Led by Director Teresa Loong of Office for Student and Alumni Affairs, the delegation from the United Front Work Department of the Guizhou Provincial CPC Committee visited the library, student activity center, residential hall, audio-visual production, design and fabrication laboratories and the newly completed laboratory of applied neurosciences of USJ. The tour was followed by the signing ceremony of a strategic cooperation agreement with the management and department heads of USJ. In order to expand the effectiveness of the cooperation channels, the Macao Voice Raising Association acted as an associate coordinator for the aforesaid business and helped to facilitate the implementation of specific projects.
At the meeting, Rector Stephen Morgan welcomed the visit of the United Front Work Department of the Guizhou Provincial CPC Committee and the delegation, mentioning that USJ is a highly international institution with the faculty from more than 70 countries and regions around the world, and expressed his expectation for more links and cooperation with universities and organizations from Mainland in the future, so that more students can receive international education at USJ. Vice Rector Zhang Shuguang introduced USJ's historical background, which is based on the close cooperation with Portuguese-speaking countries, making it one of the leading universities among the traditional international universities and playing an important role in the "Belt and Road" and "China-Portugal Economic and Trade Exchange Platform". Therefore, USJ has always taught its students positive and open-minded values in the humanities and social development. In addition, USJ also focuses on the arts and teacher training. Currently, most of the teachers in more than 80 non-tertiary institutions in Macao are graduates of USJ. USJ also emphasizes the development of intelligent technology and the environment by offering Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes, and continues to focus on issues of concern to the Macao community, such as the application of big data and smart heath care, so as to deepen research and development in this field. Vice Rector Zhang said that USJ was honored to have the support of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China to start a trial of recruiting students from mainland this year, and hoped to have more in-depth exchanges and cooperation with Mainland in the future. Based on USJ's teaching characteristics and the unique cultural heritage of Guizhou, they expect to develop a series of talent training and exchange programmes.
Vice-Minister Liu shared that Guizhou Province has achieved the major goal of poverty alleviation under the leadership of the state, and now the focus is on regional construction and quality development. Economic reform and opening up will be the development positioning of Guizhou Province. Guizhou Province is intensifying its opening up, and striving for new opportunities and cooperation with the Macao SAR. Guizhou Province happens to hold the same view on the development of big data with USJ, and USJ can develop research and exchange with the tertiary institutions in Guizhou Province in this area. In addition, the cooperation with Guizhou Province will facilitate USJ to promote Chinese culture and strengthen students' awareness of patriotism and love for Macao.
The signing ceremony was attended by representatives from Guizhou Province: Ms. Liu Rui, Vice Minister of the United Front Work Department of the Guizhou Provincial CPC Committee and Director of the Office for Taiwan Affairs of Guizhou Province; Ms. Wang Rui, Director of Office for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of the Department of Education of Guizhou Province, Mr. Xie Jiehao, member of the Macao Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Vice President of the Macao Guizhou Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Cai Wenzheng, member of the Chengdu Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, member of the Macao SAR Government Youth Affairs Committee and Deputy Chief Executive of the Macao Voice Raising Association, and Mr. Tian Lei, Executive Vice President of the Macao Guiyang Chamber of Commerce and Advisor of the Macao Voice Raising Association. As we share more of our Alumni Stories, we present to you the next alumnus that achieved excellence after her journey in USJ: meet Celia Yuen, a graduate from the Fashion Design Bachelor programme, and founder of Caelius Studio. In this exclusive interview with her, we look at Celia’s highlights before, during and after her stay in our University.
Before starting her journey as a Fashion Design student in USJ, Celia was previously studying the same course in Taiwan. However, it didn't suit her needs, and after a year, she decided to go back to Macau.
Upon returning to Macau, Celia had to choose an institution that would allow her to continue her studies in Fashion Design, eventually settling on USJ. Aside from the school’s positive reputation, Celia had another reason why she chose USJ. “I think the certificate given by USJ is really useful in Europe.” she explained, “I don’t plan on staying in Macao for my whole life. I think life can always change, so having this certificate is useful in case I want to work abroad.”
As she recalls her initial experience, she remembers her early struggles with communicating in English. “The first six months were a bit troubling for me because I really had to focus so I could understand the lectures. But after one year, my English got better.” When comparing the other schools she had been to, she praises the unique teaching approach given at USJ. “I really like the way they teach. They focus more on creativity and always make you think outside the box.” Out of all the inspirations she’s been given throughout her 4-year journey, Celia’s biggest one came in from her Programme Coordinator, Professor Filipa Martins. “She told me to just go try things and not be scared of failure, and so I did.”
