Two first-year students from the University of Saint Joseph’s (USJ) Department of Social Work, Man Ioi Tek Dicky and Lai Kin Kei Kay, were invited by the Education and Youth Development Bureau to attend the first plenary meeting of the Committee for Women and Children’s Affairs for 2025 held on 26 March. This meeting focused on promoting the welfare of women and children and discussing the progress of related policies.

The meeting was chaired by Acting Chairperson Dr. Hon Wai. During the session, heads of various working groups and government representatives provided comprehensive reports on the latest developments concerning women’s and children’s affairs. These reports covered interdepartmental collaboration on the Macao Women’s Development Goals and the government’s measures for protecting women and children. The Acting Chairperson also encouraged young people to “tell the Macao story well”, inspiring them to actively engage in social matters.

Following the meeting, Dicky raised an important question regarding the welfare of women in Macao suffering from psychological abuse and received a thoughtful response from the Acting Chairperson. Kay remarked that the meeting was a “rare and highly beneficial opportunity” and that “it shows that the thoughts and feelings of young people are valued by the Macao government”.

The Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Jacky Ho expressed that such experiences are not only beneficial for students’ professional development but also expands their curiosity and pursuit in understanding and concern for societal issues. The Department of Social Work of the Faculty of Health Sciences of USJ extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Macao SAR government for empowering students to engage in public affairs, and it also hopes that students apply their classroom knowledge in real-world settings, stepping beyond the confines of the classroom and contributing to the community and the greater good.
