The book sheds a fresh light on how rapid digital advances are reshaping cultural identities and creative practices in all nine Portuguese-speaking territories – Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Macau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste.
A new bilingual academic book exploring the intersections of media, art, and technology across the nine Portuguese-speaking territories has been published by the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao. Titled “Media, Art & Technology in the Nine Portuguese-Speaking Cultures” in the English edition and “Media, Arte & Tecnologia nas Nove Culturas de Língua Portuguesa” in the Portuguese edition, the book edited by Prof. José Manuel Simões sheds a fresh light on how rapid digital advances are reshaping cultural identities and creative practices in the Lusophone world.
Prof. Simões, a prolific researcher and advocate for intercultural dialogue, described the project as an effort to unite the nine quadrants that speak Portuguese through multidisciplinary lenses on media, arts, and technology – an area still under-explored in Lusophone studies.
This volume unites contributions from scholars in all nine Portuguese-speaking territories – Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Macau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste – through nine dedicated chapters. Each chapter examine contemporary topics including: the integration of artificial intelligence in higher education in Angola (Wilson Gomes Caldeira) and newsrooms in Cape Verde (Silvino Lopes Évora), the rise of crypto art and blockchain in Brazil’s digital scene featuring artist interviews (Daniel Filipe Farinha), efforts to preserve endangered linguistic and cultural identities in Guinea-Bissau (Morto Camará), philanthropy, Confucianism, media influence, and corporate social responsibility in Macau (Carmen Zita Monereo), immersive transmedia narratives for sustainable development in Mozambique focusing on filmmaker Yara Costa’s work (Vanessa Ribeiro-Rodrigues), chronologies, archaeologies, and symbolisms of electronic literature in Portugal with emphasis on digital preservation (Rui Torres and Fernanda Bonacho), digital media’s contribution to entrepreneurship, intercultural relations, and development in São Tomé and Príncipe (José Manuel Simões), and the media system as a lever for democratic participation, transparency, and civic engagement in Timor-Leste (Paulo Faustino and Rui Alexandre Novais).
The book is available in open-access digital format via the USJ Academic Press book catalog and in print through select retailers. A launch event is scheduled for 24 February 2026 at 18:30 in the Paulo Freire Amphitheater at the Escola Superior de Educação e Comunicação (ESEC), Penha campus, University of Algarve, Portugal. Previous presentations have taken place at Universidade Lusófona in Porto, Portugal, at Centro Científico e Cultural de Macau in Lisbon, Portugal, and Sede da Reserva da Biosfera in São Tomé e Príncipe.
USJ extends its congratulations to Prof. José Manuel Simões and all contributors on this milestone achievement, contributing to the innovative and cross-cultural research of the Lusophone world in the scope of arts, humanities.
