string(951) "The University of Saint Joseph extends its heartfelt welcome to Bishop Stephen Lee, appointed, last Saturday, to head the Diocese of Macao. He now becomes the President of the Catholic Foundation for Higher Education, our title-holder, and we look forward to working closely with him to ensure the quality of the service we provide. With his extensive experience of university life, we believe Bishop Lee will help us adjust to the developing aims of the diocese and to the needs of society.
We take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Bishop Lai, as he steps down, for his support and supervision of the university for more than a decade. He has been a familiar figure with USJ since Prof. João Lourenço was its first Rector, and we have grown accustomed to his discreet but unfailing presence in all of USJ’s community masses, graduations and other significant events. We will always consider him a Friend of USJ.

The wetland management of Macao
Wetlands play a pivotal role in the maintaining the ecological balance of the local system by its functions as sources, sinks, and transformers of a multitude of chemical, biological, and genetic materials. The interaction of human society with wetlands to obtain multiple benefits-natural resources, amenities and environmental services such as ground water, fisheries, migratory birds habitat, etc. Anthropogenic stress due to the urban development and population growth has severely affected these ecosystems sustainability.
Macao is situated in the bird migration route between Siberia and Australia. Every winter large numbers of migratory birds come to Macao to live. To conserve the wetland resource of Macao, several wetland reservation zones were set up and managed by Macao SAR government, and meanwhile continuous ecological monitoring of various habitats in these wetlands are carried out to ensure habitats and facilities meeting the needs of wildlife.
Different types of management measures for each of the habitat types are developed and implemented, for the goal of providing the greatest quantity and highest quality of habitat possible to support waterfowl, other wildlife and plants, and to increase biodiversity. The Habitat Management Works can be divided into three aspects, namely the water, vegetation and mudflats. The lecture will explain the wetland management and biodiversity with wonderful video and photos, in order to make the student understanding the wetland’s ecological function easy.

Description:
In recent years, and mostly guided by a movement inside psychology, several social sciences and humanities (education, economics, sociology, health, management…) began turning their
foci to the study and optimization of positive topics.
Flourishing and healthy development (complementing the study of the unhealthy and pathological ones), constructive relational goods, Public Happiness, or positive conflict resolution, are examples of those orientations. Data from these studies brought a different and new light upon the specific arenas, and helped understand more broadly several individual and collective human processes.
The theoretical and empirical implications of these alignments will be addressed in this Public Lecture, alongside with practical implications for the fields of Psychology and Education.
Speakers:
Luís Miguel Neto is an Assistant Professor at the School of Social and Political Sciences, Lisbon University. He received his EdD in Family Therapy from the University of Massachusetts, USA and a post-graduate degree on Systemic Family Therapy from Sevilla University in Spain. At the Psychology School, Lisbon University, where he was a professor for twenty nine years, he was responsible for the SAFI – a Family and Individual Outpatient Clinic that served the community on a free-of-charge basis and was also a training centre in Solutions-Oriented Brief Psychotherapy. In this talk Gama describes his method of composition which includes creating the musical instruments for which the score is written. According to this method, a musical instrument is considered a formless container of meanings that constitute the narrative of a particular composition. Its design embodies the symbolic material the composer has collected to arrive at a specific musical lexicon.
Victor Gama (Angola/Portugal) is a composer, performer, designer of contemporary musical instruments as well as an electronics engineer. He holds a BSc in electronics engineering and an MA in Music Technology from Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design in London and has recently been visiting artist at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Accoustics (CCRMA) at Stanford University in 2014/15. His recent work includes collaborations and commissions with the Kronos Quartet, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Prince Claus Fund, the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, the Royal Opera House in London and the National Museums of Scotland. 3thousandRIVERS is his new multimedia opera project, scheduled to premiere at the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon on May 2016.

