As the conference entered its fifth year, it continued its tradition of encouraging participants to cultivate an international perspective, collaborative skills, and leadership abilities.
The Macau Model United Nations Promotion Association, together with the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences (FHES) and the Macao Observatory of Social Development (MOSD) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), co-organised the “5th Macau Model United Nations Conference” on 6 – 9 August 2026 at the Ilha Verde Campus of USJ. The event attracted nearly 160 secondary and university students from the United Kingdom, Beijing, Xiamen, Guangzhou, Huizhou, Hong Kong, and Macao.
As the conference entered its fifth year, it continued its tradition of encouraging participants to cultivate an international perspective, collaborative skills, and leadership abilities through engaging with international issues, articulating viewpoints, debating policies, and simulating the process of “national representatives” delivering resolutions. The event also aimed to promote the culture of Model United Nations in Macao.
This year’s conference featured four committees and, for the first time, opened registration to university students. The committees included: a Cantonese-language secondary-school session simulating the UN Disarmament and International Security Committee; a Cantonese-language session for both secondary and university students simulating the British House of Commons; an English-language session simulating the UN SOCHUM; and a Mandarin-language session simulating the UN Security Council. The topics spanned technology, politics, international security, and humanitarian affairs. In addition, six academic lectures were held during the conference, covering sustainable development, international relations, digital ethics, public health, and further study counselling.
At both the opening and closing ceremonies, Prof. Jacky Ho, Dean of the FHES, delivered remarks in which he stated that Model United Nations Conference offer participants an opportunity to learn to seek common ground while respecting differences, thereby advancing human society. He expressed the hope that young people would seize this occasion to explore solutions to geopolitical tensions and crises of trust, and become advocates for peace and sustainability.
