The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is collaborating with The Salvation Army to organise a Clothing and Goods donation event on the 26th and 27th of November 2020.
Donated goods are sorted, distributed and sold in Family Stores in Macau. The net proceeds will go to The Salvation Army for use across its invaluable community programmes. Some of the donated goods will be directly helping people in need.
This event aims to encourage the public to reduce waste, protect our environment, and to assist the vulnerable members of the community.
The third lecture of the public lecture series titled “A spotlight on what works in education” was successfully held on the 17th of November 2020. Students, alumni, academics and researchers from Macao and overseas attended face-to-face or online the series of Public Lectures, organised by the Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education (DLCRE).
The three public lectures, titled “Randomized controlled trials in educational research and practice”, “Replication studies in educational research and practice”, and “Getting research evidence in educational practice”, respectively, were delivered by Professor Keith Morrison and moderated by Professor Ana Correia, the Director of the DLCRE.
Professor Keith Morrison is the author of 18 books and the Co-editor of the international peer-reviewed journal Educational Research and Evaluation. He has published more than 15 book chapters, and is well published in peer reviewed academic journals and other educational publications.
Among his books are Research Methods in Education, currently in its 8th edition, Causation in Educational Research; Managing Complex Change in School; School Leadership and Complexity Theory; Management Theories for Educational Change; Implementing Cross-curricular Themes; and A Guide to Teaching Practice, with several editions. Taming randomized controlled trials in education, published by Routledge earlier this year, served as the basis for Professor Keith Morrison Public Lectures.
The DLCRE was created in the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) in 2019. The Centre seeks to promote and sustain the development of research in education, to link research and educational practice, policy making, decision making and action, to disseminate the results of research through a range of channels, and to be a resource for educational research findings and their dissemination.

Twelve students of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) competed in the 3rd "Macao Universities KOM E-sports Games" on the 12th of November 2020.
Organised by the Macao China Electronic Sports Union Federation, this event aims to create a platform to cultivate local e-sports talents, promoting education through competitions and promoting the diversified development of the industry in Macao. The e-sports industry has grew rapidly in recent years and a variety of online pan-entertainment companies have emerged, thus the market's desire for talent has expanded.
The theme of this year’s Games is "Stay! We Can Win!", including three e-sports events: "King Glory", "CS:GO", and "PES", plus three non-e-sports events "micro-video creative competition" and "inter-school talent "Competition" and "Friends of Werewolf". USJ students participated in three of these competitions: "King Glory", "CS:GO" and "Friends of Werewolf".
The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) received an “Excellence Award” for outstanding performance at the "Galaxy Entertainment Group Macau Cup – The 12th Youth National Knowledge Competition” finals on the 12th of November 2020.
The theme of this year's competition was “Healthy China – National Strategy", aimed to raise awareness and enable the local youth to understand the importance of the "Healthy China" vision and national development strategy.
The three students who participated in the competition on behalf of USJ, include: Yan, Pang Wing Yan (BED Year 1); Wanda, Chan Cheng Wai (BCM Year 1) and Da Rosa Lao Claudia (BED Year 1).
A series of field trips to the local wetland ecosystems were organised by the Institute of Science and Environment of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) in the months of October to November this year, with the aim to promote the value of freshwater and brackish/marine ecosystems to the community. These trips are part of a science promotion/community outreach program which has been regularly organised by the institute since 2013. Participants are brought to the local freshwater and brackish/marine wetlands to observe the aquatic plants and animals as well as experience hands-on measurements of the physico-chemical to assess water quality conditions in the area/sites.
The trips are complemented by educational talks and lectures for local school students about the local wetlands - what they are, where they are located in Macao, why they are important (for water filtration, fisheries, biodiversity, coastal protection, etc.), and why is there a need for their conservation and protection.
Thousands of students, teachers, and other members of the local community have joined these activities since 2013, with around 600 participants this year. Participants expressed enthusiasm and interest through their positive feedback after the activities. Pre and post-activity evaluation also revealed that the activities are effective in increasing the knowledge of participants about environmental issues, which hopefully, will translate into concrete action.
ISE/USJ is committed to continuing this effort to promote the conservation and sustainable use of aquatic ecosystems.

