Since August 2022 Tereza Sena 冼丽莎 is an Affiliated Researcher at Xavier Research Centre for Memory and Identity (XRCMI), Faculty of Humanities, University of Saint Joseph, Macao SAR, China (USJ), where she served as Adjunct Senior Research Fellow during the previous year of 2021.
She is also a retired researcher at Centre of Sino-Western Cultural Studies (CECSO), Macao Polytechnic University, where she was Invited Research Assistant from 2009 to early 2021.
Formerly she was a Research Fellow at the Macau Ricci Institute and Chinese Cross Currents 神州交流´s contributing editor (2003-2009); Acting Director of the Research Unit, Centro Científico e Cultural de Macau, Lisbon (2001–2003) — institution to where she returned from 2022 to February 2023 —, and Head of Studies, Research and Publications Division, Cultural Institute of Macau (1990-1997), among others.
Her thesis A Casa de Oeiras e Pombal. Estado, Senhorio e Património, concluded in 1987 (Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa) won (1st place ex-aequo) the “Prémio Fundação Marquês de Pombal 1994”. In 2015 and 2018 she was also distinguished with two “Honorable Mention, Papers” in the 4th and 5th Outstanding Achievement Awards (2015–2017) and (2012–2014) for Macao Research in Humanities and Social Sciences, organized by the Macao Foundation with the Social Sciences in China Press and the GuangDong Social Sciences Association, P. R. of China.
Devoted to the study of Macau´s history and historiography since 1988, she develops international academic activity on Macau Studies and published around 70 titles related to Macau´s culture and literature; history of translation and press; political autonomy; intermediary role in international trade of South China (18th-19th centuries); foreigner residence; Macau’s Cemeteries; Macau-Siam’s relations; missionary activity in China, Siam and continental Southeast Asia.
Her most recent book Tomás Pereira e o Imperador Kangxi. Um diálogo entre a China e o Ocidente (Lisboa: Guerra & Paz, 2022) was selected to integrate the Portuguese National Reading Plan and was mainly written during the year of 2021 when serving as Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the XRCMI.
