The initiative aims to cultivate outstanding church docent-guides equipped with the professional knowledge, excellent credentials, and a genuine passion for guiding services.
To promote the conservation and continuity of Macao’s church history and architectural art, the Faculty of Religious Studies and Philosophy, in collaboration with the Executive Training and Lifelong Learning Office at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ), jointly launched the ‘Docent Training Programme: Macao Catholic Church Guided Tour’. The initiative aims to cultivate outstanding church docent-guides equipped with the professional knowledge, excellent credentials, and a genuine passion for guiding services.

The course specially featured Mrs Anna Leong-Lei, a founding member of the Catholic Pilgrimage Service of Macao, as the programme’s guest lecturer. Conducted entirely on-site at St Lawrence’s Church, the training provided participants with professional, standardised, church-themed docent training. The core curriculum focuses on cultural heritage and practical guiding skills, integrating church history, religious culture, and architectural art with guiding etiquette and practical application. By combining theoretical instruction with on-site practice and exercises, the course deepened the learning experience, effectively enhancing participants’ engagement with church histories while equipping them with practical tour-guiding capabilities.
The course was highly successful and received an enthusiastic response, earning widespread praise from the participants. Building on this success, USJ looks forward to offering similar courses in the future. These initiatives will remain dedicated to popularising Macao’s church history and culture, celebrating its World Heritage value, and promoting the positive transmission of faith culture, thereby actively supporting the sustainable development of local cultural preservation and humanities education.