About the Talk
The energy sector is a key component and driver of economic development requiring a large amount of infrastructure, both to generate the electricity and to transmit it through electrical power lines. These important developments are sometimes planned for sensitive locations within important flyways. Wind energy is considered to be a clean energy source but it produces negative impacts regarding avian mortality in these energy facilities.
The potential impacts are likely to be related to risks resulting in death or injury, barrier and disturbance effects for migrating species and soaring birds which can affect both their condition and behavior and result in disturbance along the migratory route. These risks can be minimised if appropriate actions and mitigation procedures are integrated into the energy project.
BSJ 50MW Wind Farm (SW Portugal) is within a migratory flyway of international importance, being crossed by more than 5000 individual birds of over 30 different soaring bird species every autumn. The wind farm’s licensing was conditioned to the implementation of thorough bird mortality mitigation procedures including temporary curtailment of wind turbines in order to reduce the probability of bird casualties from collisions.
Radar Assisted Shutdown on Demand (RASOD) protocol, is a wind farm security perimeter with observers aided by a radar detected soaring birds approaching the wind farm, whose turbines were to be turned-off when pre-defined criteria of intense migration or presence of threatened species were met. RASOD may be an essential tool in reconciling wind energy production with the conservation of soaring birds in areas where such a conflict may emerge.
About the Speaker
Miguel Repas is an international EIA consultant and Executive Director of STRIX (an environmental consultancy based in Lisbon and Porto), responsible for a number of projects in Environmental Impact Assessment, Environmental and Ecological Management, with special reference to wind farm development. ABOUT THE TALK
This talk will map a counter-history of sustainability focusing on architectural imagination rather than technological developments, thereby questioning current mainstream perceptions of sustainability and the LEED program as a technical classification tool that empowers capitalist production, creating a new revenue source veiled by the ethics of environmentalism. These experiments in environmental architecture did not really work; they were reflections of the obsessions of their authors. In this sense, they register undigested or disdained historical events at the moment they took place. Yet, the role of these experiments in our contemporary perception of the environment and of current practice as related to the environment is vital. Revisiting these untimely histories might open up new paths of investigation on developing a critical position untied from the burden of ethics and common good.

In Memoriam
Robert Vincent Davis (1945-2015)

Dear staff and students,
Prof. Vincent Davis died peacefully last Thursday evening, in England, after a
short illness. His family informed us immediately and added: “He was a rock to many people and his death shakes our foundations. He remained pragmatic, strong spirited and good humoured to the end. I hopeyou can join with us in a great sense of relief that he is at peace, and joy at a life well lived.”
Prof. Davis taught at USJ from at least 2003 to Januay 2012, and had just finished providing supervision to some of our PhD students when he ws taken ill.Prof. Keith Morrison who was his colleague for many years, kindly accepted to write the tribute below to help us honour his memory
Our thoughts and prayers are with Prof. Vin Davis and his wife Rosemary and daughter Amy.

