Public Lecture: Life and Music of Composer Leopold Godowsky on 22 October 2015 (Thursday) by Dr. Carl Petersson
at Speakers’ Hall

20151022 Life and Music of Composer Leopold Godowsky

ABOUT THE TALK

This public lecture includes visuals and live piano performance built around Godowsky’s Java Suite, an original work based on the composer’s tour of Indonesia. Godowsky had important ideas about music that grew from his love of different cultures, people, and countries. Petersson, a world-class musician from Sweden, studied the life and works of Leopold Godowsky as part of his doctoral program at the Music Academy in Kraków, Poland, and has recorded a solo CD of Godowsky’s “Java Suite.” He presented similar seminars for college students in Europe.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Born in 1981 in Lund, Sweden, the internationally known pianist, Carl Petersson has gained a reputation for not being afraid of new and unknown repertory by composers such as Friedrich von Flotow, Helge Evju and Lars Bisgaard. Carl’s concert programs often include lesser well known composers such as Alkan, Godowsky and Albeniz, combining them with the likes of Bach, Mozart and Chopin. Carl has performed as a soloist as well as with orchestras on numerous occasions in Canada, USA, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, France, The Czech Republic, Germany, Israel and is now touring in China. His recordings released on the Sterling label have been widely acclaimed by international critics (e.g. The Gramophone, Klassikmagazin, Klassieke Zaken and Classical Lost and Found).

Carl is a prize-winner of numerous competitions and currently a very dedicated piano teacher at the Wroclaw (Breslau) Academy of Music, Poland. Being very active as a pedagogue, Carl has given Master Classes in Sweden, Canada and the U.S.
