EXHIBITION
01.09 - 30.09 / 2020
@Kent Wong Exhibition Gallery, Ilha Verde Campus, Univeristy of Saint Joseph
Join us for an exploration of this local coastal treasure and uncover the unique world of mangroves!
Opening Times
Monday to Friday | 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM
Saturdays | 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Mangrove forests are one of the most valuable ecosystems on earth and an important natural coastal treasure. They protect our coastlines from rising sea levels and extreme weather events, help mitigate climate change, improve coastal water quality, and host a wide variety of flora and fauna. Known in Chinese as紅樹林 (red forest), mangroves are unique, living along with intertidal and estuarine environments, where the land meets the sea.
Macao is home to a thriving mangrove forest that spans approximately 4km of the Taipa-Cotai coastline. Through scientific display boards, photographs, films, and interactive tank models, this exhibition will showcase the local mangroves ecosystem that makes up an essential part of Macao’s natural environment. Moreover, mangroves artwork pieces from various local school students will also be on display. The exhibition, complemented by public talks and guided field visits to the local mangroves sites, aims to raise community awareness and curiosity, and encourage people to cherish this valuable habitat.
For more information regarding the exhibition, please contact Karen Arano Tagulao - karentagulao@usj.edu.mo.

Fr. Matthias Christian SVD (田默迪) passed away today July 22nd 2020 in Cardinal Tien Memorial Hospital in Taipei around noon time. He was born 1941 during the Second World War, in Grossarl, in the mountainous area of Salzburg, Austria. He entered the Minor Seminary Borromaeum in Salzburg, and in 1960 he joined the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD) in St. Gabriel, near Vienna, Austria. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1966 in St. Gabriel’s, Austria.
Fr. Matthias arrived in 1968 in Taiwan coming by ship, studied Chinese and finished a Master in Chinese Philosophy at Fu Jen Catholic University. The Chinese Catholic convert, philosopher, lawyer, and diplomat John Wu Ching-Hsiung 吳經熊 (1899-1986) became his main partner of dialogue. Fr. Matthias wrote his Doctorate in Philosophy on John Wu entitled “Philosophy of Law Beyond East and West: A Comparative Analyses of the Early Thoughts in Philosophy of Law of John C. H. Wu / 東西方之間的法律哲學:吳經熊早期法律哲學思想之比較研究” (University of Vienna, 1986). For many years Fr. Matthias taught at Fu Jen Catholic University and served in Campus ministry, always eager to dialogue with Chinese people and traditions in order to deepen mutual understanding and respect.
In 2008, he was called to Macau to teach philosophy and core modules at the Inter-University Institute (IIUM) as full-time staff of FRS. After becoming Emeritus at USJ in 2014, he was asked by his General Superior in Rome to go to Juba, South Sudan, to teach philosophy in more dangerous circumstances. Fr. Matthias was always ready to take on new challenges as a missionary. He retired to Taiwan in 2016, continuing to offer lectures as Sinologist and philosopher, and to serve in a small parish in Taipei. In 2017 he suffered a severe operation on his lungs. Although he never fully recovered from his sickness, he continued to give talks at universities and served the people of his parish.
“I am a catholic priest and missionary who lived more then forty years in study and dialogue with Chinese culture and people. Though I am an Austrian and love my country, I feel at the same time a deep concern for China, its people, and its great tradition as if it were my own homeland.” Fr. Matthias was deeply convinced of the profound relevance of the Gospel for China, but similarly of the relevance of China for world and Church, beyond East and West.
May the Lord of Life reward him with eternal peace.

About the talk
The Rainbow vent field is vigorous ultramafic rock hosted seafloor hydrothermal system located in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). This system is quite remarkable due to its record high temperature for MAR fluids, low pH and metal-rich nature (e.g., Fe-Cu-Au-Co) within a non-transform discontinuity. I will revisit the geology and geochemistry of the system and integrate that knowledge with more recent published data (numerical simulations, Zn-Cu-Fe isotope systematics, high resolution magnetics and seismic refraction). The purpose being, obtain a more complete picture of the seafloor and sub-seafloor processes that make the Rainbow such a unique system.
About the speaker
Short bio: A. Filipa A. Marques has graduated in Geology at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, and obtained her PhD at the same institution. Filipa has focused her research on seafloor hydrothermal systems and their metallogenesis. Specifically, the Rainbow Vent Field on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, triggering its classification as a prototypical modern analogue of mafic-ultramafic seafloor massive sulfide. Filipa Marques was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Toronto, a researcher and Invited Professor at the University of Lisbon and an Associate Professor at the University of Bergen. Filipa is a volunteer fellow at the CSIRO's Australian Resources Research Centre, and a fellow at the Geological Society of London.

