Announcement: Re-organisation the Academic Units of University
PRESS RELEASE
On Saturday 27th June the General Council of the University of Saint Joseph approved a re-organisation the academic units of University. With effect from 1st July 2020 the following changes will take place:
- The School of Education and the Faculty of Social Sciences will be merged to create a Faculty of Social Sciences and Education.
- The Faculty of Creative Industries and the Faculty of Humanities will merge to form a Faculty of Arts and Humanities.
- With the transfer of the Department of Philosophy to the Faculty of Religious Studies this will now be renamed the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy.
- The School of Business and Law will be upgraded to the status of a Faculty and be known as the Faculty of Business and Law.
In addition to the existing Bishop Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education, the General Council also agreed to the immediate establishment of two further research centres:
- The Xavier Research Centre for Memory and Identity, in partnership to Macau Ricci Institute, concentrating on the areas of language and culture, history and heritage, ethics and social doctrine.
- The Macau Observatory for Social Development will be established in partnership with Caritas Macau and other social agencies of the Catholic Church and will work on the areas of health, well-being, social development, and the social impact of the Catholic Church.
- The University will also establish an English Language Centre to undertake the instruction in initial English language acquisition and testing for students of the University.
The General Council endorsed a plan to relocate the University Library to the centre of the Campus, to move the service offices to the space freed up by the Library move.
Finally, the General Council also gave its consent to a plan to reshape the degree programmes, such that, in addition to their meeting the requirements of the Macau Higher Education Law, they also comply with the European Credit Transfer System, which was established by the Bologna Accord and is fast becoming the global standard for programmes in higher education.
Following these announcements, the Rector has made the following appointments, with immediate effect:
- Professor Elisa Monteiro – Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences and Education
- Professor Carlos Caires – Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities
- Professor Father Franz Gassner – Dean of the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy
- Professor Jenny Lao-Phillips – Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law
- Professor David Gonçalves has been appointed for a further two-year term as Dean of the Institute of Science and the Environment.
- Professor Ana Correia has been appointed Director of the Bishop Domingos Lam Centre for Research inEducation
- Professor Alan Baxter has been appointed Director of the Xavier Centre for Memory and Identity
- The Director of the Macau Observatory for Social Developments will be announced in due course
The Rector thanked Professors Ana Correia, Alan Baxter and Vitor Teixeira for their work as deans over the last few years.
In making the announcement, the Rector said that through this reorganisation, which was designed to consolidate and build upon the direction of travel of the University over the last few years, the academic structure of the University would better reflect the nature of the University of Saint Joseph as a Catholic University, specialising in postgraduate teaching and research in the humanities and social sciences. It would do so by creating academic units of sufficient critical mass and coherence in areas of study to be both robust and agile as the University seeks to carry its role as an international Catholic University in and of China.
The Rector said that the University’s mission was to serve the people, community and Diocese of Macau, the Greater Bay Area, China and the wider region. In seeking to fulfil the mandate of the Bishop and Catholic Foundation for Higher Education and working within the welcome framework recently set out by the Chief Executive of the Special Administration, the Rector emphasised that the University of Saint Joseph’s aim is to produce graduates of the highest personal integrity, capable of rigorous critical and creative thinking, people who instinctively work collaboratively, who value of the other, and seek to move from proficiency to mastery of their chosen field discipline. He said that these changes, together with the ever-closer collaboration with both the Diocese of Macau and the Catholic University of Portugal, will better enable the University of Saint Joseph to be true to its identity and mission, and fulfil its ambitions to be of service to all.

No passado dia 27 de Junho, o Conselho Geral da Universidade de São José aprovou a reestruturação das unidades académicas da Universidade, tendo esta entrado em vigor em 1 de Julho de 2020, abrangendo as seguintes alterações:
- A Escola de Educação e a Faculdade de Ciências Sociais foram incorporadas numa só unidade, dando origem à criação da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Educação;
- A junção da Faculdade de Indústrias Criativas e da Faculdade de Humanidades deram origem à Faculdade de Artes e Humanidades;
- Com a incorporação do Departamento de Filosofia na Faculdade de Estudos das Religiões, a mesma passou a denominar-se Faculdade de Estudos das Religiões e Filosofia;
- A Escola de Gestão e Direito viu o seu estatuto ser elevado para o nível de Faculdade, passando assim a denominar-se Faculdade de Gestão e Direito.
Para além do actual Centro de Investigação em Educação Domingos Lam, o Conselho Geral concordou igualmente com a criação de mais dois centros de investigação e um centro de Língua Inglesa, nomeadamente:
- O Centro de Investigação para a Memória e Identidade Xavier, que será gerido conjuntamente com o Instituto Ricci de Macau, irá debruçar-se sobre as áreas da língua e cultura, história e herança, ética e doutrina social;
- O Observatório para o Desenvolvimento Social de Macau será instituído em parceria com a Caritas de Macau e outras entidades de cariz social da Igreja Católica, e irá focar-se nas áreas relacionadas com a saúde, o bem-estar, o desenvolvimento social, e o impacto social da Igreja Católica;
- A Universidade instituirá também o Centro de Língua Inglesa para a instrução dos alunos da Universidade na fase inicial de aprendizagem e avaliação da Língua Inglesa.
O Conselho Geral também aprovou o plano para a relocalização da Biblioteca principal da Universidade para uma área mais central do Campus da Ilha Verde e a relocalização de alguns dos serviços da Universidade para o localonde se encontra actualmente a Biblioteca.
Por fim, o Conselho Geral aprovou, de igual modo, o plano de reestruturação dos cursos conferentes de grau, de modo a que os mesmos cumpram os requisitos estabelecidos pelo Regime do Ensino Superior de Macau e pelo Sistema Europeu de Transferência de Créditos, criado pelo Acordo de Bolonha e o qual se está a tornar rapidamente na referência mundial para programas do Ensino Superior.
