About the Talk:

In ‘Fonte do Lilau: A Dive into Poetry in Portuguese and Dóci Papiaçam di Macau’, the complex definition of ‘Macau literature’ is addressed, referring to some of the various academic and cultural perspectives on the subject. It explores the duality between ‘Macanese literature’ – written by the children of the land, in Portuguese or the local Creole – and ‘Macau literature’, produced by resident authors and visiting authors. It traces a historical path from Camões to Bocage and contemporary poets such as Carolina de Jesus and José dos Santos Ferreira “Adé”. It also highlights the hybrid and multicultural nature of literary production, reflecting the encounter between East and West, and emphasises the role of patoá as a mark of identity.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Jorge Arrimar, born in Angola, has a distinguished academic background, having completed his Ph.D. in Modern History (2007) in Portugal and a second Ph.D. in Document Sciences at the University of Alcalá in Madrid, Spain (2013). He served as the director of the National/Central Library of Macau from 1985 to 1998 and has authored several poetry books inspired by Macau, including Fonte do Lilau (1990) and Secretos Sinais (1992).
