The University of Saint Joseph (USJ), in collaboration with The Salvation Army, organised a two-day clothing and goods donation event, under the USJ Environmental Action Programme, on the 26th and 27th of November 2020.
More than 10 full bags of donations were collected, these include clothing, books, handbags, small electrical appliances, stationery and toys. The donated goods will be sorted, distributed and sold in Family Stores in Macau. The net proceeds will then go to The Salvation Army for use across its invaluable community programmes. Some of the donations will be directly helping people in need.
The USJ hopes to encourage students, staff and the public to reduce waste, protect our environment, and to assist the vulnerable members of the community.

A group of students and staff visited VANNEX International Limited of Macau (科域國際有限公司), the operator of Macau's Computer & Telecommunication Equipment Recycling Programme in Taipa on the 20th of November, 2020. The visit was organised by the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Ph.D. Science Student Warren Man Ho Li and led by Mr. Pang Sum Chuen 彭森泉 from VANNEX. The visit was the second within a year to raise awareness and to build bridges between research and practice.
WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) is the fastest growing waste stream globally. Electronic Products, like batteries or lamps need to be disposed of properly, as they contain heavy metal which impacts human health and the environment negatively. Fluorescent Lamps contain metal, glass and toxic mercury, and thus require cautious transportation and proper recycling. Most parts of electronic products can be recycled to raw materials, for example, plastic, metals, etc. Relatively new models of electronic devices are sorted out for Repair and Reuse by VANNEX in view of donations to charities.
The Recycling and Reuse Programmes run by Vannex serve Macau's citizens, governmental departments, schools, hospitals and non-profitable institutes. Residents and institutions can drop-off their electronic products to mobile collection vehicles and fixed collection points. The Battery Recycling Programme set up about 900 collection points in Macau for drop-off end-life batteries.

Covid-19 impacts our life and world dramatically. Scientists claim, that this situation might have been caused – among other factors – by a wrong treatment of nature by humans. Did nature put its brakes on to correct human behavior? Can we humans discover in nature how to act correctly? Does nature help us to get to know what to do? Philosophically speaking, should actions follow our being (agere sequitur esse), and is ethics fundamentally hooked up with reality and ontology? (bonum et verum convertuntur). Does the “ought” follow from the “is”, and should human life and societies comply with how things are?
After overcoming the mechanistic reductionism of the “natural fallacy”, which denies “value judgments” originating from “is” or facts, this Lecture Series attempts to trace back question of “natural goodness” (Philippa Foot), morals and good actions “in accord with reason” (S. Thomas Aquinas, S.Th. I-II.21.1.; ST I-II, 90.1). The philosophical and catholic tradition calls this the morality of the “natural law”. The lectures shed light on development and relevance of Natural Law from different philosophical and theological angles.
About the Talk & Speaker:
Prof. Chin Hei (Andrew) LEONG; Ph.D in Theology (Biblical Studies, Old Testament) / Sacrae Theologiae Doctor, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
Since the time of the Church Fathers, the Decalogue (Ten Commandments) has been seen as the privileged expression of the Natural Law (see: CCC 2070). This lecture will review the adoption of the Decalogue in Catholic theological ethics, explore its significance, and critically evaluate the challenges it poses.

On the 25th and 26th Nov 2020, five USJ students, namely António Ambrose (BBA Year 1), Linda Ermelinda Nazaré António De Almeida (BBA Year 3), Enoch Kuok Chon Kit (BBA Year 2), Ahniya Vashchuk (BSWP Year 3) and Eva Ieong Lin Fa (MSW Year 2) participated the Virtual Social Business Students Forum (SBSF), organised by the Daffodil International University. The theme of this student forum was “Bridging Young Minds; Zeroing Poverty, Unemployment, and Net Carbon Emissions”. Besides gaining the precious learning experience and global networking opportunities, the participants also had an exclusive chance to meet Nobel Laureate, Prof. Muhammad Yunus, who is also known as Father of Social Business & Microcredit.
We have received positive feedback from student participants:
“The youth plenary helped me think in new ideas and solutions, and the keynote speech from Professor Muhammad Yunus made me realise that we should always put the well being of our society first in the process of creating a business. We, as future leaders, have the power to make the world a fair place for everyone.” - Ermelinda
“I would say that SBSF is an amazing opportunity to create a network for youth to solve social problems, explore the ideas for Social Business, and get to know more leaders around the world. It is such a priceless opportunity to learn from people who are experienced (keynote speakers), who achieved success in Social Business and who are willing to share it with students.” - Ahniya

On the afternoon of 24th of November 2020, a delegation from the Hunan Normal University (HNNU), China, visited the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) with the aim of promoting and strengthening partnership between the two institutions. Vice Rector of USJ, Prof. Zhang Shuguang; Dean of Faculty of Business and Law, Prof. Jenny Lao Phillips; and Head of the Department of Languages and Culture, Prof. Lídia Zhou; warmly welcomed the delegation.
During the campus tour, the delegation visited the Audio-Visual Production Studio, Design Studio, Architectural Studio, Digital Fabrication Lab, Library and Residential Hall, being particularly intrigued by the 3D Printing equipment, pointing that USJ is “small in scale, but internationalised and exquisite”.
In 2019, a MOU was signed between the two institutions to strengthen collaborations in different fields such as developing Portuguese Language exchange programme. Macao has long been a significant platform for cultural exchange between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries and with such rich experience in Portuguese language teaching, it could prove an opportunity for HNNU to develop such programme with USJ.
During the meeting, both institutions expressed their intention to cooperate and reached a consensus that exchange programmes for students and academics in the fields of Design, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development and International Tourism will gradually be introduced.
USJ Vice Rector also stated that Macao; being the “super contact” for exchanges between China and the rest of the world, especially Portuguese-speaking countries; providing internationalised talents for the Greater Bay Area, is one of the most highly valued higher education policies of the Macao SAR Government. USJ has a distinctive multicultural learning environment, thus educational partnership will further enrich students learning experience.
Among the HNNU delegation were Chen Yujiang, Director of Taiwan, HK and Macau Affair Office of HNNU; Jiang Lihua, Deputy Director of Taiwan, HK and Macau Affair Office of HNNU; Wang Zhaofeng, Dean of the School of Tourism; Dai Jianhua, Dean of the School of Information and Engineering; Jiang Li Hua, Assistant to the Dean, College of Foreign Language Studies; and He Caiyun, Professor of Medicine School.

About the Talk:
The talk will focus on water-related issues such as increasing population, poverty, and climate change. Will these exacerbate existing water problems and create new ones? Will we have enough water in the future? Will we meet the UN SDG6 goals? How will our rivers and lakes look like in terms of pollution, biodiversity, and landscape? Which technical, economic, and institutional solutions do we have? Are they available and affordable? What can stakeholders and decision-makers do about it? What can each of us do about it right now? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this presentation.
About the Speaker:
Prof. Joaquim Pocas Martins is a professor and Director of the Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment Section of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto. He is also the current Secretary-General of the National Water Council of Portugal and president of Ordem dos Engenheiros - Northern Region of Portugal. He held various important positions in the past - as a consultant to the World Bank, NATO, and the European Commission; CEO of water utilities serving up to 8 million people (1997-2013) and secretary of State for the Environment of Portugal (1993-95). With a degree in Civil Engineering (University of Porto) and Public Health Engineering (University of Newcastle), he authored over 100 technical and scientific communications and currently leading a worldwide report on the contribution of engineers to SDG6. Prof. Martins has over 40 years’ experience in the water sector, including lecturing and research, consultancy, management of water utilities, political responsibilities at government and municipal levels.
