ISE Science Seminar | Air Quality and Climate Change – Policies and Measures for a Double Win

05

Jul

The Institute of Science and Environment will hold a Seminar on “Air Quality and Climate Change – Policies and Measures for a Double Win” on 5 July 2023.

ABOUT THE TALK:

In general, greenhouse gases emissions causing climate change and other substances causing air pollution, particularly in cities, have the same sectorial sources. Transportation, predominantly road transport, is the main responsible area for both carbon dioxide emissions contributing to climate change and nitrogen oxides and particles, the main pollutants causing increased morbidity and premature deaths, while also generating secondary pollutants damaging the environment. Therefore, it is extremely important to develop strategies where a combination of policy and measures tackling activities where both the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and other atmospheric pollutants can be achieved. The promotion of renewable sources providing an increased electrification of the energy systems supporting electric vehicles, sustainable mobility plans promoting soft and active modes with improved public transport, the use of new fuels such as hydrogen, are absolutely key to assure a pathway at the different geographical levels towards carbon neutrality and a better air quality. Ambitions goals and planning are crucial as part of the climate crisis action, from municipalities to the national levels.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Francisco Ferreira, NOVA University Lisbon (FCT-NOVA), Portugal

Francisco Ferreira is an Associate Professor with the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering of the NOVA School of Science and Technology and a researcher in CENSE – Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research. He holds a degree in Environmental Engineering from FCT NOVA, a master’s degree from Virginia Tech, USA and a PhD from NOVA Lisboa. He has been developing work in the areas of air pollution, climate change, and sustainable development. He is also the President of the national environmental non-governmental organisation ZERO – Association for the Sustainability of the Earth System.
