Prof. Nuno Soares, Head of the Department of Architecture and Design at FAH, participated in the 18th edition of the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture held in Venice.
Prof. Nuno Soares, Head of the Department of Architecture and Design at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao, took part in the 18th edition of the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture held in Venice earlier in May. This year’s symposium, themed “Architecture is Construction,” recognised five architectural practices for their exceptional contributions to sustainable development and participatory design that meets societal needs.
Prof. Nuno Soares also participated in the Jury Meeting for the upcoming 2026 edition of the award, titled “Architecture is Transformation“, marking the award’s 20th anniversary. Winners for the 2026 award are expected to be announced in Spring 2026 during the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture Symposium.
Established in 2006 by architect and scholar Jana Revedin, the Global Award has gained widespread recognition as a platform for independent scientific exploration. It brings together a collaborative community of laureates dedicated to research and innovation in architectural and urban self-development projects. Supported in its last two editions by Saint-Gobain, the award has made significant strides in mapping the global design landscape, advancing environmentally responsible, resilient, and inclusive practices that utilize local resources.
The award’s relevance is highlighted by its history of recognising pioneering talents, many of whom, like Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu – guests of honour at the 2025 edition – went on to receive the prestigious Pritzker Prize later in their careers. The Global Award operates under UNESCO’s patronage and has been endorsed by the UIA – International Union of Architects since 2024.
