“The University of Saint Joseph granted me the opportunity to participate in the One Belt One Road event, which took place on 19 December 2019. I was extremely grateful for this opportunity because the most unexpected happened; I met His Excellency, The President of the People's Republic of China, Mr. Xi Jinping. It was a great honour to shake hands and have a quick conversation in Mandarin Chinese with the President.
I believe PRC’s One Belt One Road policy is a way forward that has been gaining better understanding and support from many countries in the world, for being a win-win policy whereby there will be only winners in the long run as many countries like China walk towards partnership and sustained development. I avail myself of this opportunity to congratulate Macao for the 20th-anniversary celebration as a Special Administrative Region. The importance of Macao is well-expressed by the honorable presence of His Excellency, The President of the People's Republic of China, Mr. Xi Jinping. The USJ’s involvement in the celebrations shows very well the prestige the university enjoys in the SAR.”

I am truly grateful for having the opportunity to participate in this event which held on the 19 December 2019. On that day, I was honoured to meet Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China. This is the most memorable moment of my life. Fortunately, I had a chance to shake hands with the president and have a short conversation with him in Mandarin Chinese. I believe One Belt One Road policy is set to bring win-win results in the world, and in the process lift millions of people out of poverty, raise living standards and connect the world in a way never before seen with the main aim of promoting intercontinental trade and building infrastructure to connect Europe, Asia and Africa through land and sea.”

The city of Porto has registered a very significant growth of tourism, with significant economic results in the city. Over the past 5 years, tourism revenues and business opportunities have completely altered the city's historic centre. It is in this geographical setting that are located the churches and the Museum of São Francisco, a unique architectural complex in Portugal, visited by almost 400,000 people annually. From tourism income, in a continuous growth, there was a profound renewal of the institution's Cultural Heritage. In addition to the policy of valorization of movable and immovable heritage, the cultural income made possible a renovation of the hospital and the sustainability of the assistance activities promoted by the Third Order of Saint Francis of Porto.
It is often reported that high-ability students may experience obstacles and challenges along the way to choosing their career path. They can be helped tremendously in schools and colleges by planned programmes of learning experiences that lead them to understand fully the world of work, identify their own potential talents and interests, and develop transferable and adaptive skills that can make full use of their talents in a future career.
Effective practices in talent development, career education, and individual life planning need to be based on sound research evidence of what works best, and facilitated by appropriately trained teachers and other career professionals. However, in many countries, talent development and career education for high-ability students occupies only a marginal place in school curricula. Given the importance of this topic for the individuals and for society, it needs to receive much greater emphasis. This lecture introduces the concepts and research evidence related to career and talent development. Cases will be described that illustrate the challenges and opportunities that exist for high-ability students in schools and colleges; and effective support strategies that can be used by teachers and parents will be explored. The lecture will conclude with a synthesis of key points from the lecture and discussion.
