The Doctoral programme in Science is closely linked to the research lines of the Institute of Science and Environment. It covers topics in Environmental, Biological, Marine, and Earth Sciences, both on applied and fundamental themes. Research questions may be focused on issues related to Macao and the Greater Bay Area or address topics of a more global scope. Doctoral candidates are often integrated into wider multidisciplinary international research teams, having the possibility to work for periods abroad in partner universities. Candidates in this field are expected to provide a significant contribution to their area of studies through original research published in international peer-reviewed journals.
During the 3-5 years of study, Doctorate in Science students hold full-time student status.
- Research and Development for private and public organizations
- Academic careers
Students complete the curricular part of the programme during the first year, which is composed of the following 5 modules:
- Methodologies of Investigation
- Methods and Techniques for Quantitative Research
- Methods and Techniques for Qualitative Research
- Integrative Research Seminars
- Specialist Studies and Reading Programme
During the first year of study, students must also prepare a thesis proposal. The completion of all modules and University approval of the proposal is a requirement to progress to the thesis-writing stage of the programme.
Working directly under an academic supervisor, the doctoral student independently completes an original and significant research project. Students begin their thesis once their proposed work and supervisory arrangements have been approved by the University.
