About the Talk
The intention of Hugo Dores’ presentation is to question the limits posed by traditional and widely popular perceptions on historical events, usually determined by simplistic or biased explanations of multi-layered and multi-directional historical processes, as was the case of the missionary presence in colonial contexts. Beyond these limits lay many of the challenges of studying this subject. Based in a research centered in the dynamic relations between imperial powers and missionary activities and goals in the so-called third Portuguese colonial empire, during the Scramble for Africa, this communication will focus three main aspects. Firstly, the research paths traced throughout an academic project, highlighting casual difficulties and ongoing discussions; secondly, the historiographical perspectives approached in the research, such as imperialism, transnationalism and internationalism; and finally, the centrality of archival sources in any historical study and its importance to tackle misconceptions in History.
About the Speaker
Hugo Gonçalves Dores (Lisbon, 1983). PhD in History (University of Lisbon), with the thesis “Uma Missão para o Império: política missionária e “novo imperialismo” (1885-1926)” (2014). A significant part of his PhD research was carried out in archives such as the Vatican Secret Archives (including the archives of the Secretariat of State and the Propaganda Fide), the Portuguese Arquivo Histórico-Diplomático and Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino, the Belgian Archives Diplomatiques and Archives Africaines, the National Archives (Kew, London) or the archive of the World Council of Churches (Geneva).
He was a visiting scholar at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium) and Brown University (United States). He is currently a researcher in the Centre of Religious History Studies – Catholic University of Portugal (2011)
He has been working on missions and empires (19th and 20th centuries), namely imperial policies towards missionary activities (both Catholic and Protestant) related to education and development, having published articles and book chapters on those topics. In 2015, he published his first book, A Missão da República. Política, Religião e o Império Colonial Português (1910-1926).
He is now developing his post-doctoral project - «‘Educating Empires’: International organizations, inter-imperial cooperation, and educational policies in late colonialism» - at the Center for Social Studies (CES-UC, Portugal).

On 17 March 2017, around 200 USJ students, staff, friends and relatives gathered in the beautifully decorated roof top garden of Nape 1 to celebrate "USJ International Cultural Fair 2017- Experience different cultures in USJ”. This event aimed at promoting cultural exchanges among the participants, broadening their perspectives and deepening their understanding of the diversified cultures in the world.
The event attracted numerous visitors from many other universities and local expat and ethnic minority communities. On behalf of the University, Prof Vincent Yang, Pro-Rector, welcomed all the participants and acknowledged the contribution of the teams of staff of OIR and OSA, the student society, professors and alumni. He thanked Bishop Stephen Lee and Rector Fr. Peter Stilwell for attending the event and the Macau Foundation for sponsoring it. Students and staff of 17 nationalities volunteered to serve various types of food which they had prepared in advance. A total of 9 performances were staged by student groups from different nations, with the support of professors, staff and volunteers. Everyone enjoyed the food, music and dance performances. Many of them took this opportunity to share their culture by wearing their country’s traditional costume during the event.
We thank Bishop Lee of Macau for his kind remarks on the internationalization and cultural diversity of the USJ community. Rector Fr. Peter Stilwell visited the student booths and talked to many students. We would also like to thank all the participants once again for their participation and contribution in this event. Their joint effort has made it a success.

About the Talk
Due to their location, estuaries and other key coastal water systems are loaded with significant number of contaminants. From diverse anthropogenic activities, creating a “toxic soup” for local biota, humans too can be contaminated. Due to agriculture and intensive land use, several million tons of fertilizers and pesticides are applied each year, polluting surface- and groundwater. In order to evaluate the impact of pesticides in aquatic systems, such as estuaries, a total of 56 pesticides were screened in different matrixes, with consideration to possible spatial and temporal fluctuations. As a biological matrix, the commercial species Scrobicularia plana was chosen.
The goal of this demonstration is to provide an overview of the results obtained for different Portuguese estuarine environments, with specific focus on presenting the used methodologies and data treatment to support future environmental studies.

