"BEYOND" | USJ 2026 Master Show of Architecture & Design Imagines the Future of Macao Through Speculative, Research-Driven Projects

The Department of Architecture and Design at USJ proudly presents BEYOND, the 2026 Master of Architecture & Design Graduation Show of Architecture & Design.

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) is proud to present BEYOND, the 2026 Master Show of Architecture & Design from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, showcasing the research and design projects of its postgraduate students.

BEYOND challenges conventional thinking by exploring the future possibilities of architecture and design, encouraging Macao’s next generation of creatives to push past boundaries, experiment with new methodologies, and rethink how design engages its context. Rather than dwelling on existing cultural narratives, the exhibition embraces speculative approaches, new technologies, and alternative design solutions that can shape the future of Macao’s built environment.

The show presents original work from the Faculty’s Master’s students, envisioning new directions for architecture, urban space, and material innovation. Each project addresses key challenges through creative problem-solving, combining social relevance, environmental responsibility, and cultural adaptation with a bold, forward-thinking approach.

More than a showcase, BEYOND is a catalyst for discussion and innovation. By bringing emerging designers together with a wider audience, it creates space for new perspectives, critical dialogue, and interdisciplinary exchange. BEYOND does not simply reflect Macao’s present; it dares to imagine its future, inspiring ideas that will shape the next era of architecture and design.

BEYOND INTERACTIONS
Exhibition of the Master of Design

Beyond Interactions begins with a question: what happens when designers stop asking “what is?” and start asking “what could be?” The exhibition presents the research and design projects of Year 1 students from the Master of Design (Specialisation in Interactive Design), whose work spans Interactive Multimedia Design, Interactive Product Design, Interactive Sound Design, Interactive Robotic Design, Visual Communication Design, and Interactive Virtual Environments – six areas united by a shared ambition to push interaction design into new territory.

Each project is a work in progress: a prototype, an experiment, a proposition. Together, they reflect a generation of designers who are not waiting for the future to arrive, but testing methodologies and technologies, challenging assumptions, and imagining solutions that are socially relevant, culturally aware, and built for the realities of Macao and the Greater Bay Area. More than a finished statement, Beyond Interactions is an open conversation between designers and their audience, and between the world as it is and the one we might design together.

Master of Architecture
A Selection of Practice-Based Dissertations

The Master of Architecture exhibition presents a selection of practice-based dissertations – the major research and design projects with which students conclude their studies. Each takes a specific site in Macao or the Greater Bay Area as its starting point, pairing close site characterisation and typological investigation with a contemporary architectural problem, then resolving it through a fully developed building design and its construction technology. Together, the works test new spatial answers to the conditions that define the region today – among them density, heritage, environmental pressure, and public life – proposing, in built form, how architecture might respond.
