On 22 August 2026, the USJ Library welcomed Sands Eco 360 Ambassadors to the “Immersive Mangrove Reading Room” for another hands-on journey into the world of Macao’s mangroves.
Led by the USJ Mangrove Project team, the Ambassadors explored some of the representative plants and animals found in Macao’s mangroves through a series of sensory exploration missions. Starting as “Mangrove Researchers”, they used their Researcher’s Handbooks to search for the Mangrove Guardians, observe their features and collect information along the way.
After completing the exploration missions and learning about the mangrove plants and animals behind each Guardian, the journey continued with a Mangrove Guardians painting workshop. The Ambassadors got creative and personalised their own 3D-printed models, which they could bring home as a memento of their visit.
The Mangrove Guardians were developed through a combination of AI-generated concepts and digital fabrication, turning ideas inspired by Macao’s mangrove ecosystems into something visitors can see, touch and take part in. Through these interactive experiences, the exhibition offers a different way to discover the biodiversity of mangroves.
The “Immersive Mangrove Reading Room” has been extended until November 2026 at the USJ Library, Ilha Verde Campus. Schools, universities, community associations and non-profit organisations are welcome to arrange a guided visit and take part in the “Mangrove Researcher” sensory exploration experience.
To arrange a visit, please contact library@usj.edu.mo or mangroves@usj.edu.mo with your preferred date and time, organisation name and expected number of participants.
The project is supported by the Sands Eco360 Drop by Drop program.
