USJ World Youth Day delegation donates funds to Caritas Macau for earthquake survivors

USJ World Youth Day delegation donates funds raised from charity events to Caritas Macau to aid earthquake survivors of Turkey and Syria.

As a token of goodwill, representatives of the University of Saint Joseph’s (USJ) World Youth Day delegation visited Caritas Macau in the afternoon on May 18, 2023, to hand over the funds raised from the previous charity events held on the University campuses. The delegation was led by USJ Chaplain and Dean of the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy, Fr. Cyril Law.

The donation was given to Caritas Macau’s Executive Director, Mr. Paul Pun Chi Meng, and the funds will be used to aid the earthquake survivors of Turkey and Syria. Mr. Pun expressed his gratitude on behalf of Caritas Turkey and Caritas Syria, as well as the victims of both countries who will need the money for their new homes, communities, schools, and hospitals in a safer setting.

During the conversation at the Caritas headquarters, Mr. Pun shared some touching stories of how Macao locals tried their best to contribute to the relief effort financially. He reminded the World Youth Day delegates that the needy have hope and smiles of joy again because of our care for their concrete needs.

World Youth Day (WYD) is a worldwide encounter with the Pope celebrated about every three years in a different country. The most recent WYD was celebrated in Panama City, Panamá from January 22-27, 2019 and the next WYD will be held in Lisbon, Portugal in August 2023. This summer, eight (8) students and staff members from USJ will experience this journey of pilgrimage with around one million young people from all over the world.

The USJ WYD delegation’s donation to Caritas Macau is a testament to the organization’s commitment to helping those in need, even beyond their own community. The gesture is a teaching example of how small acts of kindness can make real difference in the lives of those who have faced hardship and tragedy.
