A group of 6 Master and PhD students of the Institute of Science and Environment (ISE) of USJ, together with 6 CSR staff of Macau, visited the Eco-Park in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong on Monday 26th February 2018. The visit was organised by Prof. Franz Gassner and PhD Student Mr. Warren Man Ho Li. The first stop was Hong Kong’s first WEEE (Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment) e-scrap recycling facility, financed by the Hong Kong government (US$ 74 million) and developed and managed by Germany's ALBA Group, which will run the plant together with the collection system for 10 years. Located at Tuen Mun EcoPark, north of Hong Kong’s International Airport, the new WEEE facility can handle up to 30 000 tonnes of “Flatties”, “Tubies”, “Washies” and “Fridgies”. With its annual electronic scrap volumes of more than 70 000 tonnes equating to almost 22 kg per capita, Hong Kong is Asia's biggest e-scrap generator, encompassing computers, fridges, TV sets, mountains of rice cookers and discarded air-conditioners (Hong Kong installs annually 400.000 new air-conditioners). 80% of Hong Kong's electronic scrap is, at the moment, exported to developing countries while 20% is dumped in local landfills. The official opening of the e-scrap facility in Tun Mun will take place on St. Josephs Day, 19th March 2018 in the presence of CEO Ms. Carrie Lam.
The second stop of the student tour was the new Eco-Park Visitor Centre, a large-scale education resource centre on resource awareness, recycling, and municipal waste. The Centre informs schools and public about waste reduction (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) through 8 educational zones, including Waste Corridor, Movie Area, 3-D Landfill Model, 3Rs Zone, Reflection Pond, Group Game Zone, and Plastic Recycling Education Centre. The centre promotes environmental protection and visitors' understanding of municipal solid waste management, resource responsibility, and more sustainable life-styles. (Franz Gassner)

About the Talk
This new series of talks ‘In the Beginning was the Word - and they spoke in tongues’ will focus on ancient languages which became relevant to particular Christian communities in their historical and cultural development but are much less known than languages such as Latin or Greek. Some of these ancient languages actually became more than just liturgical languages, turning themselves into a trademark of some communities, as it is the case of Slavonic for some Eastern churches. Moreover, they function as a reminder that the diversity inside the Church goes back to its very foundation, as portrayed at the Cenacle by the image of the disciples speaking in different languages but understanding each other. Some of these ancient languages, such as Coptic or Slavonic, are still used today by their religious communities, whereas others, such as Gothic or Old-Nubian, are only known to us from leftovers of New Testament translations or other ancient Christian texts.
Ancient African Languages: Coptic, Ge’ez and Old Nubian
This session will look at Coptic, which is the language used by Christians in Egypt and the only remain of the ancient language of the pharaohs, and at Ge’ez or Classical Ethiopian, the official language of the Monophysite churches of Ethiopia and Eritrea. Ge’ez has been described as the Sanskrit of the Semitic languages. These languages and their communities managed to resist islamisation of the North of Africa and to this day keep up the fight for survival.
The ancient African Christian kingdoms of Makuria and Nobatia, in present day North Sudan, cannot claim to have had the same capacity of resistance and a few texts written in Old Nubian are all of what is all left from these old Christian communities.

ABOUT THE TALK
A will-to-design (will-to-order) and an understanding of architecture as a response to the reality are two primal forces or tendencies in thinking / doing architecture. While the conflict between these two forces is founder of architecture and its articulation allows to discuss and identify key aspects of contemporary architecture production. The Wittgenstein’s House is brilliantly inaugurated by Jan Turnovski as an example of the discussion. In this conference, Nuno Crespo talks about the discussion by highlighting its main aspects and contextualises it in Wittgenstein’s definition of architecture and how its philosophy and work as an architect allows to access the core issues of the relation between architecture and philosophy as well as ethics and aesthetics. Examples characterised by individual attitudes and exemplary cases are studied as well.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Prof. Nuno Crespo (b. Lisbon, 1975) studied philosophy and aesthetics at Lisbon New University, researching in the area of relations between art, philosophy and critisism. Currently teaches at School of Arts of the Portuguese Catholic University and is invited lecturer at Arts College of Coimbra University. Nuno is a curator of exhibition and now developing a major exhibition about the Portuguese director Pedro Costa for the Serralves Museum and another dedicated to the Austrian philosopher Wittgenstein for the MAAT museum in Lisbon. He has also been a senior art critic in the Portuguese newspaper Publico since 2003 and has some collaborations with the American magazine ArtPapers.

