The new office of Alumni Association was elected on 24 June 2020 for the 2020-2023 term and they will continue to strive hard to live up the standard of excellence of our Alma Mater, and to the best of their ability protect the rights and benefits of the alumni and the university. Rector Stephen Morgan and Prof Álvaro Barbosa, Vice-Rector, welcomed the Alumni Association before the Annual General Assembly Meeting was held. Rector Morgan also encouraged the Alumni to treat USJ as their home and the university will support them throughout their lifetime.
Asia is home to a huge diversity of whales, dolphins and porpoises and even the only vegetarian marine mammal in the eastern hemisphere! Right on Macau's very doorstep, two species of cetacean call the waters of the Pearl River Estuary home and a further 17 species have been recorded in close by oceanic waters. The region has a rich history of marine mammals and many Tin Hau temples display ancient whale bones, as a testament to the importance these species once had with fishing communities. Both dolphins and porpoise have been struggling in the ever more urbanized waters of the estuary, however, the cessation of the ferry traffic during Covid border closures has provided some respite and has seen the return of dolphins and porpoises to now deserted shipping lanes. Our speaker, Dr Lindsay Porter, will describe her decades long study of our local marine mammals and will provide the first insights to how dolphins and porpoises claimed back their habitat during this period of restricted vessel movement.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Lindsay Porter obtained her undergraduate degree in Aquatic Bioscience from Glasgow University (Scotland) then moved to Hong Kong to conduct her doctoral thesis on the impact of coastal reclamation on the iconic Chinese white dolphin – or Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis). Lindsay completed her PhD in 1998 and remained in Asia where she has studied many of the most threatened regions regarding marine mammal species. Lindsay is currently an Honorary Research Fellow of the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) of the University of St. Andrews (Scotland), the world’s largest research and teaching facility dedicated to the study of marine mammals. She continues to use Hong Kong as her base where her study of the Chinese white dolphin population now spans more than 20 years. Lindsay is also an Associate Professor at the University of Malaysia Sarawak and University Sains Malaysia, where she is assisting local researchers to develop skills and increase marine mammal expertise in the Malaysia. Lindsay is recognized as an international marine mammal expert and is a member of the IUCN Cetacean Specialist Group and Chair of the Small Cetacean Committee of the International Whaling Commission Scientific Committee. She also sits on the boards of two regional groups, the South East Asian Marine Mammal association (SEAMMAMs) and the Asian Marine Mammal Stranding Network (AMMSN). Lindsay is also the Asia Section Marine Liaison Officer for the Society of Conservation Biology, board member of the Association of Tropical Biology Conservation and the Awards and Scholarship Chair for the Society of Marine Mammalogy. Lindsay has also provided expert advice, as well as featured in, several documentaries on ocean health and marine mammals, in particular the award winning documentary “A Plastic Ocean” highlighted her work on Sri Lanka's blue whales.
How we detect and process sound is a fundamental question in auditory research. Quantification of hearing abilities is the technical basis for answering this question. In this talk, I will first present the anatomy of the mammalian ear, followed by the optical measurement of the mechanical vibration on the middle and inner ear, and common methods such as Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) used to quantify auditory sensitivity in humans and lab animals. I will present ABR results on disease models (exposed to noise, drug and gene modifications). For other research organisms such as the small larval zebrafish and drosophila, alternative psychoacoustic approaches such as the pre-pulse inhibition will be presented and discussed.
About the speaker:
Fangyi CHEN obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees in the field of Biomedical Engineering from Tsinghua University (Beijing, China). He received his PhD in Electricaland Computer Engineering from The University of Boston (2005). He worked as a Research Associate and Research Engineer in the Oregon Hearing Research Centre from 2005 to 2012. In 2012, Dr. CHEN joined Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech, Shenzhen, China) as an Associate Professor and became the vice president of the Zhiren College and the Executive Dean of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. His research focuses on the development of the instruments in otolaryngology, in vivo study of the cochlear mechanics, and functional assessment of the hearing and vestibular systems in animal models.

The Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) of the University of Saint Joseph is pleased to announce the opening of Communication & Media bachelor students' exhibition "ImaginACTION". The exhibition opened last Friday on 29 May at the Kent Wong Exhibition Gallery (University of Saint Joseph's Ilha Verde Campus, Estrada Marginal da Ilha Verde, 14-17), and will be open to the public until 19 June 2020.
The students' artworks explore several looks to human social conditions and formulate new imagery of Macao's city. Ranging from Macau's landscape (re)imagination, mental health, childhood nostalgia and many more, the final projects displayed in the exhibition not only showcase students' creative and technical skills but also offer a different perspective on what we see daily in the city. "ImaginACTION" not only strived to be creative in these topics but also tries to bring enlightenment and serious conversation to issues that are not easy to discuss conventionally.
The "ImaginACTION" exhibition will remain open for public access until 19 June, from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Mondays to Fridays. The admission is free, and we invite all the students, professors, and the general public to engage with the artworks as creative participants.

As the pandemic situation in Macao starts to ease, classes in higher education institutions, secondary schools and primary schools are gradually resumed.
In order to understand the latest status of the public security on and around campus after the resumption of classes, and to discuss the strengthening of the publicity and education of students' crime prevention and epidemic prevention, the Judiciary Police held a crime prevention exchange meeting with school representatives who had joined the "Safe School Network” from 19 to 26 May.
University of Saint Joseph (USJ) together with other higher education institutes and Higher Education Bureau were invited to join the Higher Education Institution session of the “Safe School Network” meeting to discuss how to enhance the crime prevention education for students of higher education.

Cities have become more impermeable and with an increasing habitat fragmentation and ecosystem degradation. Nature has been called back to the city not as an ornament but for its valuable services. Green Infrastructures act as a structuring element of the urban landscape by allowing connectivity between territories and helping to maintain the services provided by ecosystems, bringing several environmental, economic and social benefits. In addition, it promotes adaptation to the effects of climate change and contributes to the transition to a low carbon economy. Nature-based solutions (NBS) are inspired and supported by nature and use, or mimic, natural processes to contribute to the improved management of water. They can promote enhancement of water availability, improvement of water quality and reduction of water-related risks.
This talk will discuss the integration of Nature Based Solution (NBS) in cities towards managing water resources, offset the rising challenges from water security to population growth and climate change.
It will be delivered within the context of the project “Nature-based solutions for a cleaner and safer Macao” implemented by Institute of Science and Environment at USJ and supported by Clean the World Foundation and Las Vegas Sands.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) would like to send our heartfelt gratitude to all USJ Hardship Fund donors for offering financial assistance to the USJ students being negatively impacted by COVID-19 pandemic.
In April 2020, four international students received financial support from the Fund and the University has received requests for assistance from a growing number of students who are struggling financially. Thus, your continuous support of the USJ Hardship Fund is greatly contributing to the wellbeing of our students.
USJ students (including both Local and International Students) can download the application form and return the completed form to OSAA via osaa@usj.edu.mo. USJ will evaluate applications on a case-by-case basis, and all information will be kept confidential.
The present Coronavirus Pandemic and its consequent preventive measures are having a dramatic effect on some students’ to sustain themselves financially.
This is especially true of some of our international students. They chose Macao to pursue their Higher Education studies but now find the revenue from their home country compromised and they are not permitted to work locally. Some are unable to pay full tuition, housing and, in more extreme cases, food.
To tackle this serious problem, the University established the USJ Hardship Fund to collect online donations that will support any students in exceptionally difficult situations. It is being managed by our Scholarship and Fellowship Committee with the regular publishing of audited reports. The list of beneficiaries is strictly confidential and all beneficiaries must receive support from USJ’s Counselling Centre.
