Modules
Year 1
This module provides the foundational concepts of Business Analytics and and their application in business and management areas. The application of graphical analysis using statistical metrics and mathematical approaches to support business decisions is presented. Information systems and the integration of data design and management with business operations is a key aspect, covering new technologies with significant impact on businesses, such as Data Privacy, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, the Internet of Things, Fintech, and Blockchain, among others. Challenges related to information system security and control, data protection, and the ethical and social impact of business analytics and information systems. A practical approach will be adopted with workshops and hands-on activities.
This course adopts multiple data analysis and visualization tools, such as spreadsheet managers, statistical computational tools, data manipulation and visualization, and programming languages for data analysis. Students will create and manage data for various specialized professional purposes and situations. They will customize their computational tools to meet project needs and enhance productivity. The objective of the module is to equip students with multiple tools, techniques, and knowledge related to Business Analytics.
This module introduces relevant concepts related to probability and statistics applied to Business Analytics, and motivates students to perform data collection and create analytical skills. Topics covered include descriptive statistics, probability, random variables and probability distributions, mathematical operations, sampling and data descriptions, tests of hypotheses, linear regression and correlation, experiments, and fractions. Additionally, qualitative data analysis tools and techniques are also presented with the aim to improve decision-making processess.
From the beginning, this module discusses how technology is a key area of business disruption, focusing on new industries and innovations based on artificial intelligence. More advanced data analysis techniques not presented before such as non-linear classification, data clustering, and forecasting models are presented with the focus on real business applications. In addition, adopting AI tools is intensively discussed, differentiating the use of supervised and non-supervised techniques to solve real-life problems. The approach will be practical and project-based. Machine learning and deep learning case studies are presented using several public datasets with analysis from different industries, such as healthcare, tourism, finance, and economy.
This module aims to enable students to apply the fundamental ideas of data analysis applied to financial economics to address problems in the area of corporate finance. Students will learn the principles of Corporate Finance from the perspective of a financial manager dealing with Corporate data. The process of how financial decisions based on data analysis will be presented, following topics such as working capital, capital structure, and capital budgeting decisions.
This course is designed to equip students with the key tools to explore and understand marketing practices from a Business Analytics perspective, considering trends such as neuromarketing, digital marketing, and marketing analytics. In particular, students will learn how to analyze data for making strategic decisions, such as entering a new market and to what extent the company must adapt its products to the new reality. By the end of the course, students will acquire the basic decision-making skills to design an international marketing program for an actual product. In this module, cooperative learning principles and assessment techniques are applied; emphasis is placed on enhancing student-to-student learning, forming student teams for involvement in various pieces of module assessment, such as class workshops and project work.
This course will examine the theory and tools of effective leadership, influencing others, and becoming a role model.
The course will focus on strategic leadership and management, including critical thinking, through developing and assessing a strategic plan. You will also consider your organizational context and create a personal development plan to work on throughout the course.
In today's world, leadership has an increasingly important place in society. In the past, leaders were seen as born rather than created. However, the contemporary view is that leadership skills can be developed through an understanding of self and others, understanding the team culture's needs, and communicating and facilitation skills.
This module introduces essential concepts, issues, and application techniques for process design and implementation, as well as planning, managing, and controlling small, medium, and large projects. In particular, multiple tools and techniques are presented to allow students to execute their plans and tasks. Different approaches and methodologies for planning, managing, and controlling selected different types of projects are considered in detail, such as rapid prototyping and business improvement methodologies such as Critical Path Method (CPM) and PERT used for larger industrial projects. A case approach and project-oriented learning are adopted. The students will plan and design processes and projects based on real problems. Computer software packages for process and project management are used.
This module aims to discuss the application of tools and techniques to solve real problems for businesses from different industries. The course focuses on trending areas that build on the students' acquired business analytics knowledge from theoretical and managerial perspectives. Structured in workshop-based sessions that involve lectures, case-study discussions, and seminars, this course is designed to be practical and experiential. By the end of the module, students will have developed expertise in the topics they reviewed and the capability to accomplish projects and assignments in more complex situations.
Year 2
This module focuses on developing solutions for several problems using Business Analytics tools and techniques for different industries such as Tourism, Human Resources, Healthcare, and Finance, among others. From the data collection, application modeling, and effective data analysis, this module will be project-based and focused on real-life case studies and available datasets. The learning process should follow a project-based learning approach, and the students will handle actual business data and provide analysis and solutions using computational tools and reasoning.
The capstone project links students' academic studies and the work environments in Macau and international companies. The module allows students to apply their acquired academic skills to solving and advising on real business problems under the guidance and supervision of a partner organization and the Capstone Project program coordinator. It aims to integrate the application of all concepts learned in the previous modules. It consists of two main deliverables. The first deliverable is the problem framing, solution modeling, and implementation planning of the Business Analytics Solution. The second deliverable is developing the solution with proper justification and performance analysis.
