About the Talk

It is often reported that high-ability students may experience obstacles and challenges along the way to choosing their career path. They can be helped tremendously in schools and colleges by planned programmes of learning experiences that lead them to understand fully the world of work, identify their own potential talents and interests, and develop transferable and adaptive skills that can make full use of their talents in a future career.

Effective practices in talent development, career education, and individual life planning need to be based on sound research evidence of what works best, and facilitated by appropriately trained teachers and other career professionals. However, in many countries, talent development and career education for high-ability students occupies only a marginal place in school curricula. Given the importance of this topic for the individuals and for society, it needs to receive much greater emphasis. This lecture introduces the concepts and research evidence related to career and talent development. Cases will be described that illustrate the challenges and opportunities that exist for high-ability students in schools and colleges; and effective support strategies that can be used by teachers and parents will be explored. The lecture will conclude with a synthesis of key points from the lecture and discussion.
