The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) celebrated the Inauguration Ceremony of the 9th USJ Students’ Association (USJSA) on 23 Januray 2026, at the Don Bosco Auditorium of the USJ’s Ilha Verde Campus.

The inauguration ceremony commenced at 7:00 pm that evening. Attendees included Ms. Hung Wai Man, Head of the Students Affairs Division of the Education and Youth Development Bureau; Dr. Alejandro Salcedo, Acting Rector ofUSJ; Prof. Jenny Phillips, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law; Prof. João Brochado, Head of the Department of Media, Arts and Technology; Ms. Jenny Lam, Director of the Office of Student and Alumni Affairs; Ms. Lydia Tong, Vice-Chairperson of the Alumni Association; and staff members from various departments.

Dr Alejandro Salcedo, the acting rector of USJ, gave a heartfelt welcome speech. He first expressed his gratitude to the student association on our campus for their dedication and passion. Over the years, USJ has recognised the sincere efforts of both staff members and the USJSA in enhancing student life. Every endeavour, whether large or small, reflects USJ’s commitment to education and its ongoing care, making positive changes a reality. On behalf of all the teachers and students, Dr Salcedo extended heartfelt thanks to all the faculty and staff for their contributions of time and innovative ideas. He also reminded everyone “on this journey” that not every idea will be accepted, nor will every plan proceed smoothly. However, he emphasised that change is not failure, but an opportunity for learning and growth. As leaders, it is important to learn to gather wisdom from criticism and to seek opportunities amid setbacks. He encouraged students who feel lost along the way to remain sincere and adaptable and to go with the flow. He urged his fellow students to face challenges head-on, persevere with determination and work together to embark on a new journey.

Mr Richard Vallestero, the former President of the 8th USJSA General Assembly, then delivered his speech. He recalled that, two years ago, when he had assumed his role within the USJSA, he had been filled with nervousness and anxiety. His time at the USJSA had taught him that making mistakes and stumbling were part of the human condition, and that the most important thing was to have the courage to speak up and take that first step. During the meeting, he shared the following short and powerful quote by Alan Paton: “Courage is not the absence of fear, but the resolve to move forward despite it,” in order to encourage the incoming student association. He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Office for Student and Alumni Affairs for their guidance and support, which had enabled him to participate actively in various activities and foster connections among USJ students.

During the ceremony, Ms Sabrina Angelica Braga was invited on stage to receive the USJSA stamp, symbolising the handover of authority. She extended her sincere thanks and welcome to the distinguished guests in attendance. She stated that the mission of the student union comprises two key aspects. Firstly, the union is committed to acting as an active listening committee, gathering students’ ideas, concerns and aspirations through various channels, such as open forums and informal interactions. These valuable insights are then translated into improved services. Secondly, the union is dedicated to strengthening its internal core by focusing on team building and mindful leadership training. This will ensure that future activities are efficiently operated and embody a spirit of mutual support, resilience and unity. She emphasised that only by establishing a solid internal foundation can profound external influence be achieved. The newly elected leadership of the student union will, as always, remain true to its original aspirations and strive to provide better service and support for all students.

Miss Ashley Panagsagan, vice-chairperson of the 9th USJSA General Assembly, introduced the USJSA team members to the audience. She stated that the student association is united by the shared vision of enhancing students’ sense of belonging and making the campus a more welcoming and connected place. She said that the committee members would continue to leverage their respective strengths by organising events and attentively listening to students’ voices, turning their ideas into tangible actions and driving change. She expressed her gratitude to all the students and to the OSAA for their trust and support, which has given the student association the opportunity to serve everyone. Over the next two years, the association will strive to create a supportive, inclusive and unforgettable campus experience.