During her years at USJ, Celia has gone on to accomplish quite a few things: she became the recipient of the CPTTM Fashion and Creative Education Scholarship for the 2017-2018 academic year. She also held a highly successful Fashion Collection for her graduation project, called ‘Rhythm.’ Soon after graduating, following Professor Filipa's advice, she decided to launch her own drawing and design Studio called "Caelius Studio". “I used to teach people how to draw privately. So with that in mind I decided to open a Facebook page and it doesn’t cost anything.” Since opening her Studio, Celia and Caelius have seen surges of success, establishing a multiple awarded platform for her skills. Additionally, she has supplemented her Studio by obtaining Level 7 and 8 Chinese Art Certificates for Sketching and Watercolours respectively.
We here at the University of Saint Joseph are very proud of Celia and the person she’s become and is more than pleased to see what more she has in store.

On the 5th of May 2022, the Department of Social Work of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) organised a Career Sharing Experience with Social Work alumni for the year 4 Social Work students. The purpose of the gathering is to build up a strong relationship between alumni and the graduating students.
The event was held on the 18th floor of the Residential Hall and partly supported by the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs (OSAA) as part of the USJ Social Community Bonding 2022 programme.
The event brought back more than a dozen alumni to their Alma Mater, all currently working for different organisations, including USJ's long-term partner Caritas Macau, sharing their interview experience and job-hunting strategies in the employment market.
The first half of the event included a sharing session revolving around each alumni’s experiences with job-hunting in the social work field, and the interpersonal skills gained working in the different social welfare agencies. This sharing session enhanced the students' knowledge concerning social work employment traits and work culture.
The second half of the event included a mock interview activity with the students. The alumni helped analyse the performance, pint-pointing the critical points students should pay attention to during the interview, and shared some interview answering skills during the activity.
Lastly, USJ invited alumna of social work and doctorate student Miss Marjory Vendramini, the Founder of the Cradle of Hope Association to share her experiences and insights on how social workers work with different professionals, including psychologists, with all the event's participants.
The event was successfully concluded with a refreshment and a souvenir gifting to the alumni participants.

The World Social Work Day activities, jointly organised by the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and the Macao Federation of Trade Unions, were held at the Youth Centre of Macao Federation of Trade Unions on 14 May, 2022.
This year’s World Social Work Day 2022 theme is Co-building a New Eco-Social World: Leaving No One Behind. More than 70 social workers, social work students and ex-offenders were in attendance. The day began with a play created by social work students which highlighted the importance of ex-offenders in family relationships, social worker support and being accepted in community. USJ Prof. Helen Liu, presented on the USJ’s Prison Outreach Programme, which she coordinates. Those in attendance then had the opportunity to hear from ex-offenders share their experiences and difficulties of re-entering society. After a lively discussion with government officials, representatives of ex-offenders service groups, and social workers present, it was concluded that Macao needs to continue to support the service work of ex-offenders. The organizers hope to promote the long-term development of relevant services and to attract society’s attention to the services of ex-offenders.
The following guests were in attendance: Ip Sio Mei, Director of Department of Social Reintegration of Social Work Bureau of Macao SAR Government; Ho Sio Mei, Director of Social Assistance, Education & Training Division of Correctional Services Bureau, Macao SAR Government; Pastor Wong Sio Kao, Macau Christian Prison Ministries; Chio Chong Kin, President of Noah Family Mutual Aid Association; Leong Wai Fong. Vice President of Macao Federation of Trade Unions; Prof. Jacky Ho, Programme Coordinator of USJ Faculty of Social Sciences and Education.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) has been ranked for the second year in a row in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings for 2022. THE Impact Rankings evaluate universities’ social impact and contribution to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Framework.
This year, THE Impact Rankings accepted 1,406 universities from 106 countries and regions, a 26% increase compared to last year’s numbers. USJ also increased its impact scope ranking on 9 out of the 17 SDGs compared to last year’s 5 SDGs.
The results, released on 26th April 2022, placed USJ in the top 10% of all universities, for its impact on Quality Education (SDG 4), attaining the 92nd position. USJ also kept its ranking globally in the top 20% for its contribution in marine sciences and sustainability (SDG 14), spearheaded by the Institute of Science and Environment.
Additionally, good institutional practices and active pursuit of scholarships and fellowships opportunities for disadvantaged students allowed USJ to rank in the top 35% in the world for the two new SDGs, namely Gender Equality (SDG 5) and Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10).
USJ also remains the 1st ranked university in Macao and placed at the 5th position in Greater China, concurrently with two Universities from Mainland China (Beijing Institute of Technology and Guangdong University of Technology) and one University from Hong Kong (Hong Kong Baptist University).
Commenting on the results, the Rector of USJ, Rev’d Prof. Stephen Morgan said, “The rankings, again, affirm USJ’s excellent impact on the world. Being ranked 92nd in the world for Quality Education reflects the rigor and care that students find at USJ. Our size is our greatest asset, and to be ranked among the top universities in China is a testament to our adaptive engagement with the community and wider world.”