May he rest in Peace.
Fr. Peter Stilwell (Rector)
* * *
It is with great sadness that I received the news of Vin Davis, who has died of cancer at age 70. Vin was a man of disarming intellect, warmth, compassion and concern for education. Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, UK, he had the friendliness of a true Yor
kshire man and an interest in everything around him.
Vin’s enthusiasm for education was infectious. I first met him in the early 1980s, when he came from having worked in Australia and subsequently as the Head of a Teachers’ Centre inKendal, UK, to join our team of academic staff at North Riding College of Education
, Scarborough, now part of Hull University. He taught
Curriculum Studies, Environmental Studies and Sciece, and I remember himcarrying massive, heavy rock samples into the college library, for permanent exhibition. I recall with great affection the very many hours we spent discussing educational matth he had renovated virtually single-handedly, stone by stone, timber by timber), in a seaside fishingers, in the office which we shared, in his wonderful farmhou
se home outside Scarborough (whvillage pub on the way back from off-campus degree teaching, and more recently at his home in York. His insights into education were piercing, complex, informed and articulate. I learned so much from Vin, and we were a very strong partnership in working togetheric
We both left Scarborough at different times, he to join Her Majesty’s Inspectorate (HMI), at a time when respect for HMI was very strong. He remained at HMI past the normal retirement age, as his expertise was valued greatly by his HMI colleagues. After his retirement from HMI he continued to sit on the governing body of a school in York. When I moved to Macau, I was delighted when Vin, sometimes alone and sometimes with his wife Rosemary, joinedus in Maau. He came on a part-time basis, subsequently with a Personal Chair in Education, to
teach on Master’s, PhD and Diploma programmes at what was then the Inter-University Inst
itute of Macau, now the University of Saint Joseph. However, he quickly broadened out his work in Ma
cau, setting up a science network linked to a high-profil Science Centre in the UK, advising local schools o their science curricula and new laboratories, and joining the development
of the schools’ inspectorate system and staff in the DSEJ.
Vin served for very many years, until the present, as a member of the Editorial Board of the intern
ational journal Educational Research and Evaluation, formerly Evaluation and Research in Education. It is a measure of the man that, to my certain knowledge as Editor, he never, not once, turned down a request to review a paper for the journal. He was a rock-solid, reliable colleague.
Vin was a renowned geologist. In the field of implement petrology he was an acclaimed international expert on stone-age axes, a magnificent collection of which he had in his home, together with extremely noisy equipment in his garage for slicing thin section rock samples for microscopic inspection. He was the Chair and Chief Petrologist of the Implement Petrology Group in the UK. Recently he was a key figure in new research at Stonehenge. Heorganized conferences and leading publications in the field of implement petrology, and he took immense pleasure in publishing jointly with his scientist daughter. He was very frequently asked to conduct technical analysis on rock and axe samples by universities, and he was an external examiner for doctorate students in geology. His ‘Geology of Lakeland’ (UK)continues to be in print over 25 years since its first publication.Vin gave advice and comment to the Museums Service of Macau on the ancient stone-age and bronze-age artefacts in its collection.I have an abiding recollection of watching Vin and his daughter, Amy, poring over a rocky outcrop in Coloane, for close to an hour, engaged in deep discussion about its nature and origins. He would happily regale friends with stories of gabbro, hematite, crystal formations, fluorspar, and flint axe heads, and I used to send him rock samples from all over the world, which he would identify with incredible accuracy.
Vin had a love of life and lived it to the full. Who else would have driven a 1950s tractor across the side roads of northern England from West to East, from one home to another when he moved house? Who else would take a huge chainsaw across the English channel to renovate his house in France, or relish lunchtime oysters on a summer’s day by the riverside in Durham, UK, or stand in the open air on top of a three-storey house in York to replace a chimney stack? Who else would curl up in uncontrollable laughter at the thought of violent inner-city children singing innocent songs about a little red hen?
Vin had an unshakeable Catholic faith. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and nothing was too much for him to do for his family. At 195 centimetres tall, Vin was a huge man, big-hearted and a wonderful person. Thank you for your friendship. You have left us too soon. Requiescat in pace, Vincent.

string(2592) "On November 23, over 60 professors, staff and students of the University of St. Joseph, led by Pro-Rector Vincent Yang, visited the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. They were warmly received by Director General Li Nan of Department of Public Diplomacy and Information, Director General Zhang Jian of International Organizations and Legal Affairs Department, and Deputy Director General Li Yang of Policy Research Department and other officials. The Director Generals delivered presentations on a series of special topics, ranging from hot issues relating to current foreign policies of China, foreign affairs relating to Macau, international conventions and laws applicable to Macau, as well as the main functions and work of the Office in Macau. Among the visitors were Ambassador Carlos Frota, Dean Jose Alves of Faculty of Administration and Leadership, Dean Ana Correia of Faculty of Education and Psychology and other professors, Director Teresa Loon of Office of Student Affairs, and students from bachelor, master and doctoral programs. Over half of them are international faculties and students. After the presentations, the three Director Generals answered questions raised by the professors and students regarding the roles of universities in public diplomacy, international cultural exchange, and making Macau the platform for cooperation between China and Lusophone countries. Prof. Yang gave high remarks to the Office’s significant achievement in promoting public diplomacy. He thanked the Office for its strong support to the development of internationalized education which has helped to broaden the perspectives of university students in Macau. Ambassador Carlos recalled his pleasant experience of working with the Office when he served as the Consul General of Portugal after the handover of Macau. He indicated that USJ can make special contribution to the cooperation between China and Lusophone countries. The students enjoyed the visit to the Office and believed that it helped them better understand the foreign policies of China as well as the learning of international law and the Basic Law of Macau.

