On the morning of October 16, a delegation of the new senior management team of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), led by the 4th Rector, Reverend Professor Stephen Morgan, visited the Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR, with the aim to greet and present the future development plans of the USJ in Macao. The new team was warmly welcomed and congratulated by the Deputy Commissioner, Wang Dong.
Rev. Professor Stephen Morgan thanked the Deputy Commissioner and the Ministry for their warm welcome and continuous support for USJ. He introduced the objectives of the future development plans of the University and stated that “USJ is in, of and for Macao, China”. USJ is one of the most comprehensive higher education institutions in Macao, which provides all academic degree programmes including Bachelor, Master and PHD.
Since its 24 years of establishment, USJ has cultivated "the talents of over 7,500 students" in different fields, and has played a unique and important role in serving and promoting social harmony in the Macao society. With its unique internationalised culture, the University will continue its role as a platform to serve between the “Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries” and the “One Belt, One Road” Initiative, and supporting the initiatives of Macao SAR Government along with the development of the Greater Bay Area.
USJ will uphold the highest academic standards, to promote the identity and ethos of USJ, to foster social development rooted in the traditions of Macao, to promote internationalisation as a core value proposition, to nurture the commitment to a sustainable society, and become a significant East and West cultural exchanging platform.
Deputy Commissioner, Wang Dong, thanked the Rector, Rev. Professor Stephen Morgan for his introduction and was highly appreciated for his concept of “USJ is in, of and for Macao, China”.
After introducing the mission and functions of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of People’s Republic of China at the Macao SAR, the Deputy Commissioner said that as an higher education institution with a 24-year history serving in Macao, its unique characteristics of the internationalisation, multi-cultural educational background and the integration of Chinese and Western cultures, can help promoting and positioning Macao as a “centre, platform base for its long-term development”. For this, the Commissioner’s Office will actively support it.
The Commissioner Wang also pointed out that the central government is very conscious regarding the youth development of Macao, hence, it will assist the University in fostering young students to have deeper understanding of the Chinese culture and diplomatic characteristics in the new era, and is very supportive to the USJ’s foreign academic exchanges.
Finally, the Deputy Commissioner, wished that under the leadership of the new Rector and management, USJ will continue to develop its distinctive characteristics and cultivate more professional talents to “Love China, Love Macao” and act as a strong communication bridge between China and the West.
Among the team were the three Vice Rectors of USJ, Professor Keith Morrison, Professor Álvaro Barbosa and Professor Shu Guang Zhang, Dean of Faculty of Business and Law, Professor Jenny Lao-Philips and Head of the Department of Languages and Culture, Prof. Lidia Zhou.

On October 12th and 13th, 2020, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), represented by the Director of the Public and International Relations Office (PIRO), Mrs. Paula Mota, and PIRO International Relations Officer, Miss Joana Costa, attended a two-day webinar on internationalisation and risk. The Online Internationalisation Forum “Catholic Universities without Borders - Internationalisation and Risk” was organised by the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU) in collaboration with the Australian Catholic University (ACU) and with the support of ALÉAS, the Canadian leader in international mobility risk management.
After a warm welcome by Professor Zlatko Skrbis, the soon-to-be ACU Vice-Chancellor and President (from January 2021), sessions were facilitated on extremely relevant topics given the current scenario the world is facing such as “Globalisation and Higher Education in the Post-Coronavirus Era: What Impact on Internationalisation?”, “Governance and Risk Management in Higher Education: How to Create and Manage a Crisis Unit?”, and “Will COVID-19 End Internationalisation as We Know It? An Assessment”. Speakers included:
During the event, IFCU’s Nicolas Vergier presented the IFCU collaborative platform “World Catholic Universities” as an opportunity for post-COVID internationalisation. The platform serves as a collaborative space for its members, where partnerships may be nurtured and developed and where members will have privileged access to the latest trends and news.
The insightful event concluded with a discussion on the creation of a risk management framework especially tailored for Catholic Universities. IFCU, USJ and remaining Federation members will work closely together towards the creation of said framework.

string(2918) "Covid-19 impacts our life and world dramatically. Scientists claim, that this situation might have been caused – among other factors – by a wrong treatment of nature by humans. Did nature put its brakes on to correct human behavior? Can we humans discover in nature how to act correctly? Does nature help us to get to know what to do? Philosophically speaking, should actions follow our being (agere sequitur esse), and is ethics fundamentally hooked up with reality and ontology? (bonum et verum convertuntur). Does the “ought” follow from the “is”, and should human life and societies comply with how things are?
After overcoming the mechanistic reductionism of the “natural fallacy”, which denies “value judgments” originating from “is” or facts, this Lecture Series attempts to trace back question of “natural goodness” (Philippa Foot), morals and good actions “in accord with reason” (S. Thomas Aquinas, S.Th. I-II.21.1.; ST I-II, 90.1). The philosophical and catholic tradition calls this the morality of the “natural law”. The lectures shed light on development and relevance of Natural Law from different philosophical and theological angles.
About the Talk
The lecture is entitled, “Natural Law: Essential and Relevant”. Being the opening lecturer, the speaker will present a panoramic view of the traditional natural law theory or concept and explore new approaches or applications of natural law today. His talk will develop three main points: first, some preliminary notes; second, natural law in moral theology, and third, three current consequences from the natural law continuing tradition, namely, human rights, virtue ethics and the Golden Rule.
About the Speaker
The lecturer is Fausto Gomez Berlana OP, Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy of the University of Saint Joseph (Macau), and Professor of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Santo Tomas (Manila). Professor Gomez will open the Series of Lectures on Natural Law (2020-2021).

