Laboratory of Applied Neurosciences (LAN/USJ) is an applied research lab at the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL) that addresses emerging topics in the intersection of neurosciences, marketing, business and other related areas, such as stress, learning, and professional development.

The USJ Laboratory of Applied Neurosciences (LAN), located at the University of Saint Joseph, Ilha Verde Campus, and housed in the Faculty of Business and Law, was officially inaugurated on February 28, 2023. The opening ceremony was officiated by the Rector of USJ, Prof. Stephen Morgan, and Mr. Carlos Roberto Xavier, Director of the Department of Tertiary Education of DSEDJ.

The event was marked with the presentations of the Laboratory by Prof. Alexandre Lobo, Head of LAN, and the current research conducted by its doctoral and master students, followed by an unveiling ceremony and a guided laboratory tour.

During the event, Prof. Jenny Lao Phillips, Dean of the USJ Faculty of Business and Law, also remarked that USJ is designing a Postgraduate Diploma in Neuromarketing that will become available in the upcoming 2023/24 academic year, taught in an online format and targeting professionals worldwide.

LAN aims to create a multimodal technological infrastructure to support USJ’s cross-disciplinary postgraduate and undergraduate research projects that address emerging topics in the intersection of neurosciences, marketing, business, and other related areas such as stress, learning, and professional development.

The Laboratory began its research field in 2015 with its first neuromarketing project monitoring subjects’ reactions towards Macao’s and the Greater Bay Area’s tourism advertisements. Since then, with funding from the Macau Foundation and the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), it has acquired additional hardware and software for further scientific research.

Presently, USJ/LAN has joint projects with partner universities and institutions in China, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and the United States of America.

LAN also offers team-building programmes for local organisations and companies, and it looks forward to the possibility of conducting market research or advertisement testing for external local public and private entities.
