The School of Education (SED) hosted a Seminar on Artificial Intelligence and Higher Education Governance by Professor Geoff Hayward, Emeritus Professor of Education and former Head of the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge.

The School of Education at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) hosted a Seminar on “Artificial Intelligence and Higher Education Governance” by Professor Geoff Hayward, Emeritus Professor of Education and former Head of the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge.

The Seminar, held on 25 March and moderated by Prof. Iris Mak, Programme Coordinator of the Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), drew enthusiastic participation from USJ students and faculty members, exploring the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence in higher education.

During the seminar, Professor Hayward examined how AI is challenging traditional assessment regimes and, by extension, the credibility of academic qualifications. He critically reviewed current institutional responses, including detection tools, redesigned tasks, and policy frameworks, highlighting their limitations, and proposed an alternative pathway centred on problem-based, inquiry-driven learning to foster authentic assessment and sustainable quality assurance.

The USJ School of Education would like to extend our sincere thanks to Professor Hayward and all participants for making the event a resounding success.