USJ architecture students propose radical green architecture concepts for Ilha Verde
Green Link is the 2020 architecture graduate exhibition now open to the public at the USJ Ilha Verde Campus
Projects from the University of Saint Joseph (USJ)'s architecture students, exhibit as part of the 2020 graduation show under the theme Green Link, aim to improve the Ilha Verde urban design and to envision new purposes for the area. The exhibition features a selection of ten projects of the graduating students from the Bachelor of Architectural Studies at USJ.
This year's architecture graduation studio started with a team work that identified the problems and opportunities in the Ilha Verde neighborhood, and reimagined its urban fabric with a new conceptual masterplan and innovative architecture exploring a greener lifestyle, that would promote social equity and environmental health.
The individual projects developed by each student materialise the key ideas of the plan, with proposals ranging from housing developments to community centres, hotels, libraries, museums, and sports centres. All while expanding the public space and incorporating sustainable design practices, with a high green coverage for all proposed buildings.
According to Ar. Nuno Soares, Acting-Head of USJ’s Department of Architecture and the graduation project’s tutor, the unifying aim across the projects was “to creatively explore the interaction with nature to generate innovative architectural concepts able to able give a meaningful contribution to improve the surrounding context”.
The exhibition includes projects by Frederick Tupaz Cabio, Isaac Ho, Ian Leong, Mamadú Seck, Phillia Hao Hsin Chiang, Travis Lai, Joana Wong Tsz Yin, Natalie Ho I Fu, Ida Lei, and Vanda Chan.
The Department of Architecture invites all interested to visit the exhibition at the Kent Wong Exhibition Gallery, at the USJ Ilha Verde Campus until 15 July, and attend the Sharing Session on Saturday, 11 July, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Students will share the underlying concepts and processes of their projects and will welcome public feedback, that can help them design successful projects in their future as architects in Macao and abroad.
About USJ’s Architectural Programme
“As the first and only Bachelor of Architectural Studies in Macao, our curriculum was designed to follow international standards of architectural education while exploring the specific conditions of our location and cultural context. The curriculum is rooted in tectonics and sustainability, addressing four main themes: high-density housing; heritage management and conservation; experimental material fabrication; innovative mixed-use architecture.”
“Our programme follow an idealistic yet pragmatic approach, looking to Macao and the Pearl River Delta as a laboratory to imagine and test new spatial answers to contemporary challenges and opportunities. We encourage students to generate innovative and original architectural and urban forms, designed from the public perspective, taking the potential of its programme and the connection to the existing context as a starting point to create vibrant future realities.”
“USJ’s architectural programme emphasises ethics as well as expertise, encouraging students to be socially committed and generous, designing for the common good. We strive to form innovative and skillful architects committed to contributing to improve the future of or citizens and cities by improving the design of the daily spaces where human activities take place.”

About the graduation projects

Interference by Frederick Tupaz Cabio
The design of this building arises from the concept of interference, that breaks a solid object into two parts. The crack generated by interference creates a well-ventilated design, and provides a nest for greeneries. The design results in two towers – Residential building and Commercial building – with the bottom as the common area, with retail, shopping and restaurants. Through inference, if a crest of a wave meets a crest of another wave, which in this case is the crack generated from interference, then the amplitude is the sum of the individual amplitudes, designing a strong bond of community in the building.

Floating Library by Isaac Ho
Inspired by the luxurious green of Ilha Verde, this project is a public library by the waterfront that aims to create a new centrality and gathering place for residents and visitors. The design follows a simple concept of hanging boxes to generate a dynamic set of floating volumes at different heights connected by a continuous ramp. This volumetric composition generates visual permeability, void areas and transparency throughout the building, making it inviting and iconic. It allows people to look through the building from different vantage points to see the waterfront, the different spaces and paths.

Dynamic Suspension by Ian Leong
Dynamic Suspension is an innovative and ambitious conceptual prototype for the future of residential buildings in Macao, presenting an alternative to the current repetitive mass housing models. Implemented through an ingenious stacking of floor plans with different layouts creating a layered effect. The resulting volumetric composition is complex and diverse, each unit is made of several volumes one for each interior compartment, and explore the views around the building. One of the key advantages of this arrangement is the availability of ample outdoor spaces and the singularity of each apartment.