No âmbito destas alterações, decidiu ainda o Reitor fazer as seguintes nomeações, com efeito imediato:
- Professora Elisa Monteiro – Directora da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Educação;
- Professor Carlos Caires – Director da Faculdade de Artes e Humanidades;
- Professor Franz Gassner – Director da Faculdade de Estudos das Religiões e Filosofia;
- Professora Jenny Lao-Phillips – Directora da Faculdade de Gestão e Direito;
- Professor David Gonçalves é reconduzido para mais um mandato de dois anos como Director do Instituto de Ciência e Ambiente;
- Professora Ana Correia é nomeada como Directora do Centro de Investigação em Educação Domingos Lam;
- Professor Alan Baxter é nomeado como Director do Centro de Investigação para a Memória e Identidade Xavier.
O Reitor aproveitou a ocasião para manifestar o seu profundo agradecimento pelo trabalho desenvolvido ao longo dos últimos anos pelos Professores Alan Baxter, Ana Correia e Vítor Teixeira.
Neste seguimento, o Reitor esclareceu também que a reestruturação levada a cabo visa consolidar o caminho atéaqui percorrido pela Universidade. Assim, a nova reestruturação tem por objectivo melhor reflectir a natureza e gênese da Universidade de São José enquanto Universidade Católica, especializada no ensino de cursos de pós-graduação e investigação na área das Humanidades e Ciências Sociais. A Universidade alcançará este objectivo através da criação de unidades académicas munidas de coerência e massa crítica suficientemente robustas e ágeis para o desempenho do seu papel enquanto Universidade Católica internacional, dentro e fora da China.
O Reitor enfatizou ainda que a missão da Universidade é a de servir as pessoas, a comunidade e a Diocese de Macau, a região da Grande Baía, a China e seus arredores. Ao procurar cumprir o mandato do Bispo e da Fundação Católica de Ensino Superior Universitário, dentro da estrutura estabelecida pelo Chefe do Executivo de Macau, o Reitor reiterou que um dos principais objectivos da Universidade de São José é a formação de graduandos de alta integridade pessoal, capazes de raciocínio crítico rigoroso e pensamento criativo, com ímpeto para a colaboração, que valorizam o próximo e procuram desenvolver a máxima proficiência nas suas áreas de conhecimento de eleição. O Reitor sublinhou também que as presentes alterações, que serão levadas a cabo numa crescente colaboração com a Diocese de Macau e com a Universidade Católica Portuguesa, melhor permitirão que a Universidade de São José seja fiel à sua verdadeira identidade e missão, assim como o cumprimento do objectivo de a todos servir.

聖若瑟大學校董會於6月27日（星期六）批准對大學的學術部門進行重整。以下改組於2020年7月1日起生效：
- 教育學院和社會科學學院合併為社會科學及教育學院。
- 創意產業學院和人文學院合併為藝術及人文學院。
- 哲學系轉調到宗教研究學院後，名為宗教研究及哲學學院。
- 商學及法律系擢升為商學及法律學院。
除了現有的林家駿主教教育研究中心外，校董會亦同意進一步建立兩個研究中心：
- 沙勿略「回憶與認同」研究中心，與澳門利氏學社合作，將專注於語言和文化，歷史遺產，道德與社交教義。
- 澳門社會發展研究中心，會致力於健康、福祉、社會發展的範疇內與澳門明愛及其他天主教會的社服機構合作，還有研究天主教會對社會的影響。
- 大學還將建立一個英語語言中心，為學生提供基礎英語語言教育和測試。
校董會通過將大學圖書館遷至校園中心，將服務辦公室移至圖書館搬遷後騰出的空間。
最後，校董會同意了重塑學位課程的計劃，除了滿足《澳門高等教育法》的要求之外，它們還符合由歐盟建立的歐洲學分轉移制度，而且博洛尼亞進程(Bologna Accord)正在將來成為高等教育計劃的全球標準。
因此，校長作出以下任命並立即生效：
- Elisa Monteiro 教授為社會科學及教育學院院長
- Carlos Caires 教授為藝術及人文學院院長
- 範聖言神父為宗教研究及哲學學院院長
- 劉鈺韾教授為商學及法律學院院長
- David Gonçalves 教授為科學及環境研究學院院長
- Ana Correia 教授為林家駿主教教育研究中心主任
- Alan Baxter 教授為沙勿略「回憶與認同」研究中心主任
- 澳門社會發展研究中心主任將在適當時候公佈
衷心感謝Ana Correia教授，Alan Baxter教授和Vitor Teixeira教授在過去幾年擔任院長的工作。
校長表示，通過這次重整是為了鞏固大學過去幾年的發展方向，架構重組將更好地突顯大學的角色；聖若瑟大學是一所天主教大學，專門從事學位後教學和人文社會科學研究。 為此，在大學力求作為中國的一所國際天主教大學發揮作用的同時，在學習領域建立具有足夠效率和連貫性的學術單位，使大學更強大和更靈活。
校長認為大學的使命是為澳門、大灣區、中國以及更廣闊地區的人民、社區和教區服務。校長為履行主教和天主教高等教育基金會的任務，接受澳門行政長官施政框架內開展工作，強調聖若瑟大學的目標是培養最高操守的畢業生，他們除了能夠接受嚴謹的批判和具創意思維，另具有團體合作精神及重視其他人，更不斷提升所選的學科領域到更專業層次。他說，這些變化以及與澳門教區和葡萄牙天主教大學日益密切的合作，將使聖若瑟大學更加忠實於自己的身份和使命，並實現為所有人服務的目標。
