The University of Saint Joseph receives stars for all four areas of University Social Responsibility in the IFCU’s Newman Benchmarking Framework.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) receives stars for all four areas of University Social Responsibility in the Newman Benchmarking Framework, becoming the first university in the Asia region rated by the Newman Benchmarking Framework. The Framework is developed by the International Federation of Catholic Universities (IFCU) as an alternative to higher education ranking systems.

The Newman Framework focuses on University Social Responsibility and considers the unique heritage and contributions of Catholic higher education in its assessment. The four areas of assessment are institutional governance, environmental protection, coherence of identity, and the social practices of the university as an employer and engaged actor in society.

Speaking of the results, USJ Rector Professor Stephen Morgan said, “I am extremely proud of the good work we are doing at USJ as evidenced by this latest rating. It is an honor to be rated in all four areas by ‘the Michelin stars’ of Catholic higher education.” The Rector further expressed, “My hope is that we will be followed by other Catholic higher education institutions in Asia to better share and learn best-practices in University Social Responsibility.”

One of the unique features of the Newman Benchmarking Framework is the use of artificial intelligence to complement data provided by a university. The artificial intelligence system also provides a forecast of future trends for universities to consider when making decisions about institutional development. The forecasted ratings are positive across the board for USJ, with each indicator projected to reach two- or three-star recognition as USJ continues to innovate and serve.
