In the morning of the 17th of February 2025, Edna May G. Lazaro, the new Consul General of the Philippines in Macao, together with Vice Consul Regina Angeli P. Ambrocio-Carlos, Protocol Officer and Economic Assistant Shihnnie Jean R. Chan-Zarate, and Cultural Officer Emily Kristine C. Villanueva-Descallar, visited the University of Saint Joseph Macao (USJ) in its Ilha Verde Campus. Consul General Lazaro met with Professor Stephen Morgan, the Rector of USJ, who was joined by Dr. Teresa Loong, Vice-Rector for Student Life; and Mr. Ben John Bosco Lei, Head of Domestic Student Recruitment Office.
In the opening remark, USJ Rector expressed his very warm welcome to Consul General Lazaro’s arrival at both the Macao SAR and USJ where there is a very close connection with the Filipino communities. He illustrated USJ’s succession for the Secretariat of ASEACCU after the historical University of Santo Tomas in Manila, and the USJ’s “renewing and developing relationships” with dozens of universities, colleges, and schools in the Philippines. Rector Morgan stated that “we are very conscious about our relationship with the Filipino communities in Macao. We have been trying very hard to create the circumstance in which Filipino can see USJ as a natural place with values”.
In response, Consul General Lazaro expressed her gratitude to USJ’s hospitality and reminded of this special year marking the fiftieth anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations between China and the Philippines. Consul General Lazaro pointed out the multiple facets that make Macao different.
Later on, the significance of the Filipino composition in the student body was mentioned. Dr. Teresa Loong gave a brief picture to Consul General Lazaro on the population of the Filipino students which are a very important part of our community and are the key of the cabinet of the Student Association. During the meeting, USJ also provided an overview of her unique history and portfolio.
Consul General Lazaro and her team were also given a tour of the USJ Ilha Verde campus, including the Fabrication Lab, the Media Studios, the newly inaugurated Guilherme Lo and Teresa Lei Lo Library, Student Lounge and the Holy Cross Chapel.
The delegation of the Philippine Consulate General Macau SAR also met Ms. Micah Vibar, a graduating Business Administration student at USJ, an officer of the Student Association, and serves as student ambassador on campus.
In the same month last year, USJ welcomed the former Consul General Mr. Porfirio M. Mayo Jr. for a visit which later on initiated the plans on scholarship and fellowship for the non-resident worker’s identification card (blue card) households in Macao for both graduate and undergraduate degree programmes.
