Celebration of Chinese New Year 2025
23
Jan
Join the Department of Languages and Culture in celebrating Chinese New Year with activities for students and staff on 23 January, from 11:00 AM at the student Lounge.
Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important traditional holiday in China and is celebrated by millions of people around the world. It marks the beginning of the lunar new year, typically falling between late January and mid-February, and is deeply rooted in centuries of cultural customs and folklore. The holiday is a time for family reunions, honoring ancestors, and welcoming the arrival of a new year filled with hope and prosperity.
At the heart of the celebration is the belief in renewal—both of the spirit and of the world around us. The festivities are filled with vibrant colors, sounds, and symbols of good fortune. From the iconic dragon and lion dances to the lighting of fireworks, Chinese New Year is a time to dispel bad luck and usher in positive energy. The color red, which symbolizes happiness and good fortune, dominates decorations, clothing, and gifts during this time. The giving of red envelopes is a common tradition, especially for children, symbolizing good luck and blessings for the upcoming year.
With its rich blend of ancient customs, festive activities, and vibrant community spirit, Chinese New Year is not only a time to celebrate the passing of one year and the beginning of another, but also an opportunity to honor family, tradition, and the enduring hope for a prosperous future.