string(2525) "In the light of some speculation about the state of construction of the Ilha Verde campus, property of Macao Diocese, which will host part of the Diocesan College of St. Joseph and the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), we would like to remind all benefactors and friends of the project the following facts:
- In November 2012, the Catholic Foundation for Higher Education, title holder of USJ, signed the contract with HCCG Guilding and Civil Engineering (Macau) Limited (Hsin Chong) to build the campus.
- In June 2015, USJ was approached by a company from Mainland China, sub-subcontractor's of the construction work, who made serious claims against a subcontractor. The contact took place at the time of some demonstrations by workers at the site reported by the press.
- At the present moment, there is an ongoing dispute between Hsin Chong and the subcontractor, Iao Sang, and the agreement between the two companies was terminated by Hsin Chong in October.
- However, never have the public funds allocated to this project been at risk. The contract with Hsin Chong is particularly strict in this matter. Payments are made exclusively for work which has been completed. The work is then verified by the technical staff of MPS and the costs claimed by Hsin Chong are checked through in detail and certified by SWEETT, a quantity surveyor based in Hong Kong. These two companies have their own contract with the Catholic Foundation, and are therefore independent of the constructor.
- Each invoice submitted by Hsin Chong, accompanied by the technical report from MPS and the certification by SWEETT, is delivered to the donors, Macau Foundation and the Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ).
- At the end of every phase of the project, the accounts are audited by certified public accounting firm and delivered to Macao Foundation which, for its part, periodically sends its own technical staff to campus to check the information provided.
- Over the past months, the construction has never been halted and, according to information received today (4 November), there are currently 400 people working on the site – the activity is clear to any passerby.
The project has suffered delays, but present estimates by our technical advisors continue to indicate that it will be possible for the College and the University to use the new campus for the 2016-2017 academic year.

About the Talk
The Cape Verde Archipelago (eastern middle Atlantic) comprises 10 major islands (9 inhabited) and some islets with a volcanic origin and formed along a period of more than 26 millions of years. However, since its discovery in the 15
th Century, volcanic activity has been observed only at Fogo Island, with written accounts of 27 eruptive events. The 3 last eruptions occurred in 1951, 1995 and 2014-2015, with the last one having been accompanied by the author, as member of a volcanological mission of the Universidade de Lisboa.
The emitted lavas during the 2014-15 eruption occupied an area of circa 4.7 km
2, corresponding to an approximate volume of 4 x 10
7 m
3, almost completely destroying the villages of Portela and Bangaeira, this one located at some 5 km from the volcanic vent.
Besides the description of the eruption and its consequences, the causes of the Cape Verde volcanism will be discussed. The “eminent” birthing of a new island will be also mentioned.
About the Speaker
João Mata (born in Mozambique) is Associate Professor at the Departamento de Geologia da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (http://www.fc.ul.pt/), where he obtained his PhD (1997) and his Habilitation (2007). At the Universidade de Lisboa he teaches courses in the areas of Igneous Petrology, Metamorphic Petrology and Geochemistry. He is research member of the Associated Laboratory “Institute Dom Luiz” (http://idl.ul.pt) where he develops activity mainly centred on the origin of volcanic and plutonic rocks. In the last 10 years a significant part of his research activity had as focus the study of Cape Verde magmatism. He publishes regularly scientific papers in some of the most important scientific journals of Petrology and Geochemistry. He is also a team member of a scientific project based on the Institute of Science and Environment of the University of Saint Joseph to stud the geology of Macau.

ABOUT THE TALK
Coastal zones and shallow marine habitats are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth. In many locations, they are subject to a variety of anthropogenic stressors, such as pollution and eutrophication (organic enrichment). Over the last 30 years, loss of seagrasses and mangroves associated with eutrophication phenomena has become a worldwide problem. This talk explores the main causes of eutrophication, including the unbalance of the biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen and phosphorus, and focus on the effects of eutrophication on the structure (density/biomass, species diversity) and functioning (secondary production) of particular key species. In addition, mitigation and conservation measures will be explored.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Patrícia Cardoso completed her PhD at the University of Coimbra in 2005, and has been working in the same university researching in ecosystem ecology in estuarine and marine systems. In collaboration with Prof. Dave Raffaelli from the University of York, Cardoso has been developing research in long-term studies on benthic communities in response to multiple stressors, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. Her recent research interests also include ocean acidification and global warming associated with emergent contaminants and their impacts on the trophic interactions and reproduction of aquatic organisms. She authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications in the area of Marine Ecology and Ecotoxicology, and is research advisor to several MSc and PhD students.