About the Talk
Ovarian folliculogenesis is one of the most dynamic physiological and developmental processes in vertebrates. Despite numerous studies on this issue in mammals, the molecular mechanisms that control follicle development, especially the early phase of folliculogenesis, still remain poorly understood. Gonadotropins are primary endocrine hormones that control ovarian development and function. In addition, various local paracrine and autocrine factors in the ovary also play important roles in this process. Although the endocrine and paracrine controls of folliculogenesis have been studied in fish, there has been a lack of genetic data on their functional importance, mostly due to unavailability of the gene knockout approach in fish models. Using zebrafish as the model and the emerging genome editing technologies, TALEN and CRISPR/Cas9, we have analyzed the roles of both endocrine hormones such as FSH and LH from the pituitary and local ovarian paracrine factors such as GDF9 in controlling folliculogenesis. Our data showed that follicle development in the zebrafish involves both external endocrine hormones and internal paracrine factors in the ovary.

The Orientation and Welcome Activities for International Exchange Students of USJ in the Second Semester of Academic Year 2017/2018 was held on 25th January 2018. It was co-organised by Academic Records Office (ARO), Central Services Office (CSO), Information Technology Office (ITO), Office of Student Affairs (OSA), and Office for International Relations and Regional Cooperation (OIR). USJ Buddies were also volunteered at this event to integrate with the new exchange students. Students are exchanging to USJ from various countries including Portugal and Brazil.
The exchange students were firstly greeted with an orientation, which provided them essential information of studying and living in USJ and Macao, as well as a basic Cantonese class. Followed by a tour to the heart of Macao, where they were able to walk into the market and experience the authentic culture. They were then served for lunch in a Chinese Restaurant, which offered them an opportunity to try the traditional dim sum and the "Yum Cha" culture. Students also experienced to take a bus back to USJ Green Campus.

About the Talk
Design Society has opened its doors in Shenzhen, only one hour from Macau. You can visit its galleries, shops and theatre. You can enjoy the roof garden, and experience design. But whatever the individual visitor’s destination, the promise of Design Society is to provide a platform for many to explore scenarios for design in China. More than a lecture, this can be a brainstorming session for future input from Macau.

About the Talk
Over the last decade proliferation of music making tools that are available to the widest demographics has been significantly changing the landscape of the recording industry. Every smart phone or tablet comes with numerous free applications that allow virtually anyone with no musical training to create quite interesting music. In order to make these applications commercially viable, software manufacturers had to design their tools by primarily manipulating the rhythmic structure of the music rather than the melodic structure. This shift from melody to rhythm has become evident in many popular musical styles. Now, quite understandably, it has gotten to the Hollywood film music as well. A musical theme in many Hollywood films is no longer a melody composed of notes. Instead, it is a feeling, a groove, a rhythm, which is related to the fact of wanting to appeal to a “younger” demographic. This audience would probably rather enjoy a groove than be “bothered” by a pesky melody. For that reason, the film audiences consider melodies to be old fashioned and dated, stale and a product of a bygone age. There is a perception that if a film score contains any memorable leit motive melody it will detract from the drama and come off as sounding like something from the old days. Perhaps the lack of strong melody in modern film scoring leaves us with an easy musical tool to exploit. It’s great to be puttering along in a cue that perhaps is a simple beat based groovy ostinato, and suddenly intensify the drama and surprise the audience with a melodic idea. I will show by concrete examples of presenting several film clips, how this change took place over the years, and how this new trend in film scoring has been established.
About the Speaker
Mladen Milicevic received a B.A. (1982) and an M.A. (1986) in music composition and multimedia arts studying at The Music Academy of Sarajevo, in his native Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1986 Mr. Milicevic came to the United States to study with Alvin Lucier at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, from which he received his masters in experimental music composition (1988). From the University of Miami in Florida, Mr. Milicevic received his doctorate in music composition in 1991, studying with Dennis Kam. For several summers he also studied with Michael Czajkowski at the Aspen Music School. He was awarded several music prizes for his compositions in the former Yugoslavia as well as in Europe. Working in former Yugoslavia as a freelance composer for ten years, he composed for theater, films, radio and television, also receiving several prizes for this body of work. Since he moved to the United States in 1986, Mr. Milicevic has performed his live electronic music, composed for modern dances, made several experimental animated films and videos, set up installations and video sculptures, had exhibitions of his paintings, and scored for films. His interests are interdisciplinary and he has made numerous presentations at various international conferences on a wide range of topics such as music, film, aesthetics, semiology, sociology, education, artificial intelligence, religion, and cultural studies. Bizarrely enough, he has scored film “The Room” which is now become an international phenomenon as the worst film ever made. Mr. Milicevic is Professor and Chair of Recording Arts Department at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles.