A group of USJ students and professors participated in the Sands China’s Sustainability Tour at the Venetian in Cotai, last November 13, 2020.
This visit is part of an annual activity organised for the Life and Science module since 2015, intended for students to learn and witness first-hand how the local tourism industries achieve sustainability in their facilities. The visit started with a presentation about the Sands Eco-360 program and how it achieves the SDGs, especially on issues related to energy, water, and waste. This was followed by a site tour that gave participants a glimpse of the various sustainable practices being implemented: installation of LED and other energy-efficient lights, optimisation of cooling and heating systems, water-efficient systems, facilities for waste/plastic/paper recycling, and food waste compactors.
The tour ended with a visit to the hanging sculpture by local artist Eloi Scarva. The artwork, titled “Project Hive”, made from 10,000 repurposed plastic cups collected from the Venetian Macao, visibly reflects the vast amount of plastic waste generated from the use of plastic water bottles.
This annual event is open for all students enrolled in the Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy (MCP) and the Master of Organisational Psychology (MOP), and Professors of the Department of Psychology (DP). Alumni, other members of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Education (FSSE) or anyone interested in themes related to psychological science are also welcome. The main purpose of this Forum is for the year 2 MCP/MOP master students to present and share their research projects to year 1 MCP/MOP master students. The forum is an opportunity for students to practice their communication skills and to interact and exchange ideas. This way, the former will have an opportunity to practice communication skills useful for their oral defense, and the latter will get ideas for their own research and how to organise their work. During the forum, the 2020 graduates will be awarded their internship certificates.
Programme:
Presentation of the MCP dissertation with highest grade in the last academic year: “The Influence of Culture on Psychological Help-Seeking Behavior: A Study with the Filipino Community in Macau” by Madalena Zancan.

Artworks from the University of Saint Joseph's (USJ) Department of Creative Industries graduated students, exhibited as part of the "Selected Works 2020" exhibition, aim to showcase the best projects from the bachelors of Architecture, Communication & Media, Design and Fashion Design of the academic year 2019-2020. The exhibition features a selection of five architecture projects, two of product design, three fashion collections, and five transmedia projects.
Graduates from the Bachelor of Architecture developed innovative green architecture concepts for the Ilha Verde neighbourhood. Working under the theme “Green Link”, identifying the districts' problems and opportunities and reimagined its urban fabric with a new conceptual masterplan and innovative architectures that explores a greener lifestyle, promoting social equity and environmental health. The selected individual projects materialize the key ideas of the masterplan and showcase the originality of each graduate, following a diverse range of programs from a Library, to a Mixed-use building and a Community Center, creating innovative new prototypes for a greener Macau.
Communication and Media graduated students learned how to express their feelings, opinions and ideas through different mediums and channels, using different styles and types of media, applying critical thinking to the messages being portrayed, and using techniques and aesthetic values which are represented through the selected works at the exhibition. Furthermore, our bachelor of Communication & Media students know how to efficiently put into practice the most advanced tools in digital production, according to professional, real-world production practice.
The focus of the Bachelor of Communication & Media students works is to bring the imagined to life, exploring many different topics ranging from reimagining the landscapes of Macau to childhood nostalgia. All through different, creatively diverse mediums such as the capture of life through photography, through graphic design and many more. The photography displayed in the exhibition showcases student's creative and technical skills, offering a different perspective on what we see daily. "Imagination is key to a creative mind. It leads us to new worlds, to the outside of the box, to make the impossible and the unusual." The challenge for our Communication and Media graduation students was to find a way through various media to share a message that was relevant to each one of them.
Under the theme "Duality", students of the bachelor of design focused their final graduation project explicitly on consistent and innovative design products. Students were challenged to think creatively, imagining what-if scenarios, reinventing existing products, and sustainably creating new ones. This year's project centred on product design and furniture design; the first one focused on updating the recycling system stations in Macau, giving them not only a more attractive look with touch-free apertures but also a more robust design so that the local community can easily identify them as sustainable recycling stations; the latter focused on origami-style furnishings with a trendy, clean and sturdy-feeling to be used in modern botanic-style home design.
The students of bachelor of fashion design proposed three radical concepts for Macau's Fashion, with the theme "Transparency", showcasing stylish and innovative collections. The graduates brought together diverse projects in the areas of fashion design where their talents were taken to the extreme, always taking into account their styles. Each student's collection consists of five garments, with a total of thirty garments being created. Of these thirty outfits, fifteen will be showcased showing their creativity, talent and strategy for Macau's new fashion outlooks. The students' collections also had in consideration the manipulation of modern materials and fabrics resorting to the use of new technologies like Laser-cut and 3D printing.
