How to make a referral?
There are times when people show trust and come to us with a full load of unpleasant emotions (e.g., sadness, worry, frustration…), but we might not be sure of how to handle and it could be difficult to know what to say. The following are some helpful tips:
- Warm and supportive attitude in listening to his/her concerns in private
- Calm, direct and friendly tone to express your concern about his/her welfare
- Respect his/her thoughts and feelings
- Show empathy to his/her doubt and worry of seeking counselling service
- Offer to accompany him/her to meet the counsellor if needed
- Take time to accompany him/her; engage in activities that are relaxing
