Science module, a field visit to the Wetland Park in Hong Kong was organised for the Pre-University Students of USJ last Thursday, 17th May 2018.
The visit reinforced the students’ knowledge and understanding of the function and values of wetland ecosystems. They had the opportunity to observe, in the field, diverse wetland habitat types including streams, freshwater marshes, reedbed, mangroves, mudflats and wet agricultural land, all of which provide very importance ecosystems services. It was a long and hot day around the 61-hectare park but definitely an eye-opener and a meaningful learning experience about the value of our natural environment.

ABOUT THE TALK
For several centuries now European and American sinologists and novelists have imagined their own China and have narrated and imposed China according to this imaginary. By imaginary, I intend that clutch of phrases, images and beliefs which make up the commonly held understanding we have of a group or community (be it an ethnicity or a nation, our own or someone else’s) which dictates the way we perceive it or them.
Thus far, this Western imaginary of China has been globally dominant. However, in the 21st century, ‘China’, whose shape and form and categories we in the West
invented and maintained, is starting to escape us. The ‘China’ we have created, that we have imagined, that have dreamt up and of which we have dreamt, the China that frightened us as well as fascinated us, has slipped out grasp. We no longer have sole control over it; just as the West’s dominance over the world’s economy has waned, so has its ability to impose the planet’s global story. But before attempting to take stick of today’s China, we need to apprehend where that China has come from.