About the Talk
The emergence of climate change and endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) as crucial societal challenges became priority topics in the last decades. Still, there is a flagrant knowledge gap in relating those 2 kinds of priority concerns. However, for global climate change, predicting the response of ecosystems and resources is problematic and is at a very early stage. Besides climate change, over the last 2 decades, considerable concern has been given to the environmental health risks posed by endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) that possibly upset animal hormonal systems. Also, despite EDCs have been widely studied worldwide, little attention has been paid to some specific steroid hormones, such as progestins and the risks they pose to aquatic organisms are largely unknown. In this talk we will explore a bit the combined effects of global change and progestins in different aquatic species.
About the Speaker
Patrícia Cardoso concluded her PhD in Biology in 2005 from the University of Coimbra (Portugal). Since then until March 2015 has worked at IMAR-CMA at the same university, developing her research in ecosystem ecology in estuarine/marine systems. In a straight collaboration with the University of York (UK) she specialized in long term studies on benthic communities in response to multiple stressors; biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In the last years has been interested in ecotoxicological studies, specifically the assessment of contaminants (e.g. mercury) effects on coastal systems, namely macrobenthic and planktonic communities. Since 2015, as Senior Researcher at CIIMAR (Portugal) her main scientific interests are related to the study of the combined effects of climate change and emergent contaminants on the structure and functioning of coastal ecosystems. She is author of more than 50 publications (> 1400 citations, h index = 19) in leading international journals in the area of Marine Ecology and Ecotoxicology. She is research advisor of several Ms and PhD students."

Four students of the Master in Community Development, namely Olivia Lam, Nelson António, Katrina Lok and Calvin Tam, accompanied by Professor Ray Choy, taking the Module ‘Power, Strategy and Social Change’ interviewed one of the Macau Legislative Assembly law makers and social service practitioners of Macau. As part of the classes, the visits were aimed at having a better understanding of the process of social and community change in Macau, and in particular comprehending the various power strategies adopted and recognizing the main characteristics of community activists and leaders.
On 14 January 2017, students had an interview with Mr. José Pereira Coutinho who is a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Macau SAR. Discussion topics included Macau’s power structure and his leadership strategy and style. Some of the Macau’s major current social issues were also discussed. Mr. Coutinho believes that Macau’s education system and youth generation have great potential for future improvement. He shared that Macau social values tend to be materialistic nowadays because of the increased importance of the gaming industry. In his point of view, for the sustainability of Macau’s development, the government has to diversify the economy. He also advised that the younger generation should raise their competitiveness and broaden their horizons.
On 20 January 2017, students visited the Holy House of Mercy Rehabilitation Centre for the Blind and had an interview with the center director, Ms. Janet Leung, and the coordinator, Mr. Eric Leong.
Eric, an individual with visual impairment, shared his experience of empowerment. Besides the administrative work at the center, he organizes training and public education workshops. He also teaches his fellow members to use IT tools, computer and smart phones to help them integrate to the society. During the interview, the students realized that he Eric is a graduate of USJ and is now pursuing a master degree in Counseling and Psychotherapy. During the conversation with Ms. Leung, the students learned that the center representatives are actively participating in the government consultation for transportation for people with disabilities and free access facilities.
Katrina, a student, shared that “Mr. Coutinho is very experienced in politics and he shared some aspects of his own strategies and working style.” She also said that “Eric showed us a positive attitude towards his life, what he needs is people to have deeper understanding of visual impairment rather than simply showing sympathy. People with visual impairment lack job opportunities and respective training to better integrate into the society.”
Professor Choy highlighted that “It is a good opportunity for students to have community visits and learn from community leaders. Students should have learned the kinds of power the law maker and the individual with visual impairment have. The aim of their strategies such as social and community actions, and public education is to give Macao people more power over their own lives and to make Macao a better society”.

About the Talk
Co-author of the books Hong Kong In-Between (MCCM / Park Books, 2015) and The People of Duckling Hill (Hong Kong Polytechnic University, 2015), Géraldine Borio will illustrate the journey of a Swiss architect researching and working on Asian in-between spaces.
The narrow back lanes of Hong Kong and leftover spaces under Bangkok’s expressways have been the entry points to understand the mechanisms of urban environments. Less regulated and less sterile than official public spaces, these edge public spaces – unplanned and appropriated by the inhabitants – function as important buffer zones across the city. By observing people’s interactions with these in-betweens, in both physical and metaphorical ways much can be learn from their strategies to overtake the harsh environment.
Through architecture, artistic and research projects, Géraldine Borio has been engaging city users to experience urban space differently, using constraints as a starting point for creativity.
About the Speaker
Géraldine Borio is a Swiss Registered Architect who graduated from the Swiss Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL / ETH). She is the co-founder of Parallel Lab (an architectural office and laboratory for urban research based in Hong Kong) and the founder of Bah! (a micro development infrastructure). She is currently teaching at the School of Design, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Prior to that, she has worked with various firms in Tokyo, Beijing, and Hong Kong and has taught architecture at the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her work has been exhibited at Vitra Museum; Rotterdam Architecture Biennale; St-Etienne Design Biennale; Beijing Design Week; Zurich University of the Arts and ICI Curatorial Hub, New York.