To find out how USJ provides students with an education that follows the United Nations SDGs Framework, visit Education for the Sustainable Development Goals. The full ranking is available at THE Impact Rankings for 2022.

Child protection is not a one-person job but requires the collaboration of the whole community. The First Roundtable on Child Protection, organised by the Cradle of Hope Association and hosted by Department of Social Work at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), was held at Ilha Verde Campus on the morning of 29 April. The roundtable invited the director of the Children and Youth Affairs Department of the Social Welfare Bureau, Ms. LAO Kit Im, and representatives from the residential homes and youth outreach service units.
The roundtable was opened by Ms. Marjory, Director of the Cradle of Hope Association, explaining the objectives of the roundtable to the participants. The Vice-Rector of the University of Saint Joseph, Prof. Zhang Shuguang welcomed the Division Head of the Children and Youth Service Division at the Social Welfare Bureau, Ms. Lao Kit Im, representatives of NGOs, professors, and students from the Department of Social Work of USJ. He also thanked everyone for their trust in USJ, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. USJ is also looking forward to the University's future role as a resource center for the Government in implementing related services as a basis for supporting their work. At the roundtable, we were grateful to have Professor Helen Liu, Research Coordinator for the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education USJ. Mr. Ben Cheang, Lecturer of the department of Innovative Social Work, City University of Macau. To share "Promoting the Quality of Parent-Child Relationship in Residential Childcare in Macao: Implication for Practice and Policy" and "Suggested Key Content for Setting up Child Protection Policy in the Operation of Social Services for Children and Youth." Professor Helen Liu shared the result of empirical research to examine the perceptions of parents, residential home workers, and children on visits and parent-child relationships during admission to residential homes.
Mr. Ben Cheng shared the 4 P's (People, Place, Program & Procedure) as the core of the work of residential services. Such as NGOs should consider to request “Police Clearance” in staff recruitment procedure, the establishment of a complaint mechanism for service users, and the roles and procedures in emergency cases.
Moreover, children's physical and psychological developmental needs should be considered in different areas of social services, such as residential homes, outreach programs, schools, and family services. In the roundtable meeting, the director of the SKH Macau Social Service – Ms. Apple Siu, the director of YMCA (Villa Lok Tou)- Ms. Edith Un. The executive director of the Christian New Life Fellowship – Mr. Lao Chin Soi, and the representative of the UGAMM Youth Service Team – Mr. Kong Weng Tai, were invited to share on the topic of "Protection for Children and Adolescent: Practice in Residential Service" and "Prevention of Abuse and Protection for Children and Adolescent: Practice in Outreaching Service."
In summary, panel of the round table agreed to the following recommendations collated by Professor Helen Liu: (1) policymakers and practitioners should discuss short-term and long-term goals, implement assessments of the quality of visits and parent-child relationships, and establish a framework for reunification; (2) consider psychosocial support programs based on evidence-based research to provide emotional support and education; and (3) shift from a 'child-centered' to a 'child and family-centered approach on promoting parenting skills, mental health, and working with parents to guide them in enhancing their parent-child relationships; (4) NGOs set up a working group to draft service guidelines for child service programs in a collaborative effort with the government.
In conclusion, Ms. Marjory hopes that we can build up a partnership between government departments and social service institutes through this roundtable meeting. Creating a safe environment for children in Macau, formulating policies to protect children in Macau, raising the awareness of Macau citizens about child protection, and implementing "Protecting Children is Everyone's Responsibility."

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is establishing an incubator with two local partners, Attorney Bruno Nunes, Founder of BN Lawyers, and Marco Rizzolio, Founder of Follow Me Macau. The Agreement of Incorporation was signed at the USJ's Notary' office on 29 April 2022.
The incubator Macau Spin Incubator Center Limited is a project under USJ's Faculty of Business and Law (FBL). It serves as a platform for startups from Portuguese-speaking countries (PSCs) to incubate in Macau and be bridged to incubators in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and vice-versa. Macau Spin targets, in a first stage startups in Tourism Tech, Fintech, and Social Tech for Social Enterprises which are areas of research and development in line with the Faculty's strategy.
The strategy of Macau Spin lies in developing a network of strategic partners: incubators, potential investors, mentors, and experts in and of the PSCs and GBA markets, exploiting the strength of USJ in its connection and knowledge of the PSCs, as well as the geographic position of Macau as a city of the GBA.
According to the Rector of USJ, Professor Stephen Morgan, "USJ has a unique and privileged role as a platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries. This incubator provides a concrete way in which we can provide academic and professional support and mentoring to business who want to seize the opportunities this platform offers".
Macau Spin is now going through the incorporation process and aims to start running in the coming Academic year, September 2022. The first phase is a virtual incubator providing mentoring, networking, and startup support to its members from the GBA or the PSCs. Although the primary targets are startups from the GBA and PSCs, the incubator's service is also provided to local startups.