On the afternoon of October 8, 2020 (Thursday), The Science and Technology Development Fund Committee (FDCT) Administrative Committee visited the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and was welcomed by the Rector, Rev. Professor Stephen Morgan with the senior management team of USJ. Among the delegation were the President of Administrative Committee, Mr. Chan Wan Hei Samuel, Members of Administrative Committee, Mr. Dominic K.L. Ip and Mr. Paulo Cheang Kun Wai, Chief of S&T Development and Research Department, Mr. Sky K.O. Chan, and Senior Technician of Financial Support Department, Mr. Joe T.F. Tang.
Mr. Chan mentioned that the Macao SAR Government is particularly committed and supportive towards local science and technology development and knowledge transformation. He pointed on the Chief Executive’s objectives on science and technology development policies, that research projects should provide practical achievements and contributions to local economic diversification and social development. Higher Educational Institutions should aim to conduct productive and functional research findings that generate benefits to the society. Therefore, the new direction on research funding will focus more on scientific transformation research and applied science and technology.
Rector, Rev. Professor Stephen Morgan introduced the Ilha Verde Campus of USJ to the delegation as “a sustainable and a green campus designed by students and for the students”. As a local “green campus”, USJ aims to contribute towards a sustainable development of Macao by providing scientific approaches and cultivating professional talents. Like the recent conducted research on Macao’s Mangroves and Maritime projects sponsored by FDCT, USJ will continue to coordinating research on environmental science, architect and service design projects to facilitate the policies and implementations in Macao’s sustainable development. As a local higher educational institute and rooted in its traditions, USJ will uphold the institutional accountability in providing Macao a sustainable society.
A campus tour led by Rev. Professor Stephen Morgan and the management team concluded the visit in the afternoon in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

On September 24 and 25 (Thursday and Friday), the USJ Student Association held the first "USJ Uniform Day" on the campus of the University of Saint Joseph. The purpose of this event is to enhance everyone's sense of belonging towards USJ and teamwork.
The activities included maltose produced on-site and instant photo service booths. Students and staff of USJ also signed and left messages on the scenery board specially prepared for the event. In order to allow more participants, the event was held for two days. At the same time, the USJ Student Association also organised educational and healthy board games for students from 18:00 to20:30 in the evening of the event, including UNO and Wolf Killers.
The student responded enthusiastically. The successful conclusion of the activity depends on the active participation and support of all professors, students and staff of the USJ. The Student Association hopes to make persistent efforts next year to turn the activity into a classic culture of the USJ.

About the talk
Among the many and diverse ecosystem services of mangroves, coastal protection and carbon sequestration place them in the forefront of Climate Change adaptation and mitigation. With high rates of mangrove loss, mainly due to brackishwater culture pond conversion, the Philippines has a decades-long history of mangrove rehabilitation.
Massive external funding, a limited coastal (fringe) planting area and contentious tenure issues of aquaculture ponds – has influenced the way mangrove protocols evolved. Success indicators of national and international development programs emphasize quotas (e.g., number of hectares and mangroves to be planted) rather than mangrove survival. Hence the concern was how to complete planting in the targeted area using up the allocated budget within the prescribed period of time. Such considerations have led to the present default mode of planting Rhizophora on seagrass beds (or mudflats) – the wrong species in the wrong sites.
This public lecture talks how mangrove rehabilitation and conservation should be science-based and not quota- or budget-driven and recommends new policies towards mangrove rehabilitation programs in the Philippines.
About the speaker
Dr. Jurgenne Primavera has Zoology and Marine Science degrees from the University of the Philippines and Indiana University. She taught at the Mindanao State University but a rebellion forced her family to flee to the safety of Iloilo, central Philippines and a job with the SEAFDEC Aquaculture Department. In the 1980s, she rang warning bells on the perils of unplanned aquaculture. Her research shifted to the mangrove-penaeid shrimp connection for which she was conferred a PhD in Science honoris causa by Stockholm University. She has written numerous scientific papers, reviews, manuals, books and other publications on aquaculture, fisheries, and mangroves including Handbook of Mangroves in the Philippines – Panay in 2004 and Beach Forests and Mangrove Associates in the Philippines. She has been named Scientist Emerita of SEAFDEC AQD, 2008 TIME Magazine Hero of the Environment, University of the Philippines Distinguished Alumni in Environmental Conservation, and Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology. Presently she is Chief Mangrove Scientific Advisor of the Zoological Society of London.

