The event explored the cultural and technological factors behind the prevalence of telecom frauds and highlighted the role of media literacy in combating such scams.
The School of Education (SED) and the Domingos Lam Centre for Research in Education (DLCRE) at USJ co-hosted a public lecture entitled “Telecom Frauds” Are Not Related to You? – Media Literacy in the AI Era on 9 May The lecture was delivered by Dr. Sio Ka I, Alvis, Assistant College Lecturer at the HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education, and moderated by Prof. Miranda Mak, Assistant Professor of the School of Education and Coordinator of DLCRE. The event explored the cultural and technological factors behind the prevalence of telecom frauds and highlighted the role of media literacy in combating such scams.
As a specialist in media literacy and cultural studies, Dr. Sio analyzed the rising trends of telecom frauds and challenged common misconceptions about personal immunity to such threats. Around 30 participants attended this lecture and have gained valuable insights into the practical strategies for identifying and avoiding fraudulent scams, fostering critical thinking in the AI era. The engaging discussion provided attendees with practical tools to enhance their digital vigilance.
