The Public Lecture “Directing Notes: A Methodology of Breaking Down a Film” will take place on Thursday, April 20 at USJ Media Lab (room 604).

This lecture will delve into the crucial elements that make a film, with emphasis on the point of view of the director, covering topics such as the importance of understanding the story, identifying the spine of the film, and determining whose film it is. Additionally, the lecture will explore the significance of character wants and obstacles, and how they drive the plot forward. Finally, the lecture will discuss the tone of the piece, and how it can impact the overall impact of the film.

Michael Unger shares this remarkable methodology of breaking down a film, that he learned from his film supervisor at Columbia University. Whether you are a filmmaker, film student, or simply a lover of cinema, this lecture is not to be missed. 

About the Speaker:

Michael A. Unger is an Associate Professor of Film at Sogang University’s Graduate School of Metaverse and Department of Media and Entertainment in Seoul. He is a writer, director, and editor of documentaries, music videos, narrative and experimental films screened and broadcasted in the United States, Europe, and Asia. He latest music video “Not So Fast” featuring MC Meta won the Audience Award at the Berlin Short Film Festival in 2022. His last documentary Far From Forgotten co-directed with Jia Lim is part of the permanent collection at the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History in Seoul, Korea. He has published work on documentaries, film directors, and Korean popular culture in academic journals such as ;Journal of Film and Video, The Journal of Popular Music Studies, and Visual Communication Journal ;and other periodicals in the United States, The United Kingdom, and Korea.
