On March 18, 2026, the Rui Cunha Foundation hosted an academic session titled “Itinerarium Egeriae and Catacomb Frescoes: History and Iconography in Female Writing and Funerary Imagery”, part of the “Doctoral Talk in the City” series organised by the Doctoral School of the University of Sainrt Joseph (USJ).

The session featured guest speaker Sílvia Siqueira, Associate Professor at the State University of Ceará (Brazil), who visited Macao at the invitation USJ, and moderated by Prof. António Maneira,

Professor Siqueira offered a deep dive into the travelogue of Egeria – a rare and precious document authored by a woman in antiquity – and provided a comparative analysis between this written narrative and the funerary iconography of women from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. During the lecture, Siqueira highlighted how these early Christian figures were instrumental in the transmission of faith and discussed the pedagogical potential of these historical texts and images in revealing the collective mentalities of the period.

The lecture, conducted in Portuguese, provided attendees with a profound look at Late Antiquity, focusing on the social, religious, and cultural roles of women. The event highlighted the historical importance of the Christian East and its enduring cultural connections.
