Department of Architecture and Design Lecture Series Fall 2022 I Alternative Processes “Design Tactics. Lessons from Crisis”

20

Oct

The USJ Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) is organising the Lecture Series Fall 2022 – Alternative Processes “Design Tactics. Lessons from Crisis” in 20 October, 2022.

ABOUT THE SERIES:

The USJ Department of Architecture and Design (DAD) is pleased to announce the Lecture Series Fall 2022, inviting students, architects, designers and the wider community to join and share an open dialogue. The lecture series will stage public conversations with speakers from across the architecture discipline under the theme “Alternative Processes”. At a moment when the profession is going through some significant questions on a global scale, we will explore the working processes of practitioners that gravitate on the boundaries of architecture, seeking alternatives to the established forms of architectural design.

With this initiative, DAD highlights its commitment to experimental work at the edge of the discipline, outlining propositions for alternative forms of practice. The Fall 2022 lecture series includes five sessions featuring the work of five innovative architects and design studios.

ABOUT THE TALK:

Architecture is a heavy discipline that requires a large amount of resources and labour. Some cities and regions now accept crisis not as an anomaly but as an endless continuing situation. For many, crisis is the new normal. This can make difficult for new or young studios to find commissions. Learning from the crisis we have developed Design Tactics aimed for students and design beginners to keep moving their work forward when conditions are adverse.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Graduated under architect Manuel Aires Mateus (Professor Harvard, USA; Mendrizio, Switzerland; Oslo School of Architecture) and worked at João Luís Carrilho da Graça office (Head of Architecture Universidade Autonoma and Universidade de Evora, Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, France).

He won first place in an architecture competition which gave way to the creation of the office Kaputt!. Awards in international competitions and an exhibition at Ordem dos Arquitectos brought media interest, having been published in 20+ books and magazines. Studio active during the European Financial Crisis. This experience led Jedenov to develop “Lessons from the Crisis” and “Tactics Developed in Times of Economic Crisis Applied in Design Studios” programs implemented in Lisbon, Portugal and Universtität Innsbruck, Austria.
