USJ Rector, Prof. Fr. Peter Stilwell, and PIRO Director, Mrs. Ana Paula Mota, attended the 2019 International Conference “Transforming Higher Education for the Future” organised by the IAU. The event was hosted by the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP), in Mexico, from November 13th to 15th, 2019.
The Rector of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), Prof. Fr. Peter Stilwell, and the Director of the Public and International Relations (PIRO), Mrs. Ana Paula Mota, attended the 2019 International Conference “Transforming Higher Education for the Future” organised by the International Association of Universities (IAU). The event was hosted by the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP), in Mexico, from November 13th to 15th, 2019.
This international conference was dedicated to exploring how higher education leaders envisage higher education for the future, namely how universities should face the impact of rapid technological progress and the urgent call to develop sustainable societies.
The four plenary sessions covered: I “Rethinking higher education in a transforming world”; II “Between tradition and innovation”; III “Aiming higher in a transforming world”; and IV “Creating the future for higher education (designing solutions)”. Following each plenary session, breakout meetings studied detailed aspects of these challenges and afforded opportunities for networking and documentation sharing between institutions.
During plenary session III (“Aiming higher in a transforming world”), BBC StoryWorks officially launched its new series promoting the role of higher education as a catalyst for developing sustainable societies. This documentary series, developed in cooperation with IAU, spotlights exciting university projects making a positive change in their communities by promoting diversity, leadership and social responsibility. USJ was among the 35 universities from 30 countries selected for this project. The three-minute films provide a captivating patchwork illustration of the essential contribution being made by higher education to social development worldwide. At the end of the conference, participants were invited to a Green Campus Tour of BUAP and a visit to its Botanical Garden.
