USJ will carry out mosquito control work before the start of the new academic year on all campuses.

Dear Staff and Students,

Due to the rising risk of chikungunya and dengue fever in Macao, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) will carry out mosquito control work on all campuses before the start of the new academic year.

According to the Macao Health Bureau, the chikungunya and dengue fever diseases are transmitted through bites from infected Aedes albopictus mosquitoes and may cause the following symptoms:

  • Dengue Fever: High fever, headache, muscle/joint pain, rash; severe cases may involve bleeding or shock.
  • Chikungunya: Fever, rash, and severe joint pain (commonly affecting wrists, knees, ankles, and fingers).

To minimize the risk of infection, the Macao Health Bureau advises the following preventive measures:

  1. Eliminate stagnant water (mosquito breeding sites) in workplaces and residences.
  2. Use mosquito screens, nets, or air conditioning to prevent mosquito entry.
  3. Wear light-coloured, long-sleeved clothing outdoors and apply mosquito repellent.
  4. Seek immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms (fever, rash, joint pain) and inform the doctor of recent travel or residence history.

For inquiries, pleas contact the Health Bureau Hotline at 2870 0800 or visit the Health Bureau’s website.