Fracture by Mamadú Seck
This project is an Intergenerational Care Centre, which seeks to bring youngsters and seniors together in a mutually beneficial interaction. Inspired by a fracture observed at the Ilha Verde hill, the project concept aims to make a bridge between those two completely distinct generations, creating an interior space that would host them, but also expressing it in the exterior of the building. The design evolved with a fragmentation of the volume into four different shapes, each one with its own identity and function, making the fracture the unifying element that brings it all together and provides its character.

Daily Frame by Phillia Hao Hsin Chiang
Located at the base of the Ilha Verde mountain, this project proposes an alternative model for mass housing, creating a mixed-use complex that combines residential units, public space, offices, educational facilities, shops and restaurants, it goes beyond architecture and tries to create a small urban space. The volumetric composition of this project starts from two simple L-shaped units following the mountain path while framing a sequence of open spaces. The volumetric shift of each unit generates a series of interstitial spaces between the units, creating gaps to be used as private balconies and shared pocket spaces.

Vertical Duality by Travis Lai
This project is a prototype for a new boutique hotel at the Ilha Verde edge that explores the architectural potential and spatial quality of a common hotel project. The concept of Vertical Duality is reflected in the vertical circulation as the key structure in concrete, and the rooms as cantilevers in metal and wood. There is simultaneously formal independence and functional dependence, creating a clear spatial duality. This project and its spatial composition express the potential of vertical duality: on the programme – circulation/ inhabitation; on tectonics – concrete/ wood; on massing – regular/irregular.

Shifting Decks by Joana Wong Tsz Yin
This project is conceived as a Learning Centre that can inspire the process of learning. Each floor has a common central space, open to the outside – the Deck – and each Deck has a different orientation towards a specific viewpoint: the mountain, the waterfront, the city, the horizon, the street. The design strategy follows a continuous path, creating a dynamic momentum shifting from floor to floor, following the movement of escalation upwards. The sequence of free form plans creates a shift from the norm generating a sense of progress, intensifying the spatial experience.

Tartan by Natalie Ho I Fu
Tartan is an architectural and urban project that aims to create a sport complex as a micro-cosmos on the foothill of Green Island. This project explores the open space between buildings as the central space for the human experience and interaction. The main concept is to extend a tartan mosaic covering the entire plot, to create a tri-dimensional landscape. Each component follows its own specifications but similar set of rules, resulting into a diverse but coherent massing and spatial experience. The end result is not just a building but an urban landscape, that invites users and passersby to explore, interact and discover multiple levels and spaces with an interactive experience.

Green Unit Scapes by Ida Lei
The Green Unit Scapes is a new housing prototype, deeply inspired by its location, at Ilha Verde, that aims to create a landscape of green residential units in dialogue with nature and its surroundings. Composed of two towers on the ground level that approach as they raise, connecting at the top level. The aggregating units on each floor, form rectangular volumes with a zig-zag perimeter, with a small shifting movement from floor to floor that produces an overlap creating a landscape of independent green balconies, one for each apartment.

The Wall Art Gallery by Vanda Chan
Located by the waterfront this project is a multifunctional building that combines three different but interrelated functions – gallery, workshop/workplace and housing. The design concept is Wall Density and explores the idea of anti-gravity, challenging people’s perception of what is possible to build. Following a counterintuitive design strategy, the wall density gradually increases from the lowest at the ground floor to the highest at the top floor. The lower floor is more open to the public, gradually closing up on the upper floors. The top floor is a small village of patio houses full of natural light, reinterpreting Macao’s traditional patios.

On 29 June 2020, at 2:30 pm, MGM/USJ Spectacle workshop outcome presentation was held at MGM Cotai Spectacle area. MGM Cotai Spectacle has an area with 25 LED large screens that are permanently displaying several video art pieces. This is an annual event which officially launched the videos as well as the ones from this year's edition. MGM offered the students of the Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) the opportunity to create content for this digital canvas. The students from both editions and the representatives from MGM Cotai and USJ were present.
Applications for these workshops were opened to all FCI students of Communication and Media and Digital Cinema programmes. A team of 5 different students was selected each year based on their skills and motivation and then worked on the concept, design, shoot, and post-production of these videos.
The first workshop in 2019 resulted in 5 sequences that were displayed in different screens that interacted with each other of real-sized people trying to solve fictional mal-functions of the panels.
The second workshop in 2020 resulted in 24 videos to mark the different hours of the day, each one using a different technique, from time-lapse to stop-motion, animation and green-screen, etc.