On Friday, September 18 at 6:00 PM at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) the Department of Creative Industries of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH), in collaboration with the Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Center (CPTTM), presented the Fashion Show of the first graduate students from the Bachelor of Fashion Design. The event showcased the student's final graduation projects, centred on the theme "TRANSPARENCY".
The event was the culmination of the 2013’s agreement between the USJ and the CPTTM, to co-organise a unique four-year programme in Macau, the Bachelor of Fashion Design, aiming at discovering and fostering qualified local fashion designers. While the University teaches theoretical/practical classes, the Centre provides industry practical training to educate and encourage new blood to enter the fashion design industry.
The Fashion Show proposed six radical concepts for Macao's Fashion, showcasing the student's innovative collections. They brought together diverse projects in the areas of fashion design where their talents were nurtured through the aforementioned collaboration during the four-year Fashion Design programme. An in-depth academic and technical training structure was developed, where students gained appropriate fashion design and creative skills—aiming to boost their professional status and build their careers in the industry.
Each student's collection consisted of five garments, with a total of thirty garments being presented. Each collection was fashionably designed, showing their creativity and talent, using new technologies like Laser-cut and 3D Printing.
Students who participated in the Bachelor of Fashion Design Capstone Projects were Chan, Ka I (Katherine), Lou, Eva Nga I (Eva), Luana Vila Maior (Mona), André Francisco Mariano do Rosário (Éffina), Micaela Carolina Ali and Cheong, Chi Fong (Scofield), all supervised by Prof. Ana Cardoso.
The Department of Creative Industries of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities cordially invites you to review the student's fashion show event, here. #fashionUSJ / #fashionshowUSJ

The name of her collection is Completely Incomplete. The collection is inspired by a self-conversation that seeks a Poetic, Diverse and Dramatic self. Through the process of self-seeking, we can feel lost, and we may have difficulty to express and define ourselves. Others might label us even though we may not fit those labels, we are always changing, and that makes us completely incomplete. The style and looks of the collection are influenced by the Japanese Sengoku period, ancient Korean style, and the Xia style (Mandarin, Ancient Chinese Knight). Although the palette is mainly cold, using nude, grey and black colours, the color Red runs throughout the collection, bringing power and drama, showing timelessness, modernity, and sophistication.

Graduate Designer - Scofield Cheong
The name of the collection is the Slacker Generation. The words that define this collection are fun, lose and nevermind. This collection focuses on the song "smells like teen spirit" from Nirvana. This type of grunge music attracts a group of teenagers called the "Slacker Generation". The colour palette is the same colour used on the album cover of Nirvana’s “Nevermind” which includes white, red, orange, sky blue, and black. Inspiration arose from the album's cover, in the front, we see a baby swimming underwater following a dollar bill caught by a fish line, and on the back, it features a rubber monkey amongst eye-catching orange flame that is strongly contrasted with the baby under the water. The back cover colour shows aggressiveness, anger, frustration, and depression. An attitude seen in grunge music.

Graduate Designer - Éffina do Rosário
The name of the collection is Xpose. The collection reflects empowerment, the identity of oneself, and energy. The central concept of this collection is the exposure of parts of the body that are seldom celebrated or praised, to bring light to those features and to realise that we as Humans have to accept and Love our bodies, whether they be natural or unnatural. Each garment shows a gradual transformation and maturation, from inspiration gathered by individuals who are daring and eccentric to the realisation that oneself can achieve what they aspire to be. A dark-coloured palette represents the sleek, energetic journey of self-discovery, associated with mystery and power.

Graduate Designer - Micaela Ali
The name of the collection is Neo-Victorian an Aesthetic Movement. This collection focuses on Desire, Power, and Disposition. The central concept of this collection is to relive history by observing antique dresses and reaffirming femininity and elegance. Transparency in this collection is seen as timeless — someone is peering inside of each one of us — transparency is a symbol of elegance and power. The colour palette is a contrast between red and black colours, with laser-cut patterns that brings a chic and elegant look to the garments.

Graduate Designer - Katherine Chan
The name of the collection is Delusion. This collection is artistic, Sexy and Double-layered. The garments have an anaglyph 3D effect mixed with a double-layer translucent fabric in each piece. The inspirational idea arose from the 3D movie effects, and the innovative asset is bringing it to fabric. As a designer, it is essential to make an initial idea as real as possible. If the illusion of a designer goes in the wrong direction, it becomes a delusion. The impossible turned possible, a unique self-presentation, self-enhancement, and ambition, pushing designers to the limit so they can bring innovation to their collections. The dark colour palette is the foundation of this collection, and Black is the centre of it all. The anaglyph 3D effect, in Red and Blue tones, are the highlight of the collection, bringing the garments to life.

Graduate Designer - Mona Vila Maior
The name of the collection is Hangover. This spring and summer collection is Demure, Youthful, and Indolent. Today's youth wants to relax and have fun especially during the weekends. They constantly await the weekend to get drunk and get Hangover. The garments emphasize the weekend feeling on weekdays. This collection shows five garments, Monday to Friday to illustrate their weekly moods. The main colour of the palette is white, to show purity and cleanliness of the weekday feeling — hazy, casual and lazy; the dark colour is only used for embellishments.
