1st Summit of the “Alliance for R&D on Health Science and Technology for Longevity between China and Portuguese Speaking Countries” & Inauguration Ceremony at USJ Macao

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao, in collaboration with the Macau Foundation and MCCY Science & Greater Health Manufactory, has launched the 1st Summit of the “Alliance for R&D on Health Science and Technology for Longevity between China and Portuguese Speaking Countries” & Inauguration Ceremony on 28 October 2025.



The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Macao, in collaboration with the Macau Foundation and MCCY Science & Greater Health Manufactory, is hosting the 1st Summit of the “Alliance for R&D on Health Science and Technology for Longevity between China and Portuguese Speaking Countries” from 28 to 30 October 2025. The event, to be held across Macao and Hengqin, featured an official inauguration ceremony for the Alliance at the USJ Macau Ilha Verde Campus on 28 October.

The inauguration ceremony was officiated by D. Stephen Lee Bun-Sang, Chancellor of USJ and Bishop of the Macau Diocese; Mr. Chu Zhiwen, Representative of the Education and Youth Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR; Mr. Alexandre Leitão, Consul-General of Portugal in Macao; Dr. Zhong Yi, Acting President of the Administrative Committee of the Macao Foundation; Mr. Lei Chi Wai, Deputy Secretary-General of the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Forum Macao); Mr. Cheong Chok Man, Director of the Policy Research and Regional Development Bureau; Mr. Lo lek Long, Director of the Health Bureau; Mr. Ip Sio Kai, Member of the Legislative Assembly of Macau; Prof. Paulo Quaresma, Rector’s Representative on China Affairs at the University of Évora; and Prof. Zhang Shuguang, Vice-Rector of USJ.

This landmark initiative establishes a collaborative network uniting leading universities, research institutions, science parks, and healthcare enterprises from Macau, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, mainland China, and Portuguese-speaking countries. The Alliance is dedicated to advancing global research and application of health science technologies aimed at extending human healthspan and improving quality of life through systematic, scientific innovation. The Summit will operate under the theme “AI-Empowered Anti-Aging, Collaborative R&D for Longevity”, facilitating discussions on cutting-edge breakthroughs and the commercialization of emerging technologies.

The Summit agenda include the Alliance’s launch, followed by the signing of a Joint Communique on R&D Cooperation by the founding institutional members including José Câmara, Vice-Rector for Innovation, Internationalization and Research of University of Évora; Artur Silva, Vice-Rector for Research of University of Aveiro; Sílvia Cristina da Cruz Marques Socorro, Vice Rector for Research, Innovation and Development of University of Beira Interior; Victor Nogueira, Pro-Rector for Digital Transformation and Open Science of University of Évora; Fernanda Marques, Vice-President of the School of Medicine of University of Minho; Hugo Barros, Director of Division of Entrepreneurship and Technology Transfer of University of Algarve; Jin Jiangjin, Director of the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation of Zunyi Medical University at Zhuhai,China; Liu Donglin, Assistant Dean, College of Information Sciences, Guangzhou Xinhua University; and Paulo Quaresma, Representing Associate Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Catholic University of Portugal.

The programme also features a series of keynote addresses from  international experts including Prof.Paulo Quaresma, Rector’s Representative on China Affairs at the University of Évora, Portugal; Dr. Huang Yuan, Senior Research Fellow of the University of Hong Kong and Director of the Hong Kong Longevity Medical Centre; and Prof.Cai Zhiming, Member of the Trust Committee of the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund.

A highlight of the event is the official unveiling of the USJ Academy for Smart Health and Longevity R&D, which will serve as the permanent Secretariat for the Alliance. The Summit also witnessed the signing of a strategic financial support agreement between the University of Saint Joseph, represented by its Vice-Rector Dr. Zhang Shuguang, and the Future Science and Education Development Foundation Limited of Hong Kong, represented by its Executive Director Ms. Sze Kok. The proceedings will conclude with a strategic roundtable discussion on the future prospects for Sino-Portuguese collaboration in longevity technology, chaired by Prof. Dai Jianbiao, Dean of the newly established USJ Academy.
