USJ Organises International Symposium on Open Innovation in Brazil

University of Saint Joseph, in partnership with Instituto da Primeira Infância (IPREDE), kicked off the “International Open Innovation Symposium” series in Brazil.



The University of Saint Joseph Macao (USJ), in partnership with Instituto da Primeira Infância (IPREDE), kicked off the International Open Innovation Symposium series in Brazil. A series of symposiums will be held in Portugal and Macao to explore the topic of open innovation.  The Brazilian edition of the symposium was sponsored by the Federation of Industries of the State of Ceará (FIEC) and Macao Foundation and was held in the City of Fortaleza-Ceará on August 25th 2023.

The symposium commenced with a presentation by USJ open innovation specialist, Emil Chi Hang Ip, the open innovation concepts embedded within the various National Economic and Social Development Plans of the People’s Republic of China since the 11th Five-Year Plan.  In addition, the important role of the Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao Greater Bay Area with focus on the innovation happening in Hengqin and Macao as an extension of the platform to serve the Portuguese- Speaking Countries. 

Participating in the debate were the Superintendent of SESI Ceará and the Regional Director of SENAI Ceará, Paulo André Holanda; the President of IPREDE, Sulivan Mota; the USJ Faculty of Business and Law Research Coordinator, Alexandre Lôbo; USJ Open Innovation Specialist Emil Chi Hang Ip; the Executive Secretary of Commerce, Service and Innovation of Ceará, Fábio Feijó; Professor at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), Ana Cristina Barros; the Director for the Public Sector of NEPEN Instituto, Adalberto Albuquerque; and the Director of FIEC and Financial Director of Foods Syndicates, André Siqueira.

Sulivan Mota, President of IPREDE, explains that the Institute, in partnership with foreign universities, such as University of Saint Joseph, has been working with the implementation of social technologies to improve the services provided in Ceará, which offers assistance to children and families in vulnerable situations Social.

The symposium explored the possibility of societal development and transformation in both economic and social terms with the use of National Economic and Social Development Plans of the People’s Republic of China as examples.  Concepts such as the “leapfrog” approach and “rural and urban harmonization” were met with great enthusiasm as poverty alleviation and economic development were also amongst the top priorities of the State government of Ceará.

With the presence of experts and representatives from industry, academia, government and the third sector, the meeting promoted exchanges of knowledge between Brazil and China on open innovation, a management model that encourages the development of innovative solutions within companies that are directed towards society and further the platform role of Macau through knowledge exchange and transfer between Brazil and China via the platform of University of Saint Joseph in Macao.