ABOUT THE TALK
Looking back at the history of Christianity in China we realize how for centuries the missionaries have struggled to confront many challenges related to the inculturation of the Gospel. More specifically during the Yuan and Ming Dynasties we may recall Franciscan, Dominican and Jesuit missionaries who have distinguished themselves in this great labour. However, the Gospel of Christ has more ancient roots in the mission of the Eastern Syrian monks who at the beginning of the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE) announced for the first time the story of Jesus to the Chinese people using Chinese language.
The formidable task, accomplished by the so-called “Nestorian missionaries” or the members of the“luminous teaching” (“Jingjiao”) community, chronologically constitutes the first documented engagement between Jesus’ message and the Chinese people. Two documents, entitled “Thus have I heard: On the listening of the Messiah” and “Discourse on the One-God” present a focus on the individuation, exposition, and explanation of the Christian view on God with its Christological and Soteriological concepts.
Moreover, the lecture will feature the Chinese face of the pastoral and missionary enterprise carried out by the members of the “luminous teaching” community highlighting its efforts of ‘understanding’, ‘translating’, ‘explaining’, and ‘transmitting’ the story of Jesus into Chinese categories. The model of inculturation developed by these early missionaries in China is the first invaluable approach and will remain a reference for Christian and missionaries in the Chinese context they should always learn from.

ABOUT THE TALK:
Asia is home to a huge diversity of whales, dolphins and porpoises and even the only vegetarian marine mammal in the eastern hemisphere! Right on Macau's very doorstep, two species of cetacean call the waters of the Pearl River Estuary home and a further 17 species have been recorded in close by oceanic waters. The region has a rich history of marine mammals and many Tin Hau temples display ancient whale bones, as a testament to the importance these species once had with fishing communities. Both dolphins and porpoise have been struggling in the ever more urbanized waters of the estuary, however, the cessation of the ferry traffic during Covid border closures has provided some respite and has seen the return of dolphins and porpoises to now deserted shipping lanes. Our speaker, Dr Lindsay Porter, will describe her decades long study of our local marine mammals and will provide the first insights to how dolphins and porpoises claimed back their habitat during this period of restricted vessel movement.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Lindsay Porter obtained her undergraduate degree in Aquatic Bioscience from Glasgow University (Scotland) then moved to Hong Kong to conduct her doctoral thesis on the impact of coastal reclamation on the iconic Chinese white dolphin – or Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis). Lindsay completed her PhD in 1998 and remained in Asia where she has studied many of the most threatened regions regarding marine mammal species. Lindsay is currently an Honorary Research Fellow of the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) of the University of St. Andrews (Scotland), the world’s largest research and teaching facility dedicated to the study of marine mammals. She continues to use Hong Kong as her base where her study of the Chinese white dolphin population now spans more than 20 years. Lindsay is also an Associate Professor at the University of Malaysia Sarawak and University Sains Malaysia, where she is assisting local researchers to develop skills and increase marine mammal expertise in the Malaysia. Lindsay is recognized as an international marine mammal expert and is a member of the IUCN Cetacean Specialist Group and Chair of the Small Cetacean Committee of the International Whaling Commission Scientific Committee. She also sits on the boards of two regional groups, the South East Asian Marine Mammal association (SEAMMAMs) and the Asian Marine Mammal Stranding Network (AMMSN). Lindsay is also the Asia Section Marine Liaison Officer for the Society of Conservation Biology, board member of the Association of Tropical Biology Conservation and the Awards and Scholarship Chair for the Society of Marine Mammalogy. Lindsay has also provided expert advice, as well as featured in, several documentaries on ocean health and marine mammals, in particular the award winning documentary “A Plastic Ocean” highlighted her work on Sri Lanka's blue whales.

About the talk:
How we detect and process sound is a fundamental question in auditory research. Quantification of hearing abilities is the technical basis for answering this question. In this talk, I will first present the anatomy of the mammalian ear, followed by the optical measurement of the mechanical vibration on the middle and inner ear, and common methods such as Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) used to quantify auditory sensitivity in humans and lab animals. I will present ABR results on disease models (exposed to noise, drug and gene modifications). For other research organisms such as the small larval zebrafish and drosophila, alternative psychoacoustic approaches such as the pre-pulse inhibition will be presented and discussed.
About the speaker:
Fangyi CHEN obtained his Bachelor and Master degrees in the field of Biomedical Engineering from Tsinghua University (Beijing, China). He received his PhD in Electricaland Computer Engineering from The University of Boston (2005). He worked as a Research Associate and Research Engineer in the Oregon Hearing Research Centre from 2005 to 2012. In 2012, Dr. CHEN joined Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech, Shenzhen, China) as an Associate Professor and became the vice president of the Zhiren College and the Executive Dean of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. His research focuses on the development of the instruments in otolaryngology, in vivo study of the cochlear mechanics, and functional assessment of the hearing and vestibular systems in animal models.
