USJ Awards 366 Diplomas and Degrees in its 2023 Graduation Ceremony

The University of Saint Joseph Macao (USJ) conferred 1 honorary degree, 9 doctoral degrees, 86 master’s degrees, 89 bachelor’s degrees and 181 post-graduate diplomas in education.



This year, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) held its Ceremony for the Conferral of Honorary and Higher Degrees and the Conferral of Undergraduate and Post-graduate diplomas on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at the Grand Hall of the Macau Tower. The Ceremony was divided into morning and afternoon sessions to accommodate the recipients of 366 degrees and diplomas and their witnesses. 

The morning session was officiated by the representative of the Honourable Chief Executive of the Macao SAR Government, Ms. Ao Ieong U, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, with the presence of distinguished guests, including representatives from the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in SAR, the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS), Diplomatic Corps accredited in Macao, Fellows from the Catholic Foundation for Higher Education, Honorary Guests, Higher Education Institutions in Macao, Donors of USJ, and local Associations.

Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Ms. Ao Ieong U, praised the University for fostering cultural and academic exchanges between China and the West. The government seeks to strengthen talent development and support higher education institutions in Macao. They encourage USJ to continue their internationalization efforts and nurture talented individuals with a love for their home and a global outlook.

During the Conferral of the Honorary Degree, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of USJ, Professor Carlos Sena Caires, awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters honoris causa to Professor Yang Huiling, a distinguished scholar in the fields of theological hermeneutics, religious studies, and comparative literature, who is currently a Professor in the College of Liberal Arts and former Vice President at the Renmin University of China.

The Rector of USJ, Rev’d Professor Stephen Morgan, also conferred nine doctoral degrees in the areas of Government Studies, History, Science, and Education and 86 master’s degrees during the morning sessions. The afternoon session featured the conferral of 89 bachelor’s degrees and 181 post-graduate diplomas in education.

In his speech to all graduands, Rector Morgan said, “When we set out on this journey together, my dear graduands, we wanted to look back at the end of your degree and know that you would graduate as people of the highest integrity, who could think rigorously, critically and creatively, work collaboratively, value engagement with people of other backgrounds, perspectives, beliefs, and cultures; men and women who had moved beyond mere proficiency to mastery of their discipline. Today you are those people, those men, those women and we are immensely proud of your achievement”.

Both ceremonies concluded with a series of speeches given by student representatives from different degrees featuring messages of gratitude, hope, appreciation, and encouragement directed to the guests, families, faculty members, and colleagues.

This year’s graduation ceremony was sponsored by the Macau Foundation.

A Universidade de São José atribuiu 366 Diplomas e Graus na Cerimónia de Graduação de 2023

A Universidade de São José (USJ) realizou a Cerimónia de Outorga de Graus de Diplomas no Sábado, dia 8 de julho de 2023, no Salão Principal da Torre de Macau. Este ano a Cerimónia foi conduzida em duas sessões distintas: uma na parte da manhã e outra na parte de tarde, de modo a acomodar 370 recém graduados e os seus convidados.

A sessão da manhã foi presidida pela Ao Ieong U, Secretária para os Assuntos Sociais e Cultura, com a presença de ilustres convidados, incluindo representantes do Gabinete de Ligação do Governo Popular Central na RAEM, da Direção dos Serviços de Educação e de Desenvolvimento da Juventude (DSEDJ), do Instituto de Acção Social (IAS), Corpos Diplomáticos acreditados em Macau, Membros da Fundação Católica para o Ensino Superior, Convidados Honorários, Instituições de Ensino Superior de Macau, doadores da USJ e Associações locais.

A Secretária para os Assuntos Sociais e Cultura, Ao Ieong U, elogiou a Universidade por promover o intercâmbio cultural e académico entre a China e o Ocidente. O governo procura reforçar o desenvolvimento de talentos e apoiar as instituições de ensino superior em Macau. O Governo também incentiva a USJ a prosseguir os seus esforços de internacionalização e a formar indivíduos talentosos com amor pela sua pátria e com uma visão global.

Durante a Outorga do Grau Honorário, o Decano da Faculdade de Artes e Humanidades, Professor Carlos Sena Caires, atribuiu o título de Doutor Honoris Causa ao Professor Yan Huiling – um distinto académico nas áreas da hermenêutica teológica, estudos religiosos e literatura comparada, e actualmente Professor na Faculdade de Artes Liberais e ex-vice presidente da Universidade Renmin da China.

O Reitor da USJ, Reverendo Professor Stephen Morgan, conferiu também nove graus de doutoramento nas áreas de Estudos Governamentais, História, Ciências, e Educação, e 86 graus de mestrado durante a sessão da manhã. Na sessão da tarde, foram conferidos 89 graus de licenciatura e 181 diplomas de pós-graduação em educação.

No discurso que dirigiu a todos os graduados, o Reitor Professor Morgan afirmou: “Quando iniciámos esta viagem juntos, meus caros graduados, tínhamos a intenção de olhar para trás no final do vosso curso e saber que se formariam como pessoas com o nível de integridade mais alto, capazes de pensar de forma rigorosa, crítica e criativa, de trabalhar em colaboração, de valorizar o envolvimento com pessoas de outras origens, perspectivas, crenças e culturas; homens e mulheres que tinham ultrapassado a mera proficiência para dominar a sua disciplina. Vocês são hoje esses indivíduos, homens e mulheres e estamos muito orgulhosos do vosso sucesso.”

Ambas as sessões terminaram com uma série de discursos proferidos por representantes dos estudantes dos diferentes cursos, com mensagens de gratidão, esperança, apreciação e encorajamento, dirigidas aos convidados, famílias, membros do corpo docente e colegas.

A cerimónia deste ano foi patrocinada pela Fundação Macau.
